Hi, just ran across your reaction, and I agree with you on their talent. They are in fact in their early twenties, but do look a lot younger simply because they are not very tall. They grew up outside of Garut, a city in Indonesia (West Java, I think?). They were raised literally on dirt floors next to rice paddies, and there is a quite fun video of Widi practicing her bass next to her mother who is cooking dinner on a semi-enclosed outdoor kitchen. They learned about metal music through a school teacher or counselor, fell in love with it and went full tilt learning as much as they could. They did encounter resistance from more conservative local religious types, and faced many tribulations due to that, including from their own families. Indeed, I can assure you that they have full paid their dues getting to where they are now. They have gone from strength to strength thanks to their grit and determination to make their dreams come true, and in the past few years they've conquered some of the biggest festivals in Europe and the US. Most recently it was being the bottom of the ticket at Glastonbury, where they basically broke a tonne of firsts: first Indonesian band, first all-Muslim female band, and the list goes on. And of course they absolutely crushed it. Being an older fella, I feel a bit like an older relative watching his young relatives make their way in the world, and they do indeed make my heart explode with pride with every step they take. It's worth checking out just about everything they do. Their originals are fantastic, but they also manage to truly own the covers they do. They sing mainly about social justice and political themes, as well as women's issues. Can't get enough of them also because they evoke, for me, the vibe of the early punk rockers I grew up with. Punk died in about 1988, never to return, at least until I heard the spirit in which VOB voiced their feelings.
