  • Jeri Young Ben-Horin, (AZGS Research Scientist) describing the latest addition to the Arizona Broadband Seismic Network operated by the Arizona Geological Survey.
"AZGS added a new seismometer to its existing statewide Arizona Broadband Seismic Station array of 15 broadband seismometers. The new seismic station, situated in the San Francisco Peaks of the Northern Arizona Seismic Belt, replaces an older site whose data was compromised by cultural noise, i.e., automobile traffic, well pumps, and more. With a permit issued by the Coconino National Forest, the station is situated several miles away from any urban development, for now. Many factors go into selecting a seismic site, such as cell coverage for telemetering live data, south and west facing solar exposure to keep the site’s electricity flowing, dig-ability, and of course gaining long-term access.
To build the new site Jeri Y. Ben-Horin (AZGS Earthquake Geologist) and Howard Peavey (AZGS seismic tech) had to schlep in 900 pounds of sand, 600 pounds of cement, and 250 pounds of water, along with a variety of tools and a generator to establish a 6-foot deep borehole to ensure the seismometer is nested in quiet place, into bedrock. It took nearly two weeks to complete the installation." Text by Jeri Y. Ben-Horin.

The theory California would fall into the ocean originated in Nevada so we sing songs about ocean front property in Arizona and say ignorance is bliss or have a happy wife have a happy life.
