MSG is no more unhealthy than salt. It's not great, but it's also not dangerous in normal amounts. Msg will literally make any food taste better, it's like salt 2.
Yep. I agree, growing up poor, we use MSG to make our food taste better. I'm just curious if its what started its mass production though. Is it poverty? I know its possible especially because its widely used in Asia.
Nigel Ng aka Uncle Roger is a stand-up comedian based in the UK. He’s Malaysian. You may want to check his other videos. Here in the Philippines 🇵🇭, we wash our rice 3-4 times until the starch is gone or the water becomes clear. Then, we cook it.
Msg is healthy and fine, as long as u use it in moderation and understand how much needed to use it, so unless u have certain allergies, msg is perfectly fine
@@rev.paull.vasquez4001 ... It was especially after Uncle Roger told the lady “YOU F**KED UP!!” where she cracked up & barely held it together after that .... BUT WHO CAN BLAME HER??? 😂😂😂
I was married to a Korean woman for 13 years. When we first started to date I did the "Uncle Ben's" packet rice one day when I was making her dinner for the first time. She looked at me like I had an extra arm growing out of my forehead. She had never seen that before. Fast forward years later either using a rice cooker, or on the stove she would always ask me to make the rice. I always washed it more than she would and use the appropriate amount of water. Never drained rice in my life. That's just wrong.
Oddly in the UK (where I'm from) if you buy a packet of rice from a supermarket and look at the instructions on the back of the packet she did what we're told to do for years my family cooked rice this way. thankfully now we have a rice cooker.
What I have learned most people wash rice to get rid of starch before cooking but there are places they dont. There are also who do strain rice to wash it but not to drain water from it. Most of us use leftover rice in cooking fried rice. But according to Hersha, she follow the recipe that was given to her by BBC. She is a sweet lady when she & Uncle Roger met.
everyone wash the rice before cooking it...doesnt matter where you come from, but people from middle east and north african countries actually drain the rice before eating it and mixing it with some sort of stew or some sauce, yes it destroy some of the nutrients but its just like that here and it taste pretty good to.
5:14 stove top rice can work. But if your rice looks like this it is undercooked and disgusting. After the saucepan method I had used for year I inherited a rice cooker. So much better.

Probably fake. A lot of cooking shows have the dish pre-prepared at different levels of done-ness so that they can give you the recipe without making you wait on boiling water and whatnot. Chances are the rice she used in the recipe came out of an actual rice cooker off screen and the soggy mushy half cooked rice she made went into the trash. If you tried to copy that recipe, it would not turn out the same.
I always use jasmine rice for fried rice. 1 cup of rice to 1½ cup of water. Bring to a boil and then cover/simmer for 15 minutes. Perfect jasmine rice every time. Rice is always washed before cooking. There is no point after.
Plus remember the finger trick of measuring water cause usually I put my pointy finger to the bowl of the rice cooker while the rice in it and see if the water reached my finger's outer line as it is quite an accurate technique that is used.
The whole "MSG is unhealthy" has been started as a joke in a medical journal in the reader letters section decades ago... back then it was originally called the "chinese restaurant syndrom"
Redrain and washing your rice that is almost cook is actually reducing the nutrition. If you want to reduce starch, you wash the rice with good amount of water 3 to 4 times. And always measure your rice with finger
If you’d like to see Uncle Roger “take it up a notch or 2”, check out his reactions to Gordon Ramsay & Jamie Oliver.... They are HYSTERICAL 😂😂😂 He “tears them to pieces” in hilarious fashion 😂😂😂. Best of luck to the both of you for your move & best wishes always from 🇦🇺Australia🇦🇺 ✌️😎
Personally, I don't like peas in my stir fried rice. My wife is Filipina, and cooks a great stir fried rice (learned thru experience), but I asked her, years ago, NOT to add peas. And we only use Thai Jasmine rice. Of course, some other rice is ok, but I like Thai Jasmine very much (When military/retired/I was in Thailand numerous times). LOVE their food, and the spicy version! No respectable Asian is going to use a colander, nor will they run cold water over the rice! It's ugly to even see!

In your daily ingredient people consume MSG (monosodium glutamate) because it is part of it, not really unhealthy, only if its too much like everything you eat that is too much is bad for you.
MSG is not unhealthy if used correctly. putting a ton of msg in your food would make it salty, but using in moderation is not detrimental to your health.
He is a Comedian but he does research on food on different countries so it work out the right way not like Jamie Oliver , he didn’t do any research in different culture that the dish he cooked in and eaten out nasty Oh yucky it taste bad
MSG is NOT unhealthy. You can never talk about toxicity without talking about the amount you take in a time unit. Asian people eat MSG almost everyday and we don't have a shorter average life span because of that. If you take a whole package of MSG each day of course it is harmful. But will you do that?
Is he a cook? Not professionally. Just a home cook. Mostly a comedian who is ticked at people messing up Asian culture in an age where you can see how stuff is really made by looking it up here on UA-cam, so Nigel Ng created this character to make that point.
I like to measure rice & water more accurately than with just a finger, but I just don't get that recipe she used... if she takes the effort to measure the water, then why did she end up with excess water after cooking? That means she must have deliberately measured out *too much* water... in that case the finger method is objectively better...
