Together we dive head first into the world of teaching health and fitness in schools, and let's just say things are about to get awkwardly sweaty. From dodging flying dodgeballs to trying to convince middle schoolers that deodorant is NOT optional, collectively, we have seen it all.
We also share our experience and tips for navigating the trickier aspects of the subject matter. We're talking puberty talks, awkward questions, and the delicate dance of making sure every student feels included and valued.
So, whether you're a seasoned PE pro or a newbie health teacher, join us for some laughs and lessons on this week's episode of Teachers Off Duty. Just don't forget to stretch first!

Y’all should do an episode on religions in classrooms! There’s so much gray area regarding what different religions and beliefs can be taught and what students can ask questions about. And I’m sure there’s plenty of stories about it too!
I'm the total opposite of this crew, lol. I flunked Phys ED every year because back in my day they wouldn't accommodate for disabilities. I think the curric in some areas has improved, but generally PE is sport based, and sport is NOT the same thing as fitness for it's own sake. I'm a professional *fitness* instructor now, but I still can't do any sports because of my vision impairment.
So, folks like me who always flunked PE, you're not unfit, you're just not sporty and those are 2 different things.
I used to watch a lot of teachers that have been on this show separately so I was so excited when i found Teachers off Duty a little bit ago! Love you guys
In my p.e class we change, do the warm up routine and play sports, right now we are in Volleyball. But this year what I found interesting was that they teached us about cpr and we all practiced on manquinnes I found that pretty educational.
That’s so cool I wish my school did that, imagine if all schools had that so many lives could be saved
I remember asking in high school if accidentally taking more than one pill was abusing drugs and if GERD was an eating disorder. Apparently the answer to both was yes. (this health class obviously covered teen health related issues like drug addiction and eating disorder types. Not body image but still better than most).
Note to teachers teaching that curriculum: I would redirect to a doctor for the GERD thing and for the pill thing recommend a tablet separater.
Gym class is really underrated. We didn't use the term "safe adult" when I was a kid. I was born in 1993. However, I just remember my 7th grade gym teacher was that for me. I ran into him when I was 19 (turns out his in-laws were my grandparents neighbors). and he was still the same nice guy.
My school district didn't teach about sex ed until 10th grade but in 8th we had a health class that showed us Supersize Me and another movie that absolutely demonized sugar... that was the year I developed an eating disorder
Literally same thing with me. Didn’t help that I was also already insecure so it just further pushed my ED
JROTC and Band are elective and also PE classes.
I’m from Washington and just graduated with a PE degree. It is actually called a PESH degree which is physical education and school health. 1/2 of my classes were PE and the other half were health. It is interesting treating to me how the same degree changes from college to college. I love hearing from other teachers ❤
Wow I really needed to hear the part about social, emotional and physical health. Had a bit of a lightbulb moment for myself
My middle school had 3 quarters of P.E. where we would have it every other day then for 1 quarter we would have it every other day because of A and B days
My food plate is still not correct as a healthy diet. Its heavily influenced by big companies paying the government to have things seem more important than they are
Physical education was required every year of middle school and you had to take it once in high school and then a physical class like walking wellness or yoga
My gym teacher in elementary wouldn’t let me go to the bathroom half way into gym. She said “ well you have a FIVE minute snack time before this you should have gin then “ ( I should also note this was In second grade) she told me I had to owe MY WHOLE RECESS!!! Luckily my actual teacher only had me owe 5 minutes. She would have told me nothing but she couldn’t completely override it she had to still have me owe some recess.
We have to go through a lesson which is an hour long every year that is about like what to do when you have your period and like how to take care of your body and sometimes we have special guests. I always dread that day because the topic is just so awkward.

Edit: It's the next day and I think I jinxed it. Our lesson is tomorrow and it's gonna be like 3 hours long.
Nice one thanks for your flashlights and thanks again for taking the holiday
when it comes to classroom management, a lot of the strategies that we were told to use did not work with my students lol. The best way to assess is to see what your students react well to and go from there.
Wow i really needed to hear the part about social.

I was honestly surprised how they didn’t talk about how PE has become a free class. The middle school students in my area have learned that they can choose to sit out and still pass the class! It all goes back to mental health though, but still I could never be proud looking back at a F in PE🤔
Thanks
Yes
yall got grossed out on the miracle of life video, yet i watched it on my own when i was in 3rd grade and loved it because i was very interested and passionate about going into medicine when i grew up, so i loved te real deal science and medical vids and documentaries.
Love you guys, so informative 👌🏻
Growing up with a nurse as an aunt, nothing phases me. I've assisted with surgery.
GREAT episode!!!!!!
Have fun 😀
I am honestly still scarred from elementary PE. I am actually a very active human that loves non-competitive or self-competitive activities like yoga, Pilates, hiking, pole dancing.
P.E. was a contributor to a fairly severe eating disorder. Won’t go into but the PE teacher/coach used to weigh us publicly and commend and lived on the anger trumps compassion train car. It was horrible - and he obviously hated nerds. This was many years ago and hopefully it is no longer an issue modern day.
Turns out I love movement based activities but I will never be good at dodgeball - and at my age no one gives a duck. The whole picking teams thing - no fun - let me get my Pilates, yoga, or non competitive jog on. I do so many things to get out of PE - chorus, literature club, obviously art, and even debate.
Hopefully all has changed given it is 2023.
Xoxo
When I was in school there was ONE day in all of middle school and high school that addressed eating disorders. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, and kids as young as six are being hospitalized in children’s residential ED programs. I think that they focus on healthy eating and there was some curriculum that my step son brought home in 2nd grade talking about how food fell into good and bad categories. He was afraid to eat pizza because he thought that was a “bad” food, and that is absolutely wrong. I spent from 15-23 yrs in and out of hospitals being force fed because of my anorexia. Years of working with nutritionists have taught me that you don’t label foods good and bad. It’s about teaching moderation and knowing that you can eat two pizzas of pizza and your body won’t revolt. I mentor young girls struggling with eating disorders, and even now schools are not addressing the epidemic. Things haven’t gotten better when it comes to eating disorders, things have gotten worse, kids are younger and younger. The thing about eating disorders is that long term recovery is hard, it take work and there is a high relapse rate. I’ve been in recovery for 14 yrs and everyday I have to make the choice to keep fighting. It is so important we teach kids about EDs, the importance of positive body image, and teaching that healthy nutrition is about moderation and being active. I’m not sure how much more my heart can take seeing six year olds with tubes down their noses because they won’t eat in fear of being fat.
As for our sex talk, we had our period talk in 4th grade. I remember vividly a boy got in trouble when we came back together after the talk and he said loudly that the girls got tampons. He was sent to the office. Then in 6th grade the taught us kind of about sex and stds. They gave us all a pretzel, had us pass it around the room, and when it went around the nurse asked us if we wanted to eat the pretzel after everyone touched it. Basically, telling us if we were with too many partners we would be the untouchable pretzels. My mom was very open about sex and teaching me about safety. It used to embarrass me, but I realize I was lucky to have a mom that actually talked to me about things.
Thanks for sharing, Weldon,,
I went to school in California for elementary school, and at that time, the classroom teachers had to teach PE. Then I moved to Texas for 5th grade, and there were actual PE teachers. The school nurse taught the puberty portion on one day. Boys and girls separated. Then, fast forward to 7th grade and puberty/sex Ed was a week long portion. It included "The Miracle of Birth" video, and again, genders were separated. The science teachers had to teach the information. I think the worst part was the students who purposely asked provocative questions that they knew the teacher wouldn't be able to answer due to limitations. Then, in high school, we were required to take health education, which was usually taught by the coaches. The sixth grade coaches did the scoliosis screening and also taught basic nutrition (at that time the food pyramid). All this to say, many teachers are having to teach outside of their initial scope of practice at some point in their career.
Sympathizing big time with Gabe on the sub plans, when I was a substitute that was generally the norm for about 75% of the teaching jobs I took- ESPECIALLY when it came to classroom equipment or how the sub binder was organized and how directions were worded (Literally one of my first jobs was teaching a Kindergarten class and the teacher made a big deal about using "The LadyBug", Kids complaining about not seeing the work books or the read aloud book? just use the Ladybug! Turns out that was the projector equipment 😓). If there's ever a substitute at our school now I try to go above and beyond to help them with sub plans and any questions about equipment, classroom management etc.
If I remember right the school I went to we had these days PE and these days Health it seemed to be about every other day. It was the same teacher for both.
0:27 has anyone else ever noticed that Mrs. Woolley doubles as the bartender? 😂
One thing I wish I learned before this year is that metabolism can affect monthlies. I didn't know till this year that my metabolism is extremely high, so I get lightheaded sometimes during that time and all it means is I need a lot of carbs so my body can function during that time. If I knew this sooner then I wouldn't have freaked when I got so light-headed I feel down back a few years ago
I had to watch the miracle of life when I was in 8th grade!!!! My friend passed out. he was fine but apparently couldn't handle blood
You all are amazing
I like how Tell's shorts look exactly like my PE shorts
I love you guys so much!!!
Well done very good and nice work experience teacher's
PE teacher 2011 made us pinch our skin and measure how much it was and then would tell us how fat that meant we were
Told me i was, but i was underweight
Great memories
I did the pacer test in fourth grade.
Important to all
Well spoken people
I’m from Fargo too!
Very nice and beautifully explained ❤
You guys should bring in a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher to talk about their experiences with teaching those child development class or cooking class or just about there classroom things.
Thanks for this video 📸
Wow great Covering Health and Fitness in Education is so Hard .great All are best👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I'm the total opposite of this crew, lol. I flunked Phys ED every year because back in my day they wouldn't accommodate for disabilities. I think the curric in some areas has improved,
In my high school, the P.E. teacher doesn't even try to get us pumped or less bummed when we have to be extremely physical😭 My district is very big on sports, and this teacher is a major sports buff kind of guy, so he could handle the physical activity way easier than us (except maybe those on varsity teams). I remember I'd get really shaky halfway through the period, or I'd see spots when we'd run up and down all the bleachers' stairs.
I've started using "Here Yee, Here Ye" and my kids respond its so good lol
I go to a school that has 315 kids with 7-12. Very small. Until I watched this I had no idea that people combined pe and health. That is CRAZY
I love you guys. So much
When you guys were talking about balancing your social and physical and emotional it made me want to play Sims
so true
Does any one else love this 😀 😍 ❤️

Love this
Very informative sessions
We didn't watch a video for 5th grade or 7th we just relied on our parents and my mom taught me about it. I wish my school had that
Outstanding
I remember I had a teacher who would say, “Marco,” and students would say, “polo!” The teacher would say it at even the softest volumes and it seemed to work. 🤷🏻♀️
Very informative season
That is a teacher at my school!!!!!!
Which one?
Very inspiring story❤❤

Great episode,👍
I’m 27, and back in 5th grade they separated boy and girls to give us the puberty talk. But we didn’t have actual sex Ed until 10th grade.

As a Michigan resident, I can attest that it is TRUE! Midwesterners need PE to graduate 😂
😊😊 very inspiring story
Can I just say, when I was growing up, I spent sooo much time moving around growing up between the ages of 2nd grade and 6th grade that I had to go through the puberty video and conversation 5 TIMES!! Worst experience of my life!!
