Note that the position of the 'baloon piston' is 90 degrees (quadrature) to the wire wool displacer, so that the connection to the crankshaft is simple. both piston rods connect at the same point.
I really like this simple design that avoids the need for finely machined piston/cylinder assemblies. . It would also be easy to upscale to bigger components, and to create a multicylinder engine with this approach. Well done!! I am going to start looking for a serious length of steel pipe and a car tyre tube.
I think I will have to keep on & get the crankshaft straight, simply making with a series of bends. It would be more likely for me to get it straight & true than to make those attachment points hold.
This is an atmospheric pressure Stirling - they don't produce a lot of power. However, I'd be interested in mounting a magnet on the power piston shave and wrapping a coil of wire around that PVC pipe, and seeing what kind of current I could draw from it. If you sealed this up better and put pressurized helium in it, then you'd be able to get more power from it.
Make another one, but this time add a crank to one of the wheels with a magnet that goes through some wire coils and measure the voltage you get out of it.
Have you thought about trying to measure the power output? Possibly by connecting it to some measurable load. If you could also measure the power put in as heat then you can calculate the efficiency.
Lovely project but I think you could have shown and explained how you heated and cooled the air in the cylinder , I gathered from the comments , nevertheless great project , will try it!

A Holley carburetor vacuum secondary diaphragm works great for the cold piston, versus balloons or rubber glove material. Not cheap, but I’ve got several just sitting there.
@@ludicscience a large flat steel washer with a 2” diameter center hole will clamp the Holley secondary diaphragm onto the bottom of a small 10 ounce steel coffee can. Could easily be incorporated into your designs, and it’s a viable, replaceable part.
@@ludicscience I’m building the Stirling engine, & I came up with a great idea!!! I have an old carburetor system from an old 8 HP Briggs & Stratton gas engine. I don't know if you are still active or not but would you mind explaining how the stirling engine works and why the steel wool also needs to go up and down? Like does the steel wool go up when its hot and push the crankshaft or does it just act as a piston? If it just acts as a piston, can I use any other object of the same size?
The steel wool is the loosely fitting displayer piston to move the air around and at the same time it works as a regenerator, keeping the hot and cold side better isolated.
It is powered by the difference in temperature between top and bottom. In this case handle heats and water cools. Air inside expands and contracts moving the piston
KTProjects yea the water isn’t 100% critical but it works on a temperature difference so water keeps it cooler so it’s more efficient and will run longer as the top won’t heat up
Stirling cycle is based on a pressure change, hot end (high pressure) cold end (low pressure) there is a displacer inside the CAN. The CAN is a sealed which is IMPORTANT. The displacer moves from TOP to BOTTOM of the can. It literally "displaces" the air, so the air moves locations from TOP to BOTTOM, at the TOP the air cools => low pressure at the BOTTOM the air is heated => High pressure. Since the can is sealed those pressure changes drive the balloon or diaphragm in and out, a mechanical linkage connects the diaphragm to the displacer in such a way that the cycle continues . So No exhaust, if a leak exists it would simple lower the performance of the engine.

some info. at 6:13, the mass and its distribution, in each flywheel are Not optimal/effective. at 7:06, imo, the diaphragm is excessively noisy; and this suggests inefficiency. it is understood that different cold-side designs have differing noise levels. ideally, a diaphragm should act as an airtight, low-tension, centering spring; note that where the linkage connects to it, the diaphragm is LIMP. in other words, No centering affect is happening. consequently, the potential reward for the use of a diaphragm, is Not there. the use of a balloon, frequently, results in a low-quality diaphragm. at 7:22, can you see that, due to its Location, the water is doing NOTHING. googletranslate

nice design and great running engine

Cam we use a lower quality steel wool(steel scrub)???
the idea is that it doesn't let that much air pass through, steel wool probably wont work as well.

You need to show " the upper part" is it filled with water?
That’s exactly what I was wondering. It seems to look like and it would create the temperature difference needed
