    Clip 16 ( 6:33 ) happened to me on my first driving test. There was a big enough gap for them to pull out safely (it was a 30 road) but they chose to wait until the last minute, causing me to emergency stop! The examiner complimented me on my reaction time and assured me they were at fault. Unfortunately that made me unsettled and I made a silly mistake on my move off safety later on in the test which is what failed me! Got my next test coming up soon so hopefully all goes well! Just want to say Ash your videos have been so helpful, especially this series which helps myself and other learners to be aware of the dangers that can occur!

      Entirely the cyclist's fault as there is no cycle lane at the point of the incident and he is undertaking. The cycle lane clearly starts some way past the junction.

    • @tomneedham3431
      @tomneedham3431 3 роки тому +1

      @@tomneedham3431 Not essentially anything, it's filtering, 100% legal and motorists are reminded to be wary of bikes/motorbikes doing that. • @tomneedham3431
      @tomneedham3431 3 роки тому +1

      @@Gobtik I am sure they do, never claimed they didn't. This is why I said it is essentially an undertake. Not an actual one. I'd still be wary of the fact that most drivers are not going to check their left mirror while turning right at a junction.
      I agree, passing on the left is something cyclists should be looking to do as it means they only have to contend with a curb and one car, rather than oncoming traffic. However, passing while the vehicle in front is turning is, in my opinion, not the best of ideas and in this scenario has proven the incorrect decision. Waiting behind the car for it to turn, or completely stop wouldn't have caused this collision :)

    4:10 I would say the cyclist was definitely too close, and gave himself less than a 1 meter gap to pass the car, which could have swerved left to avoid the car trying to join the road.
    I get that it is tempting to pass slow traffic on the left but those were "normal road conditions" and he should probably have stayed behind and waited, just like a car would have had to do.
    And I think the Seat wasn't looking far enough ahead or something, they kind of looked surprised to see the merging car.
    In the Seat's position I would have kept going with caution, in order to shield the cyclist from being hit by the white car.

    • @martinhowes1496
      @martinhowes1496 3 роки тому

      @F1 The cycle lane runs the entire length of that road and is broken where the road was too narrow to continue it leading to a lot of examples of cars just merging into cyclists after being able to drive past easily moments before. The clip in the video starts during one of those breaks and most likely the car would have overtaken the cyclist moments before. That junction is also notorious as its a very very busy road so drivers get impatient and just pull out too and at the bottom of a reasonably steep hill meaning most cyclists are going well over 20mph and often at the same speed as the traffic around them.

      Yep, I used to drive one at my work (I'm in a slightly larger VW Crafter these days). Reversing a van always carries risk because of the lack of a rear window and rear view mirror. Only a total muppet would face one of those into a parking space.

    Looks like a BMW in clip 8 doing the overtake - what a surprise! Clip 10, for me, is too close to the car in front and not reading the road.

    Clip 15 the crossover in Newcastle always has been a pain whether it's rush hour or not, there's a few of these on the inner city motorway, Toon taxi drivers give the scousers a run for their money as well.

    I agree with others, I just do not understand people who do not reverse into a parking slot.
    With supermarket carpark slots so narrow, reversing out is dangerous. Especially with small children, the elderly and people pushing trollies walking behind to their own cars. It should be law that people should reverse into a slot and then drive out.
    I have not been to a supermarket where I cannot leave enough room to open my boot and place my shopping bags in, so there really is no excuse.

    Most vans have solid back doors to stop thieves , the easy way to sort this is to reverse into a parking space

      @Ribeirasacra 3 роки тому

      It may well have a solid bulk head to stop the load form crashing into the occupants too. Blacked out windows are not the only issue for the driver.

    That cycle clip around 4:25 I'd say there are three people at fault here. The cyclist could see the car emerging from the right and IMO I would not have tried passing at this point and made space for something to go wrong, the Silver car (Seat) should have checked their mirror on approach to the hazard in the road to see the cyclist, and should NOT have swerved to avoid a collision, and finally, the white Astra should in no way have been blocking half the road, looks like they were trying to cut up traffic, its not like traffic coming from the other direction is that busy so there's no need to be in the road like that. So I'd dish out responsibility 33% each way, as not one person directly involved was helping the situation.

      I'd say the main fault goes to the cyclist. You can't just be thinking about the car in front, you also need to look at what's in front of him. I would regard filtering near junctions just as dangerous as overtaking, in short, drop back and give yourself more space, especially as there was a vehicle emerging ahead. The silver car should be checking his mirrors also, but being as the traffic was clear on the right, I think the driver of the white vehicle was correctly creeping and then waiting for a gap to fit into.

    1:03 Blacking out the back windows. He may have had a full bulkhead fitted completely negating an interior mirror. I had this arrangement for security and it sort queries the MSM procedure , centre and left etc. You find yourself trying it when you change car to van.

    The so-called cycle path at4:03. The cyclist wasn't in the cycle lane during the vehicle stop. That occurred after. The car driver braked because someone appeared to be pulling out in front of him/her. And the cyclist was asking for trouble by undertaking when the vehicle in front had not given any turn indication.

    clip #10- I think the main fault was the white vauxhall pulling out in front of the seat, however the seat could have started slowing earlier, just another case of "they must have seen me".
    The cyclist could have slowed earlier too, about the point when the seat moved in front before it was braking, in this case the cyclist wasn't "looking 10 seconds down the road", he was looking at the back of the seat

    5:56 is the worst junction I've ever had to drive through. It's a motorway with a major road joining from the right into the overtaking lane, and another from the left. Then a left exit about 400 yards later. Not defending the taxi driver but that stretch of road is a deathtrap

  • @shadowstar68

    Clip 10 - Reviewing this as a cyclist myself. The cycle lane doesn't start until AFTER he goes past the offending vehicle. If there is one before it appears to end at around the zebra crossing. I also note a 20 second time gap in the video. However, when it jumps in just at the zebra crossing, if we look ahead, we see a junction with a van emerging. No way would I want to be that close to the vehicle in front coming up to that situation, I'd rather drop my speed and give myself more room.

    Clip 16, Should've either beeped earlier, or not at all there fella. If you're going to stop in time anyway its faster to do so and let them continue, using your horn only made them react by stopping in your path and made things take a bit longer. Whereas if you beeped a couple seconds earlier they'd have stopped out of your path and you would be free to roam on by.

    Merry Christmas! Clip 10 - On the face of it looks like the cyclist was following too closely. Difficult to properly say though without the full clip. Looks like the cycle lane appears and disappears, pretty common design problem. Car pulling out not helping though that would have rung alarm bells for me.

    I have seen a lot of beat the learner syndrome in your videos and has a bus driver I experience a hell of a lot of beat the bus syndrome. Most driver's don't seem to want to let buses out even though it says in the highway code "give way to buses and trams has they have priority"

      My uncle is a bus driver. Way too many times he’s come across ‘beat the bus’ syndrome. The worst he reckons is when he’s pulling out of those recessed bus stops at the side of the road and people try and force their way past rather than waiting behind at a slow pace or moving into the other lane.

      @@eliz_scubavn yep and the amount of people who see you setting of and then they accelerate and beep just so they can beep you even though they saw you pulling it.

    • @eliz_scubavn
      @eliz_scubavn 3 роки тому

      @@nickwragg there’s a road near to me where this happens regularly. It’s a straight dual carriage way and visibility down the whole length of the road is very good. About halfway down there’s a recessed bus parking bay and stop and buses stop there regularly. There’s been a LOT of near misses and actual collisions caused because of what you describe, with impatient drivers seeing buses pulling out and then trying to get past them by passing at stupidly close range. More than once the left hand corner of the bus has ended up going into the driver’s side door or into their drivers side.
