      Cesar Weizegger I know right? It goes beyond that thou. Paying for that lap dance is sraight up bad thing to do. You will lose moral points for doing that. Same goes for watching that striptease. You know what also net you moral points loss? Killing guy that surrenders to you....not unlike what those nazis did.

  • @Skillet98
    @Skillet98 9 років тому +560

    To be honest, I'm surprised there isn't MORE sex in Metro as a whole.
    Think about it. Humanity is on the brink of extinction, the outside world is uninhabitable, everyone is crammed together down in the tunnels like sardines...
    Most forms of entertainment would probably be gone completely. Sure, you could play a board game if you used some rocks and a piece of charcoal to draw the board... or if a guitar survived (as seen in some of the tunnels), and someone knew how to play. But for the most part... that life would be boring and depressing as hell.
    Sex it up, people.

    • @erttheking
      @erttheking 9 років тому +21

      You really want to try and deliver and have a kid in a dirty metro system?
      That and how unpleasant everything is would probably be a turn off.

    • @Skillet98
      @Skillet98 9 років тому +74

      erttheking Well, there are children in the Metro... so obviously, people still get in the mood to bang. Unless you want to go with the theory that they're all rape babies or something.
      Also, people not bathing and generally being gross and disgusting didn't stop humans from breeding like rabbits for the thousands of years we existed without bathing and perfume...

    • @erttheking
      @erttheking 9 років тому +16

      Yeah, but I kind of notice that there are a lot less kids than parents. It looks like the majority of people in the Metro decide not to have kids. Probably because the economic burden that comes with feeding them would be too much. Among other things.

    Considering prostitution (and really the commoditization of sex) is one of the oldest industries in human civilization, I don't think sexualisation of women after humans are returned to their baser natures is remotely out of place, infact it would be out of place if they weren't.

      Same with stalker, but instead of turning on subtitles, go and learn russian. The english translation sucks ass.

    • @TXFDA
      @TXFDA 9 років тому +7

      ***** Yeah, and have to look away from the game every 5 seconds to read English subtitles. Makes sense. That's about as bad as GTA-style games and their minimaps. Your eyes tend to be glued to where the action ISN'T, in order to know where to go.
      Now I'm sure if you can understand Russian, it'd be great. Otherwise I feel like it'd make the game worse to non-Russian speakers. You either stare at the bottom of the screen to read subtitles, or have no idea what anyone's saying.

    • @BrKeNCyDe1
      @BrKeNCyDe1 9 років тому +23

      TXF I honestly feel like if you can't pay attention to at least 2 things on the screen, something must be wrong with you. I know this is insulting, but it's my honest truth. Having to look at a map or read subtitles while playing the game or looking at the game shouldn't be a problem.

  • @gskaloyan
    @gskaloyan 10 років тому +53

    I'm a bit lost on Joe's description of the strip club sequence and lap dance. I mean you're following after a bunch of Red soldiers trying to track down one in particular. They go into the club so naturally you follow and eavesdrop on what they're saying, but as you are some woman comes up behind you treating you as though you're a customer. Artyom grabs her, muffles her and pushes her to an adjacent room so his presence isn't found out by the enemy soldiers he's tracking. Then when they leave and Artyom takes his hand off her mouth she plays it as though he's a kinky guy and gives him a rate.
    You aren't supposed to stick around and pay for a lap dance, in fact I didn't even know you COULD because as soon as I was able I got out of the room and back on the Red's trail.
    I'm a bit mystified that you'd say the dance was shoved in. You ARE in a strip club and there is a stripper offering a dance and you can pay to get one if you want. I mean, if you pay for the lap dance what are you expecting?
    If anything it kinda reflects on the kind of person you personally are or how seriously you're taking the game and its story. I immerse myself and treat the game as though I really am there and if I'm tracking an enemy I'm not going to just let them go on and let the trail get cold because 'oh look boobies!'.
    Like I said I didn't even that getting a lap dance was even possible.

    First off, I don't understand the sexualisation complaint. The lap dance is entirely optional, and makes sense given the context (You're in a strip club, what else was supposed to happen). As for the Anna part, I think it makes more sense when you consider there is implied dialogue between levels (Hence how characters like the fisherman learn your name, despite you never watching any dialogue).
    However I agree with the rest of this review, and I too would give the game a 9/10. The only subtractors are the few glitches that remain (I'm writing this after finishing the game in 2015) and the travesty of the paid Ranger mode.
    I personally can't wait for the next Metro game (If there is one), and I hope that they try an open world setting. The level design is just too good for words in Last Light, it's honestly disappointing that I'll only ever get to see each part once each playthrough.

    this game is exelently immersing. walking through a dark tunnel, guided by your lighter because your flashlight shorted out, strapped for ammo due to the some of creatures prior, no aiming reticle , just a laser sight on your Helsing... that's when you feel the quiet. the silence of the room around you. the slight cold in the room grows more noticable. It makes you legitimately nervous, leading up to the releif of your flashlight kicking back on. That moment, deep in the catacombs, made me realize just how great this game really was. never a dull moment. but, that one stretch of tunnel... nothing like it.

      He just said that it was out of place and kind of immature. It seemed a lot like fan service for a younger crowd. It can be a lot easier for people to grasp killing other people in a survival atmosphere then adding in a prostitution scene. Not saying it's not possible, but could've been handled better.

    • @tibarion
      @tibarion 8 років тому +17

      "Immature" It's a video game not a book or serious movie. They put in what the fans want and what they think would be fun. If people like strippers and it fits the lore (which it definitely does) then there's nothing wrong with adding them in. For a post-apocalyptic world where people live in the subway system, it was handled well enough and fans enjoyed it. But to each their own, you can't like everything in a game

    • @MichaelMcCallister097
      @MichaelMcCallister097 8 років тому +6

      +tibarion yea I agree. It can fit, but it doesn't matter that it's just a video game as it's such a large industry that it is necessary to treat your product like an adult. And many video games these days are practically interactive movies anyways so that argument is pretty unfair.

    The reason why Anna changes her personality towards you, is because in he beginning segments of the game she leaves you to die. She saves herself instead of helping you so she can go back and tell the Rangers what happened to the mission you guys were on, and more importantly, what happened to you. She felt guilty and in return she gave you some guilt sex. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

    I think Joe completely misunderstood the point of the lap dance, or at least this is what I took from it. It is there for the same reason as the theatre performance, to show that even through all of this humanity is still clinging to what keeps them human. The stuff with Ana felt weird though.

      Not to mention, it's all optional.. you don't need to see the lapdance if you don't want to.. + Joe complains that there's not reason for the whole stripclub scene, when in fact it has meaning in the story.. + Anna hates Artyom at the start of the game because she thinks that he is responsible for the death of Hunter (that happened in Metro 2033) who was her idol.. and the sex scene between them two? Two young people who respect each other, he saved her, she saved him, they think they are both infected and have only a couple of hours - maybe days at best ahead of them, etc. yeah, I guess sex at that time isn't a bad thing to do as one of the last things you can do in your last moments on this world :)

    This is a SERIOUSLY untapped market. I mean what games do we have that feature nuclear wastelands. S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Fallout and Metro. That's... basically it. Stalker looks quite dated (but don't get me wrong it's still one hell of a game, playing through Call of Pripyat now with a few mods and it's great), Can't really comment on Fallout but from what I've seen it doesn't look quite as wasteland-ey as the others and is less 'hardcore' as well as having pretty poor shooting mechanics, and Metro is excellent in terms of story, gameplay and world but it's quite a linear game. So if someone was to make a game that: is based in Chernobyl, has beautiful graphics, and has good shooting mechanics, YOU. WOULD. BE. GOLDEN!
    Why the fok has no one done this yet?! I mean we have a lot of fantasy type open world games, modern day open world games, but nuclear wasteland open world games? They're basically non-existent. If the right developer came along and produced a high quality game as I described they would be in a freaking gold mine. Either 4A Games or GSC Game World would be amazing for this. They absolutely nailed the atmosphere and the immersion.
    4A would have to do it as an entirely different game though. One of the best things about Metro is the fact that since the world isn't huge they can cram it full of details and little hidden things.
    Thoughts? Would anyone be interested in seeing more games like this?

    He forgets it was D6 not D9.
    Forgets that the factions are literally the ones from WWII. Apparently, from what i can tell the nuclear war started because none of the WWII factions collapsed and WWIII broke out causing the apocalypse. Anyway the factions are literally there because they all are different groups of people with different ideologies. At least the higher-ups think so, not all the civilians.
    Forgets that Anna felt ashamed and dropped the attitude for leaving Artyom to be captured by the Nazis and seeing that he is capable, she grew respectful of him.
    Forgets that the stripclub scene HAD a reason. It was a fucking Bordel in which the Red Army soldiers were residing in which you were chasing to get information from Pavel.
    Also forgot that there are other female although civilian characters that don't serve the story at all or just add a short story for you to overhear and are not sexualized. Well not all of them at least if you count out the 2 women you can overhear as they are taking a bath through a blurry window.
    About why the Story is hidden: The story is hidden to make you prove that you can expierence it all by looking around. You can't cram everything on a linear path. You have to force the player to prove their interest because otherwise the delivery will feel as if the story is forced upon you and not everyone likes to read long text and watch 10+ minutes of theater for an achievement or whatever. It also makes you look around the areas you are meant to explore and scavenge from.

You can even ingnore the private dance offer if you want. So I don't see how it's "forced on you". One of the best games ever, BTW (if this would be 10/10. I would have to give 2033 ~4/10, in fact, the only good thing about Metro2033 was that it led to Metro LL, like FarCry2 led to FarCry3 even though FC2 was complete garbage).

    To be fair with the Anna thing, I can see what 4A games were going for. When Anna first meets Artyom she doesn't trust him. He's a no name jerk from a no name station who Hunter put his faith in for unknown reasons. (I've been playing through 2033 myself and I'm still not entirely sure why he trusts Artyom so much). So she thinks he doesn't really deserve to be there. But then during their mission she loses him and feels really bad about it. And THEN he comes back, fights a giant prawn with her, and she realizes "Hey, you've been through some awful shit and you're actually pretty badass. I was wrong about you!". So her personality change doesn't exactly come out of nowhere.
    The PROBLEM though, is that she hasn't really gotten enough development for this change to feel natural. You literally only spend fifteen minutes with her before separating and doing your own thing for several hours. If you spent a few more missions with her then maybe this arc would have felt more complete and natural. I don't dislike it as much as Joe, but I definitely agree that it could have been done better.

      Hunter trust hum so much because in VNDK artyoms home station hunter feels like every one else is going crazy with fear from the dark ones including artyoms step father uncle sasha who was very good friends with hunter. I havent played 2033 but i reaf the books and thats what they say.

    I agree that Anna was forced in the sort of 'love interest' department, but at the same time, people tend to skip the part between those moments. I also disagree that you should start with Last Light; as much as I agree that it's a vast improvement than 2033, you can't really appreciate those upgrades.
    It's also a game version of a book in the series that hasn't even been released yet, so it doesn't surprise me that Anna is a little under-developed. Hopefully she's more of a character in the book.

    • @WTFSexyHeadphones
      @WTFSexyHeadphones 10 років тому

      ess wasim I think that is because STALKER allows you to free roam. I played STALKER first then went to Metro and at first I didn't like it because you are lead around everywhere most of the game and can't really go running around much. It is easier to get into the atmosphere of STALKER and more engrossed in it when you have all that freedom to explore the world and truly live it.

      So not a PERFECT recreation, but it's damn good stuff

    if you are interested in metro , I advise you to play the trilogy - S. T. A. L. K. E. R. is a game from the same developers who made metro and it has cult status in Russia , there is still a game survarium - is she also from the same developers , and is also good , but its been 4 years can not finish , there are flaws , but the game itself is good ! + all of these games are made on the novel roadside picnic from the Brothers Strugatsky , I advise you to read this classic of Russian fiction !

    love your reviews but you need to play the first game to fully understand anna. Your character used to work with anna's father and she blames you for his death which is why she gives you the cold shoulder. Later in the game after you get captured she feels bad for letting it happen and feels she is responsible for what you had to go through. Finally after you risk your life to go out of your way to save her and nearly die in the process she truly sees you are a good person and falls for you because in a hostile world you actually make her safe.

    Why would you want to skip 2033? I've never played either one, 2033 and Last Light are free on 360 next month so I'm checking out reviews. From what I've seen and heard, 2033 is still a good game, or at least worth playing for the atmosphere and stuff. Even if Last Light is better in almost every way, it would be worth playing 2033 first just so you know what's going on.
    (And I'm not talking about the Redux version or whatever.)
    I never understood why someone would purposely skip an earlier game in the series(assuming the story is consistent), just because it's a bit better. Of course, that's also assuming the previous game didn't suck, which in the case of Metro, doesn't seem to be the case. That'd be like skipping Borderlands 1 because Borderlands 2 did some things better, despite BL1 being fucking awesome still.
    Also.... "How did all the factions end up in the same city?" Well..from my understanding having not played the game. They've all been there a while. Obviously the groups were formed while underground. As another comment said... Put a large group of people in a small area for long enough, and they'll form groups and find reasons to hate the others. Obviously some of them could have started above ground. Someone from a group happened to be underground when things happened or whatever, and they started it. Either way.
    ALSO from what I understand, you can skip the lapdance by walking away. But to be fair to the existence of it, and the entire stripclub-like area..it wouldn't exactly be surprising to find a place like it if something like this was real. Honestly, I'm surprised sex and nudity isn't more common in other post-apocalyptic games like the recent Fallouts. Sex and Nudity is a big deal to a lot of people, and people would pay good money for it. I mean hell, strippers and prostitutes exist in current modern day society...would it really be that surprising to find it in a place like Metro? It's a society of people that's managed to form cities, factions, currency, guards, leaders, etc. Of course someone was gonna take the chance to make money off of sex. Not to mention it'd be one of the few forms of entertainment left. Not like they can just turn on the TV, or play games. Hell, they probably wouldn't even have access to many books, so they couldn't even read a book.
    And you mentioned not having legs when looking down. Why the fuck is it so hard for game companies to add legs to FPS games? Some games do it, so it's obviously something that can be done. Why would you NOT add it? Do they just think people are never going to look down? As for the whole "Mute Protagonist" thing...I like it sometimes. It has to work like Half-Life 2 though, where the entire game, 'cutscenes' and all, takes place from your perspective, and still allows camera movement and stuff. It makes it feel like, despite being mute, that you're still an actual person there, and not just some cutout main character like most FPS games. Or I like how Fallout 3 and NV did it by not giving your character a voice, but still giving you dialogue options, allowing you to actually make choices and have quest-changing decisions in a conversation. Which also gives you a sense of being your own character and allowing you to get into it, but still giving you the ability to talk.
    You mentioned that a lot of the story and lore is hidden. Well..that seems more realistic to me. You know what's not realistic? Random NPCs you just met giving you a 20 minute long talk about the history and backstory of your location, the people, and the enemies. And every NPC you meet shoving exposition into your face. You want to know the lore and extra story bits? Look around. Find the information yourself like you would actually have to do in a situation like this. It makes it more realistic, and also makes the main game less exposition-heavy. Not to mention it gives people that like to explore, extra incentive to do so, especially if you want to know everything you can. Besides, it's not like they put anything overly important in the hidden things. It's not like the really important objective and location of the next mission is in a note behind a locker. It'd all be optional information that people might find interesting to read.

      I didn't know that they were releasing last light as well, I got 2033 last night having zero experience with the series and I love it. I'm the type of guy that likes to take in all the details of whatever I'm playing and the atmosphere is incredible (wearing surround sound headphones adds to the creepy factor as well) I'm only about an hour into the game so I haven't experienced much but so far I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good post apocalyptic shooter

      JediJackalope Actually there is a list that you can look up that will show you the moral point system. But the best way to get the good ending is to do these things. Explore and look around as much as possible, listen to people's conversations unless you're told to leave while listening to them, don't kill those surrendering to you, and don't kill mutants unless they are showing you aggression. There are a couple levels where you get a moral point if you go through the entire level without killing anyone also.

    Helpful Hint: Don't swap your filter when the little "beep beep beep" notification comes up. Because at that point you still have a whole minute left on that filter, and if you swap it then, you're just wasting filters. Stay with that filter for a while, and you'll hear Artyom start coughing and gasping when you really do need to change it. Because let's say you do 4 filter changes in a level. if you change all of those when the notification tells you to, then you've wasted 4 whole minutes of filter time. And filters can be sometimes annoying to find, especially on Harcore or Ranger modes. On Normal, they can still be somewhat scarce if you don't explore enough.
