Great to see David back in front of the camera. If I had decided to keep my dad’s 57 F100 I would have thought hard about converting it to electric. A truck that was far from stock with its Buick V6, GM rear end and three on the tree.
23:15 The interesting thing about EV trucks is that when you drive up a mountain unloaded and drive back down loaded, you can actually generate additional energy. You're essentially converting the potential energy of the materials your hauling down the hill into actual driving energy that the truck can use. So you just made a "self-charging" truck. 😛
I would love to see community colleges and vocational schools offer classes on converting existing ice trucks cars and vans to electric vehicles. I could see it being a big industry especially if it could be done inexpensively. A lot of people would love to save older vehicles and be able to daily drive or work out of them.
The problem is that it cannot, in fact, be done inexpensively. On the podcast they said that this truck has about $30k of electrical parts in it, including $21k of batteries, for 100 miles of range.
Fantastic video. This is such a neat old truck. It's great to see David again and I hope you guys find a new project for him for a new series. He did a great job on your off road obstacle course at Tumble weed ranch. Thanks guys
we cut up a georgia pine after lightning a few years ago at the house. 30 inch diameter, you are welcome to move that. a 3 foot cut is man weight for sure. :)
Man I really would love to build one of these as a work truck. No maintenance and can charge back at the ranch. Would love a cost analysis on this truck.
@Menti Capti You should try reaching out to Kyle Connor from Out of Spec. He would be interested in something like this too and has contacts over at Magna. They were a sponsor of his for awhile.
Nice part about this is that it’s still the F100/F250 Frankenstein they started with, but with a lot more power, even more torque that comes on even quicker than the 300ci would. I wasn’t surprised by it’s performance at the ranch, but then to be within .5kW/hr of a new Lighting Pro when it comes to electricity use while heading back to their ranch after all that, I thought that was fantastic!
100%. I have an active aversion to acre size touch screens, heated and cooled cup holders, and power butt scratcher/nose pickers. Give me a basic truck, 4wd, 8 foot bed that I can fit a sheet of plywood in and close the tailgate, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power locks, heater and AC. That's it. Stop there. No reason it should cost more than $25k brand new.
I won’t warm up to EVs until they find a better way to make batteries that doesn’t involve child labor in places like Africa, not to mention the batteries are horrible for the environment if not properly dealt with after they are dead.
@@ravioli-bamboli I agree with you on this, not only are they bad on the environment to recycle or dispose of but they're also bad on the environment just digging up the lithium. It takes thousands and thousands of gallons of water not to mention what they are doing to the earth by digging craters that's hundreds of feet deep.
I love everything about this truck: the color, the wheels, the tyres, the way it stands on the road, the battery size. I wish they made it production. How much did it cost you Andre?
We all know the industry doent test trucks like trucks any more. If i buy a truck I fully expect to do truck things in it aka no fiber glass no aluminum to save on weight i need a truck bed that i can thow a 10 foot log in and the log gets the dent
The guy with the Ranger comment is spot on. Ford was making electric Rangers back in the ‘90’s. One of our local [West Michigan] power companies had a few in their fleet that their readers/inspectors were using.
you can tell this is some kind of soft very light wood, i load my 1978 f-100 with 2000 lbs of oak logs and you cannot handle them like theses light logs.Mine is a dana 44 w/locker,351w, c6 never any problems and truck only weighs 3900 lbs. When i load it it still weighs less then a new truck.
Fantastic episode Andre. Well filmed too showing the mountains as the truck descended the hills. Great top off at the end with the public conversations. 👌
I absolutely LOVE this! You guys are on the CUTTING edge of all things trucks and it's the best thing on YT. Right alongside the guys who did the 66 f100! ecoboost swap
Always great to see David on TFL, the yaks were a bonus! Nice build and nice video Andrey and team. FYI, I'd buy this EV converted truck over the lipstick Jag every day of the week. It looks like fun, but might need a noise-cancelling headset/intercom system for occupants to talk. 🙂
Thay was super cool, I'm excited about the ev conversion scene moving forward. Maybe by the time my Subaru kicks the bucket there will be an easier drop in kit.
I think you should take the interior out of the truck and put some lizard skin down in the cab or sound debtening material. This will probably help with the noise inside and especially when filming inside the cab.
Now That's What I'm Talking About. Damn good load in the bed And towing a sled. Fabulous Stuff. David is The Man Funny Chap Too. Think Andre scared him a bit when he started to talk romantic though. Never sell this truck Lads. 🙏 Now you need to do the same test on all of the other trucks and get David's Winter Fuel all home for him at the same time. I don't think any of them will beat Chargezilla.
From the outside looking in I believe trying to laws together, would have prevented them from rolling down the hill. But no worries I absolutely 💯 love the show and the info y’all provide!
This is fantastic. What would be the total out of pocket cost for this type of conversion? I really like the idea but don’t know if it’s cost effective enough for me to attempt. With all the sponsors involved, it makes me think these type of swaps at still far too expensive to do for an individual. Perhaps as they become more popular the cost will ease. I currently have a 1964 LWB step side 2WD 3/4 ton that would be a wonderful candidate for this type of swap.
When you’re at that altitude is there a worry about causing a fire from the temperature and humidity reaching just the right point? The E-100 is a beast. But how well can it do Ike with a trailer?
1st off it's a shame to see the ford straight six pulled, I had one with three in the tree manual, wonderful loooong gears. I would definitely go with a conversion truck after seeing that f100 pull a ton. Wonder if a light weight camper with all electric services could be a thing, imagine no propane, no diesel heater.
It’s about time you got the top guys of TFL together and made a great video I’m not a fan of destroying the old truck but I can now respect what went on because David approve’s . But I still want to keep old trucks original just how I am 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
So is that truck full time 4WD now with the electric conversion? Does the low range 4WD still work, or is all that stuff non-functional since the conversion?
I have a question for David. What’s his way to stop the log from pinching the bar on the chainsaw when you saw through a log on the ground? The bane of my existence cleaning sloughs on the farm.
If you can roll it up on another log in a manner where the weight of the log you want to saw will be supported by log underneath and saw it right where the log is underneath it, a pinch should be avoided.
Last dude talking about electrifying a Ranger is on the money. A single motor, 40-50kwh battery and you've got a killer short range work truck. Conversion should be 10-15k dollar cheaper. Would still do great in that short range farm truck scenario, or commute. 120hp and 170ftlbs is plenty without a slush box in the way. I like this truck, but it cost too much to convert to make your money back in commuting or farm work.... it's too loud and unrefined to be a good daily anyway. It's not pretty enough to be a show truck. I don't know who or what it is for beyond youtube content.
you forgot the log you puled for an anchor should have maybe cut it up and put in truck just joking you two had two much fun look at the great memories you two are making great great video PRESTON

My first vehicle was a GMC S-15 manual 4-speed. I thought about converting it to electric in the 90s, but I was too young and broke. It would have been a lot more work back then but would be a lot easier today!
Believe it or not GM actually made all electric S series trucks. It was the S10 EV and it used architecture from the EV1 and crammed it into an S10 chassis. According to the Wikipedia article I just looked up as a refresh it was the very first electric pickup, it was also FWD. Yeah it's range and power where kinda sad though.
What about a 4X4 as an EV (or at least plug-in-hybrid) with each axle driven by a different power source? Like, take the front axle out of the transfer case, and drive it by an electric motor, and keep the RWD gasser? I'm not wholly opposed to EV power, but I do not want a digital ride, at all. A carb'd, RWD truck with the front axle motor-driven seems like a possible solution. Plus, the bed has lots of room for batteries.

Truck tests with David doing real work on his ranch are the best!! Did you see the grin on Andre’s face as he drove up the hill? Awesome. . .
Yes!

It was funny when Andrey yelled, “Arnold!” Those dry pine logs are heavy together but nothing like hardwoods.

Watching David catching the board was phenomenal!
I was more impressed by him ripping that 2 by in the air freehand just before.
Whoohoo!
3:47 the old truck in the background, I love it!
I think people will warm up to EV’s more if automakers would make ‘retro’ pickups like this one. Little to no amenities, old school with no frills.
I think you are 100% right, because I am anti-electric when it comes to vehicle's but I really like this truck.

You can tell David is a knowledgeable guy by the way his cable end is saddled properly with 3 clamps and he even taped the ends! A man after my heart!
This is an amazing work truck for a farm./homestead. Looks great in the beat up orange.
Love watching the real world stuff. David and Andre are a great team.
Always love seeing David and that truck! Another great episode!
I love everything about this truck: the color, the wheels, the tyres, the way it stands on the road, the battery size. I wish they made it production. How much did it cost you Andre?
I think they tell you in the last video. If you don’t see before me, I’ll come back with an answer at some point today
@@DeuceFrmEC $40k for battery and drivetrain without the shocks.
@@bluceree7312 got to it before me. I don’t know if that’s a good price or not yet.

I think every truck you review should have to do farm work. Feel like that’s one of the better ways your guys have been testing the trucks lately
💯 Let's light this comment up with 👍 👍👍👍👍

Put the lighting rod up for EV supercharching.

I just saw one driving down the highway last month. Cool to see something like that still being used.
They made electric vehicles back in the 1930's
2500 lbs is an impressive load for that truck. I'm sure it is like most old trucks and is a lot happier with a load on it.

“This is not brokeback mountain” 😂😂😂
Seriously though, we haul heavy every day with our lightnings and they perform marvelously.
My wife asked me why I was laughing, David's statement was it 🤣
Lol the extra "brake" was the most redneck thing I've seen in a while. Had me a good laugh 🤣
Especially since they used a cable instead of chain
When David sayed "stop". I stopped and paused. He got power of his experience and knowledge.
Love to see David he's a man's man and he uses the right tools for the job for sure
David was being romantic by sticking his arm out to save Andre from getting struck by lighting. Hahaha. Great video guys.
Good transition from Andre, “Look, the wipers are working!” That interaction made me chuckle. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching!
If they roll down the hill the seat belts should prevent any injury. 😆 I love the channel, keep em coming.

I find the camera work too jerky sometimes do you use a compensating gimbal? sometimes you get in too close to the subject too.
They're too stupid for a gimbal
I'm glad to see David back!
What’s the 0-60 on that thing? Need an episode of pulling up to lights and challenging sports car drivers...
The only way a truck should ever "squat".
This was great!
I don't think we have tapped into the potential of EV power doing a lot of heavy work. Electric motors have a lot of torque.
Looking forward to seeing stubby up there. Mpg loop empty vs max load of fire wood.
It’s great to see david again! Glad we got him in the video

Also it's much safer to use synthetic lift straps than cables.
A 40ft lift strap costs half as much as a 40ft cable and is also twice as strong.

I would love an old truck electrified.
Can you program the regen to have a low range setting for work or off road?
Best place for an EV is the jobsite, charging is available and range is not an issue🤙
Watching the trees get cut down is satisfying.

So is that truck full time 4WD now with the electric conversion? Does the low range 4WD still work, or is all that stuff non-functional since the conversion?
Can the re-gen be adjusted so it holds the truck back similar to the Ford lightning?
The one touch I would put on it is a custom cover that hide the battery box to look like a standard engine
Did I miss the " How and where you are charging " ? How fast , how long . Etc. ?
Andre, what is the altimeter app that you are using? Thanks!
I hated it right away, but the more I see this pickup pop up in my feed, the more I like it!
Wondering if you guy’s increased the compression on the rear shocks since it’s so easy with the DSC’s.
David knows his geology and does math well. PS Old rancher? David was tossing those logs around like it was easy.
That log isn’t going to stop anything if those brakes give out 😂
Andre hope you keep the truck! Keep giving it work on the farm!
Thank you for watching!
I’m waiting for the “🎉Broke Back Truck on The Moutain ❤” episode, well the more I think about it, maybe not?😂

I agree. I’m the only one allowed to call me old😉
I think that truck just found its future home
Helps that the truck went up the hill unloaded and came down the hill loaded which probably increased the energy in the batteries.
What is the total cost of the conversion?
This is a great series! It has inspired me to add this to my project list for someday once solid state batteries are a thing

Looks like its time for a new seat cover. I would have put a spray in bed liner too.
