"I have too much respect...to want to destroy it and rebuild it in my image." Then he immediately mutilates and disfigures the turtles so they'll look different. He could've just had them wear different costumes like some other iterations did. Or use different shading on them to make their skin colors different like the toys did.
when I read the image run my biggest issue was the simple fact it was tied to the the Savage Dragon canon. Everytime that book got referenced I would go wait what that doesn't work with the Mirage comic. The Turtles were no long the center of their own universe they were just a piece of someone else's now and that just didn't work.
to be frank, the image comics were a mess in themselves, and while a few of them were supposed to exist in the same verse, none of it was consistent. There was still the sense (to me) that they had their own space. I therefore personally did not mind terribly, and what’s more, I was glad they would have a steady supply of random mutants to turn into mince. I understand the complaint but I think due to how disorganized and random the image comics were as a whole, it may not have turned out so badly, eventually.
@@elmatasesues3630 What was going on at Image anyway? There were a lot of comics there that started ou good like Wetworks & Hellshock, but they took forever to get new issues out. Gen 13 & Wetworks also had the problem of constantly changing writers & artist midway through story arcs so you're left with an inconsistent plot with very little pay off since the new writers were often much worse than the original authors.
I never felt like the turtles took a backseat to the Image characters. But if you didn't care about or like the Image characters, I could see why you could get annoyed.

Cool to see you tackle such a strange time in TMNT comics. While not on the same level as Mirage, this volume is still fun and feels like something that would belong to TMNT. Will you ever review the Tales of TMNT cartoon based on Mutant Mayhem.
I made it like 3 or 4 episodes into the Tales show. It's almost unwatchable. Feels like it's 15 frames per second or something. Doubt I'll make a video on it anytime soon.
Chad Image Shredder Raph vs Virgin IDW Dark Leo I really like Image Raph volunteered to be Shredder instead of being brainwashed. He didn't even become a bad guy.

Taken on its own merit and not connected to the mirage runs I liked it. It was very difficult and I kind of thought of it as a parallel universe version of the tmnt.
It is a really weird run on the Turtles. I ran across it recently on a pirate site. Now seeing some of the production notes of it and the timing of the licensing it makes sense. Kevin and Peter were both disenchanted. Licensed back to an Indie Comic Company which was an extension of their roots. Sign off on creative work and collect a check without having to do anything. Mutilation if the characters didn’t matter because they had lost some control with Turtlemania. Might have been an unconscious thing for Laird who had his grievances with it all and his former partner. Sales take a dump. Checks not coming in. Peter takes the reigns back and disavows the previous work KNOWING it left a bad taste in the fandom’s collective mouth. No hard feelings from the Creative Team at Image and the rest is history. Funny thing, I just looked at it as strange tales of TMNT just like we have all the different incarnations of the franchise today.
I loved Ralph with a Casey Jones Mask, Shredder costume, Eyepatch, and the American Flag Casey Jones mask, but I like the O.G. looks of the turtles. Changing the look of the character long term bothers me almost as much as replacing character with other characters. When I pick up a TMNT book I want them to look like the TMNT. Archie comic Ralph wore a black costume for a few issues, but he eventually took it off. When you disfigure a character there is no simple way to return them to normal. In the end, they could have used letter belt buckles, different belts straps like the playmates toys, different body types like the 2012 series, and Out of the Shadows game.
I loved this series. As to the low sales I remember this series being very difficult to find. I only randomly found issues and never got to read the series chronologicaly as intended. I would reread the 5 issues I had while I waited for the books to be found. (Being before the internet age it really was a wild hunt for comics.)
I remember the buzz around the run coming out and the hate the book got. I based my opinion of the run on word of mouth at the time and didn't even bother to try it for myself. After watching this video I'm glad I passed on it at the time. Maybe that's still wrong of me to think that why but it just doesn't sound like something I would care for. Anyways thank you for the great video and I'm looking forward to the next one stay safe and have a wonderful day
It definitely went a route that was far different from what Kevin and Peter probably imagined. I still love the Image run for it's returned of the serious dark moments that the early issues had. Sure it had many turns but it was to be expected.
I liked the early issues of this run when I was a kid but fell off at some point. Probably when they started mixing superheroes in. I recently read the color version and I gotta say I prefer the black & white
It's a different story/universe, (my head canon) and I really like everything about it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ From begging to end ♥ Weather it's the best or not, depends on the individual reader. For me personally, as someone who never had a comic book store around growing up, (still don't..) and grew up with the cartoons, I give it a perfect 10/10. Like the Mirage TMNT (10/10) I had that plastic TMNT cup. It was my favourite. I used it to its fullest. RIP plastic TMNT cup..
I still have the #2 lady ninja clan comic, was the only one I was able to pick up back in the day. The total tone shift was neat, VERY action packed, real shame they dropped the ball so hard with it.
