i tried mixing the drop catch with the live catch it went pretty well.
It was like you move the flipper up and the when the ball is almost hitting it you make a live catch to take the momentum out of the ball and get it under control

Not an easy thing to do. I didn't the term for this. I had been doing that when I played during the 80's. Loved that technique.

Does a drop catch also work do slow down a ball from the inlane?

Sort of. You flip the flipper at the exact moment the ball makes contact with the flipper (as it leaves the lane), which gives the ball a slight jump which in turn kills the energy. Works for me, anyway. Timing as always is the thing.
