Living on Gun Lake

Gun Lake is one of Michigan’s premier waterfront destinations and southwest Michigan's LARGEST all-sports lake! Located in Yankee Springs and Orangeville Township in Barry County, and in Wayland and Martin townships in Allegan County. The lake is approximately 27 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. It covers 2,680 acres of surface water, up to 66 feet deep, and an estimated 24 miles of shoreline including several islands. This fantastic lake is sought out for its location, size, fishing, swimming, water sports, and community features. This lake also has a boat launch, fishing pier and campground with several inlet channels into this expansive waterfront.
There are several legends around determining how Gun Lake was officially named. According to a majority of the locals in the area, there was a battle between the Ottawa and the Potawatomi Indians. During this battle, the Native Americans involved fought with firearms, which they obtained in the fur trade with white men. Once the battle was over and the men declared peace, the chief of the winning tribe ordered that the guns be thrown into the lake. Thus, the name “Gun Lake,” was born.
Local shopping, dining and conveniences can be found in Shelbyville, Middleville, Hastings, Plainwell or Wayland as well as many established businesses around the lake. Just around the corner is the popular Gun Lake Casino which is Western Michigan’s newest gaming and entertainment destination conveniently located in between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo and is the closest gaming facility to West Michigan residents.
