To be honest, I've always been interested in Greek mythology. I honestly think Athena is a horrid person for doing this to Medusa. Medusa did not choose to get raped; she had no right casting that curse upon Medusa because she got pregnant when she didn't choose to. She honestly could've punished Poseidon, if that's her enemy she could've done that to him. But then still out of Athenas cold heart she would still curse Medusa even though she explained.

Even in this version, she couldn't actually punish Poseidon. The gods were constantly treading a thin line between rivalry and war, a war which wouldn't have been any good for everyone involved (except maybe Ares). But she could dish out punishment on the Priestess who broke her vows in her temple, even if unwillingly.
I actually prefer the version of this story where it's not really a punishment, but a gift meant to prevent Medusa from being assaulted again.

Medusa's headful of snakes and petrifying eyes, represent traumatized woman's agony. After being raped, no woman can remain kind and forgiving to others. Perhaps its a visual representation of a scorned woman. Maybe Athena "cursed" her. Or maybe she gave her a terrifying weapon to protect herself with. Her head ended up on the shield of Athena for a reason. Medusa is a fantastic character... she isn't a monster, she just wanted to be left alone.

I've always felt sympathy towards every Medusa adaptation/character in any film or show that she's in. Knowing her background story. Alot of films portray her as simply evil and they never really delve into her story. I would love to see a film based solely on her. Something that takes itself as serious as what happened to her. I'd even love to see creative liscenese make a twist from the original story, with a happier ending for her.

Rape is based on power, control, anger & hatred. I’ve always liked Medusa. She was a victim and another woman was part of her pain and betrayal. This fact alone hurt the most, I’m guessing.

FYI he rewrote the Arachne myth too. He's the only person who writes the story of Medusa as a victim and as I said, he's not even Greek. He's Roman. He was well aware that she was a gorgon but that didn't faze him in the slightest. He couldn't touch her, he couldnt look directly at her, but he didn't mind one bit.
" Hearing your voice is enough "
He even discovered that there was a way to reverse her curse, but to do that, Medusa would have to turn him to stone. Hercules was completely at peace with this and was willing to sacrifice himself for her sake. This was by far the most wholesome and heroic version of Hercules I had ever seen. You would think that Hercules would be the LAST person to fall in love with a monster considering his history. I liked that show because it painted Medusa as a lonely soul instead of a villian, bitter from betrayal but a genuinely good person at heart. that show was decades ahead of its time.

The problem with Medusa is that she was written by Ovid a Roman poet which may interpret Medusa another way to make her story more appealing and intriguing. Greek mythology doesn’t have a strict canon, so when Roman conquered Greek they incorporated some of their religion into Greek religion. It also has to do with the fact that the Romans favored Ares while the Greeks favored Athena so Ovid's version of the Medusa story was to make Athena look bad. In Greek myth, she's actually one of the most fair and just of the gods. I mean, Artemis killed a poor hunter just because he accidentally saw her naked while Athena made another guy who saw her naked blind but gave him the gift of prophecy or something like that to make up for it.

@@mjcsandboxgames4021 well even that works with this interpretation. If based on this interpretation, Athena chose to bore this power back to Medusa so that she could stay protected yet herself be powerless against the mighty Olympian god Poseidon because Nepotism would always save him from receiving any harsh punishment then she would do that to make the playing field level. Just so that no man can touch Medusa again without facing the consequences.
But, how I see it, when one doesn't get closure and justice for a long time, that grief and pain manifests itself into something so ugly (almost like a black hole) within the soul. Medusa slowly transforming herself to a monster or lashing out relentlessly while internally screeching for help, would only want the gods to rid her of this existence. Athena being the god Medusa worshipped and prayed with all her soul, would be able to see that change in her.
If Athena wanted to get rid of Medusa in the 1st place, then she would never have needed to give her all this power. So even equipping Perseus with shield to ward off the gaze, the indication was only her gaze was to be defeated as that made her a monster she never was.
In short. Poseidon was supposed to be punished but nepotism and god of the sea >>>>> Athena ---> Power given to Medusa under the disguise of punishment.
time passed and no closure + injustice from olympians on being violated ---> Medusa developed a crushed soul and was transforming into the monster (lashing out when not needed or refusing to seek help externally) ----> Athena wanted to end her misery so created a shiny shield (or made her shield shiny) to ward off the gaze.
Athena gave the shield to Perseus and rest is how it played out.

      First, read what alexandra said.
Second, don't think too hard about it. This version you've seen is the rewritten version made by Ovid, who wanted to paint all figures of Authority as pricks. So if you want the most realistic version of what Ovid was trying to say, it's as follows. "Athena is a bitch who cursed a Hot woman, because of Jealousy. Poseidon is a fucked up Rapist, and gets off on ruining peoples lives.". Not very romantic in the end is it? That's why instead of thinking about the mistranslations, you should only think about the original story, after all the originals were based on religion, whilst the retold versions are based on politics.

You do know that the myth with Medusa being cursed was written by a guy who loved to rewrite myths where gods screw over mortals since he hated people with power like making Athena petty and turn a woman into a spider when she’s one of the chillest of the goddesses Medusa was always a monster it’s more like this version was more propaganda then based on any previous writings passed down

Really? Never heard of this story, I was taught that this a beautiful, lady of power and respect, who lived on an Caribbean with her family and people. Her hair ( as most people who lived there ) was worn in the natural loc style. When a ship of Greeks sailing the waters came across her, having never seen such beauty, was both shocked and amazed ! Part of their description of her was that “she had hair of snakes”. From this maybe the story of “Medusa” developed. Sometimes when people don’t understand or come across something very different the fill in the blanks with what they assume...... just a thought, I wasn’t there.

This isn't Greek mythology, it's roman literature.
In the Greek myth Medusa was a natural born gorgon, along with her two sisters; stheno and Euryale, and she actively preyed on young women and virgins.
The iteration where she's assaulted and turned into a gorgon by Athena is a more recent adaption written by a Roman poet, Ovid, in his metamorphosis. He wrote this intentionally to be controversial as anti-greek propaganda because he wanted to portray their gods in as bad a light as possible (particularly Athena, as he was kicked out of Athens). That's not to say that the Greek gods are good, they definitely aren't, but Medusa isn't a victim of anything, she was never assaulted and she was never a beautiful priestess who was punished for being assaulted.
I'm not saying it's not okay for people to discuss this version or anything (not that I could stop anyone from doing so), but please label it as what it is; Roman literature. Not Greek mythology.

I always felt that Athena loved Medusa, so after Medusa was assaulted, Athena gifted her/saved her with the power to turn men to stone and any man that sees her will no longer be interested. I also find it fitting that Medusas head is used is many instances to ward away evil. Some even say buildings with Medusa on them were safe havens for women escaping violent husbands. This version makes more sense to me... but men get real pressed when I share it haha

Here's the Medusa story I read: Medusa was very loyal to Athena and was thankful to the goddess for always protecting Athens city.
Medusa being the head priestess of Athena's shrine wanted to bring more people to come and worship and prey as appreciation to the goddess.
Medusa idolized Athena so much that she vowed to be a pure virgin like the goddess Athena and to never lose her faith to her, however...
Medusa was naive thinking that the men who came to visit Athena's shrine was to show their thanks to the goddess, but the men were just there to stare at Medusa beauty.
Medusa was often showing more skin then the other priestesses of Athena thinking that she had the goddess protection at all times.
A rumor started to spread about Medusa beauty more men came to Athena's shine to look at Medusa. The men started to say that Medusa was more beautiful than Athena.
Athena hearing what the men were saying and the romurs about Medusa, Athena started to observe Medusa closely.
Athena after watching Medusa for many days started to wonder if Medusa was only using her shrine to get attention.
Medusa shamefully floating her looks in front of pervy men annoyed the prideful virgin goddess, but Athena was not hateful nor resentful of Medusa seeing has she still was faithful to Athena by keeping her chastity.
Athena and Poseidon were having an argument about who's gift was more worthy for the people of Athens city, the fisher men voted for Poseidon's gift and the maidens who live on land voted for Athena's gift which became a tie, so they asked Zeus for the final vote.
Zeus voted for Athena's gift over his own brother, Athena was Zeus's is favourite child after all.
This made Poseidon very anger wanting to get back at Athena some how, noticing Athena's sudden fascination with her head priestess Medusa this gave Poseidon an disgusting idea to get revenge on Athena.
Poseidon tried to seduce Medusa which made her flattered Medusa still wanting to be pure for Athena turned Poseidon offer down.
Poseidon after looking at Medusa body closer became mad with lust trying to grab Medusa she ran away from him and went to Athena's shrine yelling for the goddess to come and save her.
Medusa holding the goddess's statue preyed and begged for Athena to help her. But it was to late Poseidon forced himself on Medusa and impregnated her.
Athena emerged from her statue with hatred and rage having her head priestess and shrine defiled by one of her rivals was a very huge insult to the virgin goddess, Medusa crying at the Athena's feet while still asking her for help.
Athena said to Medusa, because of your carelessness and inappropriate behavior you have brought this upon yourself!
Medusa begging Athena forgiveness asking for her protection. Athena cast a spell on Medusa so that any men who look at her will turn into stone and to think of it has both a blessing and a curse.
Medusa hair transformed into snakes her eyes became yellow and demonic her lower body turned into that of a serpent.
Any men or beast that would attacked Medusa would turn into stone when she looked at them.
Medusa lonely and depressed went to try to get her last bit of humanity left by creating a small shrine for Athena.
Medusa preying for Athena to put her out of her lonely misery. Athena starting to feel pity for Medusa knowing she could not undo her spell asked Perseus to cut her head so that she could rest in peace.
Athena gave Perseus a mirror and told him to have Medusa look at it but don't look at Medusa or you'll turn to stone.
After Perseus cuts Medusa head off Pegasus was born from her body. Perseus gave Medusa head to Athena, Athena put Medusa head on her shield immortalizing her for eternity.
Medusa will forever be by Athena's side as her favorite priestess and strongest weapon.
The reason why Athena never took revenge on Poseidon was because it would start a war among gods, which it's something even Zeus avoids.
