Great video Darren, I enjoyed this. I hope you do more of these types of reviews. PS I ordered the Viavision Halloween 2 and 3 blu rays from oz, so would be interested to hear your thoughts! 😃
The problem with Aliens is not so much about the grain (even if I prefer grain) but the levels are to bright. Not a single home media release have gotten the brightness/contrast right. Abyss on the other hand looks pretty accurate.
How do you know that Aliens on 4K is too bright? It's definitely brighter than the Blu-ray that was released back in 2011...but why is the brighter picture not accurate...?
The Abyss is a brilliant film and doesn't get mentioned enough. I used to have the VHS but I lost loads of stuff when moving. Im not paying for anything from the USA though. It cost me 12 quid to send the Nightmare collection to someone over there. Great video as always 😊🐾💜👍👋
The thing that I admire about Cameron is that he never makes a movie without pushing the medium forward. He is exactly the filmmaker George Lucas could have been, had he not chose to forgo that path to build a technological empire. I am, however, extremely frustrated that he's just focused his efforts on Avatar all these years. His obsession with the Navi has yielded two spectacular-looking, derivative snoozefests that do not hold up beyond their initial viewings. As for these particular films, Aliens has always seemed a bit overrated to me. I've never quite liked the look of the film. I think he made a real mistake shooting it in 1.85:1 as opposed to 2.35:1 of the original. I also think the lighting has always felt pretty artificial. Still, it's a great sequel to a classic, and I know there's a ton of people that think it's better than the original. The Abyss has always been a personal favorite of mine. This, and Blade Runner were the first two special editions/director's cuts that I ever became aware of as a kid. I've always enjoyed stories set in the ocean, and this one has it all. I saw True Lies the summer I turned 16, and it was one of the greatest cinema experiences I ever had. I remember I saw it alone, and that Jamie Lee Curtis dance scene was something I thoroughly enjoyed. When I was 6 I saw Halloween and I wanted her to be my babysitter because she looked like she'd protect me. When I was 16 I REALLY wanted her to be my babysitter! 😅 I haven't collected physical media in quite some time because I don't have the room for it, but I've been thinking of getting a good 4k player and picking up some special titles like these. I just might. Great video, Darren!
@TSLMoviePodcast That's what scares me. I used to have a pretty sizable collection but now it's just living in my sister's attic. I don't have the room for physical media, though I know how much better it would look than my 4k streaming titles.
I remember seeing Aliens in the theater. The atmosphere was electric, the people were into it, especially the fight scene between Ripley and the Queen. The other sequels were ehh. Aliens was a hard movie to top. RIP Bill Paxton-aka Hudson, " Game Over Man! Game Over!!". True Lies is a perfect blend of avtion and comedy. Tom Arnold deserves s shout out, his performance was actually really good. Keep up the great videos!! Your channel rocks and you and Frank are awesome!! Much success!
Thanks John. I never saw Aliens in the Theatre given the restrictive 18 rating in the UK. My first 18 was a year later with Robocop when I was 14. I somehow snuck in and got turfed out halfway through.
I think James Cameron because he has spent over a decade now making his blue alien cgi Avatar films has forgotten what real people are supposed to look like on film
Haha that's great! It would be class to see The Abyss again. Havent seen it in years. Coincidently I had something of an Alien marathon yesterday myself Darren. Alien 1979 theatrical cut, Alien 2003 director's cut and finally Aliens the original theatrical edition, all presented in 4k HDR and on a 75 inch screen. I became one with my chair by the end of it all
The Abyss looks pretty good and it was a great time on the big screen! Aliens I am very mixed on it and based on technical analyze it looks like they used the old 2K scan instead of rescanning the camera negative at 4K and I don't get why! True Lies seems to have had the least amount of care put into it and it's a real shame!
Curious about the almost cried comment, maybe you could do a show on what makes you cry watching movies. I am often tearful in theatres especially Nolan and Spielberg, most recently Oppenheimer and Minus One had me in tears.
The Abyss has always been cut in the U.K., destroying the flow of the scene as there’s dialogue which overlaps the shots of the submerged rat. Pretty sure the animals act (from almost a century ago) was only ever relevant to actual film, not home video formats, so the fact this movie is still cut is anachronistic and ridiculous. The knife over the fingers thing in Aliens was totally from Dark Star.
I'm not someone who gets into the nitty gritty of 4k. If I watched these movies, I'm sure most of the issues people have mentioned would go over my head. Still, I think it's important for these films to look as close to how they did on the big screen as possible, and anything that's sort of revising that to make it look more modern or sleek should be called out. I used to get rid of my dvd's if I upgraded them to blu-ray or 4k, but I've come to the conclusion it's not a bad idea to hold onto them as some of them may better represent how the film originally looked. Plus, I think some movies are just meant to have a bit more grit to them and not look perfect.
I just watched Aliens last night. I have to say that I was overall pretty happy with the image quality. I don't mind film grain at all, but I always found Aliens to be an exceptionally grainy affair, and despite the quality of the production, looks older than Alien. While there is the odd thing here and there, I have to give them credit for being able to retain as much detail as they did.
In my most humble opinion I believe that Mr.James Cameron brought much more intelligent and excitement to Aliens and forever changed the way I look at how I would want all of the aliens franchise to be !!! But, instead we got Ridley Scott's bogus production of the latter movie's that were and still are a huge let down. You would have figured that Scott would be just a bit more ambitious with his latest works. The first movie was great !!! It laid out the possibilitys of just how this should be going. But than James Cameron brought intense fear provoking anxiety in Aliens. Which turned out to be the absolute greatest of aliens!!! It's a total kick right in the nutts by Scott trying to figure where the aliens came from and above all else just where the engineers came from???? Well, to tell you the truth, I couldn't give a huge pile of crap!!!! Stick with the aliens and forget about why, how, or where !!!!! You took a masterpiece then did a complete 180 on it !!!!
I watched true lies a few months ago along with eraser , both a bit dated but still very fun movies. You can finish up with T, T2, and titanic as another camronathon 😊👍
@@TSLMoviePodcast I quess I'll be doing my cameronthon on vhs 😔.. you've motivated me to dust them off. Great video by the way. Best movie podcast by long shot
The colour grading in Aliens 4K looks absolutely terrible ! I won't buy it because of it also why remove the grain??? All the soul has been drained out from the original footage the 2000s era dvd releases still look the best by miles.
Top stuff Darren, cant wait to get Aliens on 4k regardless of what the lazy b######d has done using AI. Bit cheeky warning us of the dangers of AI then he gets into bed with skynet to fix the upgrade! Love The Abyss as well and at some point i may import it. Trie Lies i can enjoy but to be honest not desperate for a 4k of it. I watched Aliens on Blu-ray last year and i couldn't believe how much better it looked. I could actually see crowe and wierzbowski who are basically extras in the VHS because its so blurred.
Great little vid Darren. Believe it or not I've never watched The Abyss. Released the year I was born. Always remember the VHS case when I was a little nipper. However always went for my Mum's horror collection instead.
Great video Darren, I enjoyed this. I hope you do more of these types of reviews. PS I ordered the Viavision Halloween 2 and 3 blu rays from oz, so would be interested to hear your thoughts! 😃
They’re on the list. I have a bunch of stuff to look at before I get to them but I’ll let you know once I do.
Great vid Darren. I don't believe I've ever seen The Abyss. I'll have to check it out
I love Aliens and True Lies, both are awesome. I have yet to watch The Abyss even though I own the dvd. Great vid Darren!
The problem with Aliens is not so much about the grain (even if I prefer grain) but the levels are to bright. Not a single home media release have gotten the brightness/contrast right.

The abyss is certainly the strongest on the 3

T2 already has a 4k release. However The Terminator has yet to find a release.

You’re right. It would be good to see him do something ‘normal’ again before he throws in the towel.
4k, dolby vision, dolby atmos. the movie are beautiful. ive watched them all twice already. nex
I loved watching them all again, in terms of movies, I didn’t feel True Lies quite has the same impact these days.

I’m not that into 4K to be honest I do see how nice they look but I’m ok with both just Blu Ray! So come one True Lies Regular Blu Ray
and that’s totally cool. It’s an expensive business keeping up with tech
