  • Airplane Mode is something you may’ve spotted in the iPhone's Control Center, but what exactly is it? And when should it be used? Well, Airplane Mode addresses a problem caused by the growing popularity of modern electronics. The feature isn’t limited to iPhone. It’s also found on Android phones, tablets, smartwatches, eReaders, and even notebooks.

Today's modern airplanes are no longer dangerous, because the technology has been improved. A pilot once told me that he even forgot to turn off his cell phone in the cockpit and didn't notice anything. It's more a relic of the past. Nice video!

That the pilot did forget to turn on Airplane Mode and it didn't disturb the pilot(s), (with their radio signals etc...), *could* just be a fluke!

it actually is! Newest Boeing planes like Boeing 787 have problem with 5Gmm wave signal. It also interrupts functioning of ILS and radio altimeter so in US where this problem accured cell towers near airports were turned off and banned to use. Now FAA investigates the problem. The main issue is that the device will ramp up signal power to connect to a cell tower. If multiple devices were to boost their signal at once, it leads to interference on the pilot's radio. This isn't dangerous as long as the interference isn't too strong. Yet, if every passenger were to forget airplane mode, it could cause some trouble for communications

Actually airplane mode enforces a Federal Communications Commission rule for airplane mode to prevent interference to cellular towers. Your cell phone can jam up many cellular sites on the ground at one time. With nearly no obstructions the signal is free to travel many times farther than if at ground level. If you do a search for this you will find many articles.
You forgot to mention that airplane mode will save your battery, if it cannot connect to a cell site it will keep searching for a signal.

I’ll save you some time waiting lol
1: a lot of legal hoops apple has to jump through in order to make the service available, blame India not apple lol
2: iPhones became rectangular to allow more space to accommodate more internal upgrades, such as the bigger cameras, batteries and 5G antenna, and a thicker frame provides more rigidity
3: I wouldn’t call the sound system underrated lol they’re speakers are some of the best in the game, and as for the back tap it’s not a well known feature nor do people really use it, personally I turned it off because just setting your phone on a table can trigger the back taps
4: it’s one of those design choices that only apple would make, their cameras have always been in the middle, there also really isn’t any benefit to having a camera in the middle or the sides of the display so again, they did it to make their phone stand out
5: thinnest phone would probably be the iPhone 6-8 and thickest would be between the OG iPhone and the newer rectangular ones lol

This answer is part correct. Yeah, it used to be 20 or so years ago that RF interference was a concern with electronics. However, given that cell phones and aircraft radio now have their own standardized bands, and given that modern aviation electronics resist interference, the reasoning for Airplane or Flight mode has changed from "let's stop interference with the control systems" to "let's stop interference with other passengers", namely to keep the cabin quiet. In fact, the rules have changed a bit so that only phone calls are not allowed, and some flights even let you use mobile data at 35000 ft. Today it is not much about RF as it is about the audible noise.

A lot of the technologies have improved as well, from transmitting digital radio signals instead of analog to having these signals with error correction built in. Each of these add resiliency to computers, including those onboard aircraft. Radio noise is not the only thing computers have to deal with, we also have to handle cosmic rays and the environment. With each possible source of interference, a solution that adds resilience has been or will be found.

Mobile data uses the same frequency bands as phone calls, but not the same frequency bands as plane radio. The equipment of the 1990s was not resilient in the face of noise. Now modern aviation electronics (and, to a broader degree, almost all consumer electronics) are able to detect and properly function around interference. The reality is that there have been no plane crashes directly linked to cellular use or consumer electronics. There are dedicated signalling bands that are used by cellular (406-512 MHz) and other mobile devices and there are dedicated signalling bands used in aviation (108-136 MHz), and never do the two mix. It's a great way to disconnect, disable distractions, and preserve battery massively.

Maybe phone companies and aircraft manufacturer can develop a protocol to automatically switch on the airplane mode when a certain signal was switched on by the pilot.

No it’s not essential since your mobile toggle is right next to it. Its redundant. It’s basically just there for simplicity sake since it’s the same name and icon no matter what phone manufacturer you have.

what wasn't explained in the video and what airplane mode could actually practically be used for:
it turns off all wireless modems - cellular/wifi/bluetooth, though most smartphones still allow wifi and bt to be turned back on, so it's realistically a switch for the cellular (and cellular data) modem.
