    Quick word to join all the people giving you an award too Duade, I discovered you this year and you transformed my world with your capacity to transmit your passion of photography through the passion, honesty and quality of the topics, videos and photos you shared. I knew I liked photography when we were traveling but I can't wait every day to get a bit of free time in order to go out and play with my camera and apply what I watch or what I trained on. Thank you Duane, have a fantastic Chrismas, we know already what to wish you for 2023 (with health always first of course!) !! A big thank you !

    I just picked up the sigma 150-600 about a month ago and I have to say I've been incredibly impressed with it. Putting it on a camera that's significantly cheaper than it is (canon eos 250d) dramatically improved the quality of the shots I was getting over the kit 75-300mm lens from canon. Went from dealing with a ton of chromatic fringing, soft shots, and poor performance in lower light to having amazingly crisp shots that I would have never been able to get otherwise. My keeper rate went from 20% to 80% in my first session. I'm glad to see it so highly regarded by the community as well.
    I'll say that with a cheaper DSLR from canon I haven't had any of the autofocus issues seen with the mirrorless, in fact I find that it usually autofocuses better and faster, and the IS is a godsend. I've used it for a fair amount of photography at this point, including my first attempt at astrophotography, and I've just been blown away at its performance for the price. Definitely worth looking in to if you're considering getting a telephoto lens, just wish it could be a bit faster.

    That was fun Duade even though I'm a Nikon shooter. I was glad to see the D500 and the Nikkor 200-500 f5.6 made the lists as that is what I use. I did recently add the 70-200 f2.8 with the fluorite lens element to my gear. I know most people say it's to short for wildlife but I had a couple of specific reasons for getting it. On my crop frame body it has a field of view equal to a 300 mm lens. It's used primarily from a blind in my yard so the birds are close. The wide aperture really helps with the heavy shade from all my trees and keeps the ISO down. And I think it will be great for early and late low light conditions for environmental small in frame subjects.

    Watching from the US. I’ve been doing landscape photography for awhile now, and I just recently jumped into wildlife. They are still working for me (although a bit slow) but as you point out, there are so many great options for when I upgrade. I bought a 16-35 f4 this year which will improve my landscape and architecture which is an increasing part of what I do. Awesome video Duade. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this. Though I'm a Canon fanboy, I've been finding the 500mm f4L has been taking it's toll on my arms, shoulders and back (just getting old) . I always shoot handheld as I don't like using a tripod/monopod. For a number of years my second system has been Fujifilm. A few weeks back I purchased the X-T5. This coupled to the Fuji 100-400 f4.5-5.6 is a wonderful alternative. If you are ever up Canberra way I'd be happy to lend you these for a couple of days to try out and review😀 Hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Cheers Zsolt

    • @Duade
      @Duade  Рік тому

      Seth, thank you, yes approaching timid animals is really tough. I have found following animals to be tough once they know you are coming. Often trying to predict where they are going or where they might be and getting there early and waiting helps. It is often a lot of time in the field to learn behaviour and it is not easy. Good luck, Cheers, DUade

    Awesome video Duade, I always love it when a new video from you pops up on my list. I started bird photography a year ago and learned so much from all your videos even though I use a Sony and not a Canon. I use a A7iv with the 70-350mm aps-c lens, it is very light weight which I really like and it still takes great photos. I am looking at a full frame lens but I cannot decide yet between the Sony 100-400 with the 1.4 or the 200-600. I am looking forward to your videos with the 200-600. Such a great channel, thank you for sharing such detailed information thru 2022! I was glad to see you pick the R7 since I bought one lol…however, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those cameras. If I wasn’t already invested in Canon glass I’d probably consider Fujifilm or Sony. Or even Nikon. In fact, I’ve been eyeing that Sony 200-600 as well…Canon really, really needs to open up to third party lenses (I have 2 Tamron and 2 sigma along with my L lenses). Again, thank you for putting out such great content!

    Wishing you all the best in 2023 Duade. I guess that Sony 200-600 is a little foreshadowing for what’s to come in the new year. If there’s one thing that you have proved over and over you can still have great success and enjoyment from all types of camera gear and brands. The gear awards and reviews are useful and fun to watch. You have 100% class and look forward to future episodes - even if you jump to Sony 😉.

    Awesome video Duade. Thanks for all the videos this year they helped me a lot this year. its a shame that canon isnt playing nice with 3rd party lens makers. Id love an tamron rf 50-400 or a sigma 150-600 in rf but looks like my only option is rf 100-500 or keep with my sigma 150-600 ef

    Thanks for another cracking video Duade,
    my first digital camera was my 7Dii which has been great but recently it had to go into the "shop" so I went mad and bought a 5Diii which has blown me away with it's vastly superior low light capability and shallow depth of field (for equivalent field of view) (however the autofocus and burst rate isn't as good as my 7Dii) now I know what people mean about the full frame advantage and I'm about to swap my 7Dii for a 1DX ( I can't wait to play with this beast 😎)
    In terms of lenses my first proper long lens was an EF400mm f/5.6 which I regret selling even though I have an EF100-400 mark ii so I'd like to get another one of these.
    My favourite lens though is my EF400mm f/2.8 (non IS) which is mind blowingly great optically but extremely heavy at 6.5kg.
    My dream set up would be an R3 with the RF600 f/4 but even better would be a Canon version of Nikon's 600 f/4 with builtin T.C
    Cheers
    Noel

      Hi Michael, I suspect they are very similar however the R3 has a much faster readout speed and the bigger battery so likely will drive the lenses that little bit faster. The R62 is no slouch though and I have been very impressed given the cost. Cheers, Duade

    I bought the 400 f5.6 as a used one back in 2013. Also I was the 3rd owner. Still it performs like a champ to me. Moreover I found this type of lens more practical for birding than heavy primes, as a birder need to move around challenging terrains a lot than most other photographers. It's just not possible with those primes.
    I haven't manage to buy a mirrorless yet, but for that I have an eye for the RF 100-400mm. Looks like a very interesting lens for such job.

    I love the introduction of the Canon R7, but the Fuji X-T5 at $1700 is a pretty serious competitor. The X-T5 has a better sensor and better glass (apart from the RF 100-400mm), but the R7 has better autofocus. To me those are the clear front-runners in terms of value.

My first camera was a Canon Powershot SX10, but before long I bought a Canon EOS 1100, my first DSLR, which I used for a long time with a Canon 55-250mm lens. I was thinking of making the switch to mirrorless next year, but will wait for Canon to allow Sigma to release an RF version of the 150-600mm. I love this lens and I'm happy with the photos I take with the 7D mk ii. For now I'm choosing not to upgrade my equipment and I prefer for now travel to see and photograph new species of birds 😃. also loved the Nikon d7200 great for garden birds, but it came to me after i got used to the tiny m4/3, and found it so hard for me to use its big heavy body, i have small hands.
    anyway, will be getting the OM-1 for 2023, can't wait for it, wonder if i have to start saving for the big white, or just stick to my beloved Zuiko 300 mm f4, after all its just a hobby.

    As usual great video! You missed canon 200-400 f4, that also has built in 1.4 tele converter in it. It is weird though why Canon didn’t add that to their primes. I've really only gotten into bird photography in the last few months so I'm keen to step up into a better lens! Duade - for king of the castle, the R3 had 23.8% - higher than the A1 or Z9. Vox Populi!!!
    PS got my R3 last Tuesday (so I am biased). Haven't had a chance to use it in anger yet, let alone set it up. Have been crook with some bug since Sunday morning (did get out Sunday arvo with the 7D II/500mm f4/1.4x TC though and got a Pacific Baza, Sacred Kingfisher and Dollarbird).

    • @Duade
      @Duade  Рік тому +1

      Thanks mate, yes the R5 and R3 were popular in the King of The Castle award but the majority of votes were by Canon users which skews the results. I do love the R3 and think it is the best in hand camera which I am sure you can now vouch for also. Good luck with it, I would love to hear how you get on with it. Congrats on the Baza, I have not got a shot of that bird yet. Cheers, Duade

    • @davepastern
      @davepastern Рік тому

      @@Duade remember though, ~45% of camera sales are by Canon. So, it's always going to be skewered. I do think the Z9 and A1 are better cameras than the R3 though. I think the AF on the A1 is ever so slightlly superior from what I have been able to gather, the Z9 is a match for the R3. And of course, 50mp and 45mp are much better than the "lowly" 24mp of the R3. If I didn't have a large investment in Canon lenses, I would have honestly switched A1 or Z9. Hard to tell which. The A1 has the advarntage of 3rd party lenses, and a smaller body, but that smaller body is also, imho, its weakness.
      If you've handled a 1 series body, you'll love the feel of the R3. We both know how that feels. I'm kinda writing this reply accounting for other users who might be considering moving to a pro body, or switching from Canon to One of the other marques.
      The R3 is way better a camera than I am a photographer and i'm hoping to grow into it.
      That mark 1 500mm f4 EF lens is superb - I am absolutely loving it.
      I can't believe you've not gonna a shot of the Baza yet! I also managed a (not so good) shot of a horsfield's bushlark a week and a half ago. Only had the 1 shot, and wasn't particularly close before it darted off. A real pity. I've found a local pair of Sacred Kingfishers no more than 5 minutes drive from home. Still working on getting close enough to them, but they have been there 3 out of 4 visits, so they are pretty regularl. I hope to get better shots down the track.
