I don’t know if he suffered vocal burnout from singing too much or just pushed too much…but the energy this man brought to all of his singing and the gorgeous natural timbre of his voice have made him such a gem in the opera world. We are lucky for his so many recordings.

I completely agree. I think it's a combination of the things you mentioned. He was one of the most in demand tenors in the world in the early 2000s. He's such a passionate performer that he always pushed a little bit, but to great effect for us as listeners. To me, he's always given 120% to all of his performances and combined with such a busy schedule, the voice was bound to suffer eventually.

And while I am not nearly as scholarly as are many posters here (and I laud you your expertise, so please do not fling-forth the vitriol), still--beginning with Caruso, heard fifty-five years ago, and now others--this little song makes me happy, and--for a few moments, free from care.
