Crappy universal motor, but I guess making a product that has actual copper in the motor and enough windings to work on 230V is a lot more expensive, over a universal motor with a 5 hour design life. Likely CCA wire, and no worry about brush life, they likely will outlive the motor anyway. Probably fine as a cheap "does the odd kitchen knife" grinder, but not really designed for a long life.
Mine has just failed. Not really used it for much. I'll be looking for a much better quality replacement from another brand.

Agreed, but for my rare and light use it is just the job.
