Before I watched Monster, I saw this clip out of context and thought that Johan was the protagonist looking for supernatural monsters and was frightened by something he saw in the picture book. Oh how wrong I was.
You may not be that wrong, actually. Tenma is the protagonist but he is most definitely looking for monsters even if they are not supernatural. And Johan is frightened by something he saw in the picture book...or more to the point, by what the book represents.
I like how, despite being an antagonist of Anti-Christ proportions, Johan is still shown to have some weaknesses. He childhood was shaped by factors outside his control, and when those factors re-surface, he is as helpless as the next person. That makes his character far more interesting.
Like alot of us, some more in proportion snd more extreme in nature snd yet other still make the choice to go down either past the one that of strife being the easiest and most popular. There are no villains or heros in life, thats only an aspect of the people. People there are only people

I read the manga when I was in high school,and I still remember that chill feeling when the manga abruptly changes into that children's book, and that creepy story Monster without a Name haunts me for years. the second manga/graphic novel that had such a impact on me is Watchmen
This was very much important for the psychological aspect of his character. Despite the fact that no matter how much you dive into the never-ending darkness and reality of this world, how much you accept it and try to change it, there are still some memories which will terrify you and make you conflicted. He said that there is no things such as monsters, Johan was also a human who realised after regaining his memory after seeing that picture book that he isn't a nameless monster anymore which drastically changed his plans and rather than killing schuwald, he just sat the library on fire and showed him what he always wanted to see. Johan then set a journey to know about his forgotten pieces of memory of his past. He visted parague, the town where he was raised in and then the rose manson. After gaining his all past memories, he just decided to do a perfect suicide, leaving no trace of his existence and just killed everyone who is vulnerable to him. And his final target was klaus poppe.
