Kathak ❌ Mujra of tawaifs ✅ I mean look at the costume.... As if they performed it wearing this before it got influenced by Mughals and nizams. It's a shame that a tradition which is thousands of years old can't even be represented by what truly it looked like back then in terms of costume. Equally shameful for those dancers and gurus who can't think beyond anarkali or ghaghra for Kathak.
so an entire chunk of history should be erased? understand the ethos and syncretic nature of the dance form, then form arguments. this jingoistic approach never flies with art.
@@AnushkaChandak_Siffkathak Firstly I never said this "entire chunk of history" should be erased. Should have read it properly. What I wish is a representation of Kathak which existed before this "chunk of history". Before the introduction of salami, anarkali and elimination of any reference to hindu gods. It's not just any other dance it's an offering or "sevaa" which the performers did to hindu gods and goddesses, it was always about devotion. But the theme of devotion is transformed into a steamy love affair. Surely this part of history has a special place in your heart despite it being famous for cultural appropriation and elimination of the very heart and soul of the dance, being devotion towards hindu gods. But the result of it is the ignorance of the propounders of Kathak who claim it to be ages old but can't even present elements beyond a certain time frame. Again I repeat Kathak existed before Mujras of tawaifs and let that be given a good share of recognition. This constant appropriation of our traditions be it yoga or Kathak doesn't seem to be enriching when its very essence is eliminated since there's no Christian Yoga or Mughal Kathak. Hijacking age old traditions and eliminating its essence is appropriation and not art. The traditions in Odissi and Bharatanatyam are still alive right from the costume to the central themes in exact form (though the sarees are stitched but it's understood it has always been sarees), so them claiming it to be thousands of years old is a valid claim. But Kathak in this form with its appropriated art shouldn't call itself to be present since antiquity because it simply doesn't. Period.
acha. what then are the jaavalis in bharatnatyam? devotional music? rise above religion a little to see the art form. one emotion or just one single theme cannot entail an entire dance form. dancers today use kathak as a language to express absolutely every shade of emotion and story telling= katha kahe so kathak kahaave. besides, nobody is claiming we are dancing the form that is a thousand years old. we dance the form that has evolved trough different social and political situations. we are dancing the form of the present. art is a living, thriving creature, not a museum piece that has to stay as it used to be a thousand years ago.
