If you noticed, both of this and 'Thinking out loud' have been done about four years ago so there surely have been changes along the way. But I appreciate that he arranges his own songs (at least these two anyway) and opts to do them differently.
If you could please react to his cover of 'DIVE' by Ed Sheeran, which was out about four months ago, you may see a difference in voice and style. I'd like to see what you think about it. As usual, yes, he deviated from the original. heeee. :)
Im with u guys, his runs are perfect! Knowing where and when to use it! Some singers do it overly too much, not knowing when to stop!
Great reaction guys! I COMPLETELY agree with you on the overutilized looong runs...it doesn't exactly make it boring, however, they ALMOST make them seem as if they are "showing off" in a way. If that makes sense. But Daryl did an amazing cover of this but that one longer, IMO "unnecessary" run in the middle COULD have made the version that much better if it wasn't quite as long. Great reaction as usual! Keep them coming guys!
The literature teacher in me loves this - such wealth of material to work with! Daryl's singing - the cadence he gave this song - is an amazing example for the creation of rhythm and meter. I'm going to geek out here because nobody's reading this anyway. The sound devices are everywhere, but I especially love how he sang "galaxy" because the final "ee" sound which is normally ear-piercing when spoken (or sung) in a high pitch can be blunted by following it up with a more rounded vowel sound which he did here by sliding it to "you know." He also changed the pronunciation of 'galaxy' to 'ga-lax-ay' which rounded out that final vowel sound even further. He did the same to "family" so that it sounded like "fa-mi-lay." Brilliant! The final long E sound is really a pet peeve of mine because it sounds primal - just imagine how you scream when you see a cockroach flying towards you. That's the sound that comes out of you - the sound of naked fear. I am going to have fun annotating this song, this performance.

I thought exactly the same. His cover of Thinking Out Loud was good and there's no question about that. But I thought there were more than enough runs that somehow deducted a point from the overall performance 'cause it somehow felt like he was more careful arranging the song with those runs than his concern of the delivery as a whole song(with a few runs maybe). I wasn't too interested in listening to him until I heard his cover of Rude, Dive, and later on, Jealous. I think he's starting to mature even more and now I am sort of a fan, given his musicality seems to deepen the roots.

I actually like it when a performance of an artist is not perfect or always is...it just proves that there's always a room for improvement.
You need to get back to KZ " Close to you" and Haley with Jeff Goldblum.
Of course it's fair to criticize, if you feel it's right. ..and i agree btw. I LOOOVE Daryl's voice, and most of his covers, but i think he does use too many and too long runs sometimes. Someone will get angry over that, and some will miss the positive you say. You can't make everyone understand you, or understand that you have a right to your own opinion either.

I definitely agree guys "thinking out loud" version of his in my opinion was over killed with "runs" BUT he was SO good at it but then again, it was too much to my liking as well.

To me, the runs Daryl did in this cover version were properly placed and tasteful. In the case of another cover version, *Truly* (originally by Lionel Richie), it is one of the few that I think the runs were overly done. Just saying. Listen to it here:
