She is right, its not the people who can't afford more expensive clothes that isnt the problem, its the influencers that CAN afford to shop sustainable, but they choose the quantity for the views and shock value. Then you never see them wear any of it after they make the haul. I really wish influencers would update us on how long the item lasted and how much use they actually get from the clothes.

@heatherva To be fair, I don't know how representative these hauls are and how much they push up the average. There are people with much smaller orders who don't produce content on social media.
But that alone wouldn't make them so big.

I think it's a little trickier. We know through multiple exposes that influencers don't make as much money as they claim to or look like they have. It's usually rented or sponsored or just faked. But for influencers who can shop sustainable, it often means a higher expense. And a part of influencing is reliability. Given the current economic situation, a lot of people can't afford to shop sustainable and influencers need to be relatable, leading to them buying shein or whatever their audience can afford. This is obviously multi-faceted and not the only reason but it is a major one. But haul culture and bulk-purchasing is definitely not the way to go!

@@heatherva, additionally, though I’ll never tell someone on a tight budget what to do, a smarter approach would be to buy quality clothing on the used market. Especially if sustainability is their passion.
I hated it back then, but my parents were on a tight budget when I was growing up, so my school clothes were quality pieces from thrift stores. As I got a bit older (teens), I was given a budget for new clothes, but I’d pick only a few durable pieces and wear them for the entire year or more. This was way before Shein existed, and Forever 21 hadn’t reached peak popularity.
The great thing is, there are online thrift stores like Thred Up, so if one is looking for a very specific piece, then it likely exists.
As I wrote in my own comment, though, some of my local thrift stores are getting overrun with Shein and its ilk, and dampening the thrifting experience. 😥

I talked to a friend of mine recently, both of us are 30. I was shook that she dismissively said "yeah sure, I am wearing clothes once and then throw them out, why would I not? It's so cheap." Load of lies most stuff on shein is good quality and I have been using for years. Most of our top UK and USA brands factories are in China anyways but they just then sell it for western prices. Most modern brands use slave labour etc unfortunately. Shein quality isn't any different from your average to even expensive brands. I've had a fair amount of things on there all of which are good nice material and have washed and lasted well. Spending more doesn't necessarily equate to better quality fabric. For reference I used to be anti shein for years until I realised Most brands I/we/everyone uses use cheap labour in chineese factories they then just uncharge us...shein doesn't. I have at least 2 dresses I can think of which I paid slightly more for on shein(not cheap shein prices) both are very Unqiue colours and details and have such nice breathable. Shein also refund quicker than any company ever I've done multiple returns with them and they always refund within 2 days of you sending the parcel.

It's occurred to me that if you've truly landed your style, you want to purchase/have things that last, because you like the thing and always want to wear it. You are not entitled to something just because you want it. To desire something does not automatically give you the right to possess it, be this an object or even a human being. @cherryjammusic 3 місяці тому +54

As someone who has had 80% thrifted clothes since childhood (the other 20% mainly being socks and underwear), I will never understand these huge hauls. A 100-item haul of cheap new items would never make me even half as happy as I get when I leave the thrift store having scored 2 or 3 unique pieces in just my size for a good price. It's the thrill of the hunt. It's the payoff that comes when you've wanted a white denim jacket or a pair of plaid pants for months and after all that searching through racks upon racks, you find your grail item and it fits perfectly. And then you cherish and love the clothes you found and wear them all the time, and when people compliment them you get to go "can you believe I found these for only $4 at savers?" And one day if you outgrow or no longer love the piece, you can re-donate it so someone else can have a turn loving it. That feeling will always be miles above the instant gratification of going on one of these fast fashion sites and ordering a cheaply-made garmet that falls apart in 2 washes.
Thrifting also goes a very long way if you're struggling with money. Sure, you can buy more if you go through a fast fashion sit, but its better to thrift fewer items that will last longer. A warm coat, thick socks, a few shirts and some sturdy jeans will go much farther than a bunch of crap that'll fall apart as you're wearing it (and then you're spending more money to replace it all).
None of this is to say you CAN'T buy new clothes. We all deserve to treat ourselves sometimes. I for one like to buy T shirts at concerts, for example. I just think that for everyday life, it does us good both financially and environmentally to wear the clothes that are already here on this planet than constantly purchase brand new stuff. I mean, surely we as a species have enough clothes to go around?

I love to go thrifting, and unfortunately, I’m finding more and more Shein junk on the racks. I have never purchased their clothing new or used, except for one thrifted pair of shoes that I didn’t know were from Shein until after I took them home and researched.
I have a feeling that others feel the same way. My local Goodwills have a system where they’ll mark a certain color tag to 50% off one week, and the next week, a new 50% color is introduced, while the previous week’s color drops to 75% off. I tend to see a lot of Shein clothing get to 75% off, and still no one has purchased it.
Aside from the depressing knowledge that many of these clothes will just end up in landfills, it has taken the joy out of thrifting. The thrill of the thrift store is finding high-quality items for cheap.

If you care about landfills, you should really get some of that shein clothing. Their quality is absolutely fine I've had items from shein that have lasted 5 plus years and by items I mean 15 plus items from them I still have and that I've washed over 100 times. If you would take a walmart item, target or really just about any clothes store that isn't expensive...then you're being petty at this point by not taking shein as quality is fine and it would help planet to guve the clothed the self life they actually di have. Most of the shein stuff that is ending in landfills shouldn't really be there as everything I've got is good quality and will last me many more years to come. They even have their brand glow mode which is a literal lululemon dupe/fake for 1/5 the cost. Amazing soft material and washes really well. Thing is alot of these big companies when you look at where their factories or manufacturing is its China but then they just sell item to us for 5-10x price of shein for same quality...

Part of why the hauls are so ridiculous is to create a “set point” in your mind against which you should compare your purchases. If all the hauls are 50-100 items, your 10 item order seems reasonable, even modest! And now shopping at a regular shop where this same haul money will only get you 1 or 2 or 3 items seems “expensive” and “for rich people”. Because your set point has moved plus inflation has legitimately increased prices but reducing your consumption level can feel bad so you stick with low quality high quantity clothes shopping.

ngl some of the clothes i ordered back then from shein still hold up but most of them didn’t age well and some have started to show signs of wear and close to tearing and i regret spending so much on those clothes. cuz even tho they are cheap, the prices add up the more you buy from them. like im embarrassed to share how much i spent on shein over the span of 4 years, but idek cuz that’s how much it was 💀 but i try not to beat myself up over it cuz i also recognize that i was in a different and dark head space at at the time, and what matters now is that i know better and have snapped out of it.
$900 shein haul is so crazy to me. you could buy better quality pieces with that money that will actually last and make you happy. in fact, i can’t imagine casually dropping $900 on a clothing shopping spree of all things. as much as ive bought due to my shopping addiction, ive never spent that much money at once on clothes because that just sounds so unnecessary and extra 😭

THIS. I'm absolutely certain that this is Shein's marketing strategy, and that these people aren't buying for a vacation or anything like it. The hauls have the same relation to reality that a Glamour magazine photo spread does -- the company has said 'here, have these free clothes and say that you bought them for 'vacation' or 'my new job' or 'spring break'". I'm sure that the company just contacts them and offers them pre-selected packages of clothing in their size. Nobody actually buys 100 pieces of clothing at a time for any reason whatsoever, but it's very much the sort of thing that marketing departments would send out as samples.

Tip for trips : if you want to be excited about the trip without shopping, try planning your outfits and the clothes you will pack, with what you already own.
That's what I did this summer: I don't go on vacation every year (let alone several times a year), so a month before, I started remembering which clothes I wanted to wear, looking in my closet, rediscovering items I had forgotten about, planning outfits for any possible weather and activity... I had quite a few lists and felt very good. Eventually, I had put so much thought into it that I have never packed such a small number of clothes. My backpack was super light.

New subscriber here! I used to be a Forever 21 teen (I didn’t know it was fast fashion when I was in high school in ~2010) and shopped at urban outfitters all the time. None of the clothing from that time lasted more than 2 seasons. I now focus on buying a few items a season, if that, and prioritize quality fabrics and only buy for my style, not trends. I appreciate this video and am excited to watch more of your content!

I dont overconsume anything!! Ive embraced a simplistic lifestyle, it makes everything so much easier. but every time I do buy something I need or want I thank God I can afford it because many people cannot.

It’s interesting that the first TikTok was Australian. There was an Australian report recently that said that we consume the most textiles in the world and spend less per item and the average is 56 items new per year. I’m ashamed of my country. The media is suggesting that the government is going to start putting an extra levy on clothing but idk if it’s going to actually happen 😢

I have bought from shein about 3 times over the past few years, one was a holdall bag as I simply didn't have the budget for a new, decent quality one and it's still going strong 🤞🏻

I am only allowed to buy from Shein once a year. I have a very niche aesthetic (going strong for almost 3 years now, not a micro trend) and Shein is helpful for finding some niche items. But I have really strict rules, its not allowed over 50 dollars, once a year only, i search really hard for cotton items if its clothing, and I have to keep the items in my cart for a month before i purchase. I'm working hard to not use it at all anymore

Her friend who is kinda rich made her buy that cloth from her because it didnt fit her and god. that woman can buy better clothes but no she buys shein. also the fabric was horrible i told my mom to never buy anything like this from her because its toxic etc and my poor mom had no idea how could she know.

Like, fast fashion is so wasteful and just points a neon "I'm a horrible person" sign to these dreadful people. And the fact that they likely just toss their old clothing out rather than donating them to people that need the clothing?? Awful. And it's sad that donating clothes to a second-hand store isn't a good, affordable option any more. 🙁

"Viewers want to look for things to want" is soo true. I've been very into beauty community at one point and I did not even realise that I was essentially watching hour-long ads. Once I stopped watching videos about makeup, my interest gradually died. I have only replaced concealer this year, that was my only beauty purchase.

Agree 100% with not shopping specifically for vacations. I want to bring my most comfortable, most reliable, absolute favorite clothes and shoes that make me feel and look my best. Why would I want to risk bringing something that might chafe, rub, fit weird, or be in any way uncomfortable while walking 20,000 steps a day.

I'm so hyped up when you brought up buying different outfits for every day of your vacation! I'm clutching my phone so tightly because this is what im currently experiencing with my friend group!
We decided to go on a short vacation together in a few months and they brought up colour-coordinating so it will look cute in our photos and what not. The problem is, their ideas/suggestions are so specific that it doesn't match with my own aesthetics that I'd be forced to buy new clothes for those few days of vacation! It's so infuriating😂
It's one thing if someone say something 'blue' because at least i can wear my baby blue dress. Nope. It's something specific like 'navy blue blouse/shirt and white jeans'.
I've always been a pastel kind of girl. Has been for almost 11 years now so it's almost impossible for them not to know.
Oh, and yes, nobody has those specific colour and jeans either so everyone has to buy something new. And that's only for day 1😂
At this point, I'm just ready to back out entirely and save my money for something else. Why waste money for something that I'm gonna be wearing once? I may donate the clothes once the vacation is over but I'm not made of money so I'd rather not buy them in the first place😂

I sometimes feel a bit scammed, but i also know that i will get more use out of it then the previous owner, so i feel less bad. tossing it after a few wears is wild, ive had a shirt (thrifted) that ive worn for like 2 years, and it still holds up great. I plan on turning the design into jacket patches when it eventually gives out

  • @Sylvelourie

I feel like the idea of buying new clothes for a vacation isn't always a problem, but it needs to be done thoughtfully. For example, it depends on the kind of trip you are going on. For example, when I went on a cruise to the Bahamas, I got some new stuff - not because I couldn't wear what I already had or anything, but I was from the Midwest and didn't have a lot of clothing that was suitable for the climate. I needed a swimsuit so I could go swimming (I didn't have one at the time). A cover up. A couple dresses - because I needed a slightly more formal one for the dress code at a restaurant on the ship. But I did end up wearing all of them more than once on the trip.
I'm also thinking I will be taking a trip to Costa Rica in the future and that's going to necessitate new clothes, because I will be hiking in the rainforest looking for birds. I don't have the right shoes and clothing to deal with that kind of environment safely and comfortably.
I think responsibility is the most important thing. If you're going to buy new clothes for a trip, do it responsibly. Just a few things at most, but also consider whether you actually need something new for this specific trip. Most of the time you don't.

I understand that shein is bad for the environment, wasteful, and overall non sustainable. It’s a problem for me however because people dont realize that the same type of materials that are on shein are also found in stores. It’s a polyester apocalypse!! Also, since shein is so cheap, it definitely preys on people who have less of a budget. For example, high school/college students. They honestly just want cute clothing without breaking the bank. I think that we should hate on the influencers that have money and still buy shein. They have enough money to buy from brands that use sustainable materials, and yet they make $1000+ shein hauls. For what?? Again, I understand every hate comment that Shein gets. But honestly, i feel like people who have a smaller budget than many just want cute clothing!

As a plus size person, I'll add that as an Asian company, the sizing is extremely different than Western sizing. Significantly smaller! They will list something as 6-7X that is maybe a 22/24 at most (which is a 2X traditionally in US), so it makes sense to me that they show them on non-plus size models because they are barely plus sized items.

overconsumption bad, and maybe hauling influencers do more harm than good, but just to give another perspective…. i watch haul videos to stop myself from buying things (esp when i can’t afford it or dont really need it). Watching a prettier person act like a dress up doll and model some niche aesthetics that I like scratches that brain itch that makes me think “i should get into dark academia” and then I dont buy clothes myself. I get all the pleasure of being a person hauling 100 items without hauling 100 items
i wonder if theres any research or data on that, like how many people react the same way as me. maybe its an age/generation thing? maybe its a cultural thing? maybe its a class thing? I really dont think it’s just me but i dont have any data on it. anybody looking for a PHD thesis?

I bought a few of times in shein, the quality of some pieces are decent, specially hair accesories, certain denim skirts, some chiffon dresses, sweaters (one of them is incredibly durable) and some of them were straight trash: the sizing is inconsistent, then I realize i just can go to a store and look for a better quality item. Even if i dont do massive purchases, I realized buying there is like gambling and not sustainable, then i dont buy items in tjat website in a while.
