I gotta say, the headphone jack on the dualshock 4 was a genius design choice. It's so incredibly handy to be able to play without annoying others with the noise of games. Especially repetitive shooting noises
Wish they didn't do that half-assed bullshit with the DS4. If you're going to go transparent Sony, do it like u did before! Just like the limited edition 2 TB Pro; it's not fucking hard Sony and would've been easy money
Good video and coverage of the history of Sony's amazing heritage of controllers for Playstation. Did notice tho you failed to mention the addition of the speaker in the Dualshock 4 being another really cool upgrade we got this gen :)
@@MysticRyan Hey buddy I have a question could you tell me if the Dualshock 1 or 2 dpads we're a single piece of sperate buttons? The PS4 and ps5 dpad are terrible for fighting games because if you push the back button but in a up motion characters will actually jump
@@MysticRyan I know it's late but I remind you that you are missing the analog ps2 scph-10520 that did not have vibration I suppose for the same reason that the Sixaxis from ps3 did not have I hope you read it sorry if I do not write well English is not my native language pd: and one more thing the psx control (ps2 multimedia only in japan i belive) also counts or is it separate?
There is one controller I know about that you didn't mention. There were PS2 controllers without "Dualshock 2" on them that lacked rumble functionality, and they were made for the same reasons as the Sixaxis.
Fevos Man these are things you don’t like. I love the light bar I love how it changes color when you die or are in certain situations. And when I’m playing with my nieces they love how everybody gets there certain color. And the touchpad is great it’s one button that serves as 5 buttons in many games. In days gone different swipes pull up either map, skills, missions etc. but to each there own.
Also, you forgot to mention this but Bungie (Developer and publisher of the Destiny franchise) worked with Sony to help design the DualShock 4 yo focus more of First Person Shooters, especially considering that they had a deal with Sony through Activision at the time for exclusive DLC.
I remember when I was a kid and my dad came home from work with a copy of ape escape and the new ps1 controller, probably my favorite video game related memory from back then.
Love the dual shock 4, its biggest flaw is its longevity. I mean I just got one a month ago and I face the same issue I had with the previous one on which the right or left analog sticks shift internally a certain direction without me touching them. Dual shock 3 controllers were much durable sadly
the dual analog controller was sooo fucking good. only the rumble was missing but in my opinion this controller was sooo much better as the dualshock 1 to 3.
I vaguely remember two PS1 controllers that aren't mentioned here: (1) I'm sure I remember seeing an official white "PSone" controller (for the mini-PS1) in GAME UK that didn't have dual analog sticks, and (2) I think the official controller that came with the original PS1 (SCPH-100x) had a "shinier" plastic than the ones with the later SCPH-5xxx models - although I'm not sure whether the controller had a different model number
IMO the transparent ps2 controllers were the very best. Only pad I feel comfortable playing fighting games on. I got a Chinese usb adapter for it off ebay for $4.00 and haven't felt any input lag or anything and use it for all my modern and emulation gaming.
How to make DS5 perfect: 1 Remove touchpad because it was never more than a gimmick in any PS4 games 2 Make the dpad four separate buttons 3 Change the options button back to it's original name
The Dual Analog controller is my go-to for PS1. The longer handles and concave joysticks with no gross rubbery tops makes it way better than the Dualshock imo.
Wow man you after posting so many awesome interesting videos you still come up with brilliant original ideas everyday. Mad respect dude! I rate your channel 69 out of 69 stars!!!
My only issue with the duel shock 4 is how it supports gyro aiming but no too many games support it seems the only way to take advantage of it is to use it on the pc
Gotta give some credit to the dualshock 4, ive only had one through this entire last generation and it is still in great shape. Cant say the same for my ps2/ ps3 controllers.
First time I saw PS1 controllers I thought the dpad has 4 separate buttons. Probably hard to DP in Street Fighter Alpha, little did I know it’s super smooth.
Damn, I've been wanting to make this video myself for years now. You did miss a controller though, There was a PS2 controller in between the DualShock 2 and SIXAXIS controller. It was basically identical to the DualShock 2 but lacked the Rumble feature due to the legal battle they were currently in the middle of. It was also a very light controller. Also Prressure Sensitive buttons were never a thing on the PS3. That was a PS2 Controller exclusive feature. Maybe I should still make a definitive PlayStation Controller History video.
The sixaxis controller was the most innovative controller from sony with it’s motion sensitivity features wich even predates the wii console by 8 day’s 😆👍
Big misstake with the Dualshock 4 controller: Share and Option buttons are not accentuated enough, they are hard to find without looking at the controller
That's the best controller for video gamers, for this age it only needs to split in two and attach to a portable Sony ps5 tablet for pay-to-win free gaming on the go.
Out of the xbox and playstation controller it's a personal preference but I do prefer the feel and just the simple lay out of the playstation controller
Didn’t know that the ps2 buttons were pressure sensitive Didn’t know that the ps4 didn’t have them. While playing my ps4 i thought pressure sensitive buttons were a thing like i could feel it in the triggers
All this time, I thought that the PS4 controllers with the light on the touchpad were some kind of weird version, or whatever, and I just learned that I have the shitty one, whilst the ones that criticized are the new ones. Fuck.
I hated when the rumble was introduced, it put me off so I turned it off when ever I could. I was really looking forward to the boomerang pad & was so pissed off when it didn't happen. Few months later I bought a Madcatz blue boomerang controller when they released one. It broke after a year though. :-(
I know this video is 4 years old but I have question. I have 4 analog ps1 controllers and two of them don’t have rumble support but they were made in china; the third controller acts the same but it’s made in Korea; lastly, the fourth controller has analog and rumble support but it’s made in japan…so does rumble only support Japanese ps1 analog controllers?

The ps4 is very comfortable the ps1 was a hit or miss when it comes to its feel. Then the PS2 is god tier you felt the weight of the controller but the PS3 is the same design but feels lighter and less durable (bought 3 of them in the past year due to analog problem or button feeling worn out so quickly)
They actually did. They were used for gran turismo, MGS Collection and the mgs4. I'm guess they were mostly included for playstation 2 compatibility as very few ps3 games used them.
@@blu3ntv all dualshocks 3 have pressure sensitive buttons and membrane under the buttons. It's because it was built into the circuit boards not the actual buttons. The membrane is also in ps2 controllers.

You can always use a Switch Pro Controller. The Buttons on those are a lot more clearer than than the ones on The Joy Cons and is more on par with the size of The PS4 and XBOne Controllers.
