A New Understanding: The Science of Psilocybin (2019) [Full Documentary]

  • A New Understanding explores the treatment of end-of-life anxiety in terminally ill cancer patients using psilocybin, a psychoactive compound found in some mushrooms, to facilitate deeply spiritual experiences. The documentary explores the confluence of science and spirituality in the first psychedelic research studies since the 1970s with terminally ill patients.
As a society we devote a great deal of attention to treating cancer, but very little to treating the human being who is dying of cancer. The recent resurgence of psychedelic research is once again revealing the power of compounds like psilocybin to profoundly alter our understanding of both life and death. Through the eyes of patients, their loved ones, therapists, and researchers, A New Understanding examines the use of psilocybin in a controlled setting to reduce psychospiritual anxiety, depression, and physical pain.
The treatment aims to help the patient understand that a 'good' death is possible, and to help the patient's family deal well with the dying process. A New Understanding shows patients and their families coming to terms with dying through the skillful treatment of the whole human being. If we can learn to work more skillfully with dying, we will also learn to take better care of life.

Psilocybin mushrooms were the only thing that got me out of my suicidal depression, I also saw a red energy exiting my body which I can’t explain. I had inflammatory bowl disease which disappeared after the trip. There’s a lot more to psychedelics then we realise. But I owe my life to that one profound experience, afterwards I felt like I just had 100 years of therapy and released all the emotional shit locked up in my body from the past. They really should be doing these sessions out in nature, it’s so much more powerful... get these people out of a indoor hospital like environment & out into the powerful healing energy from nature.

Bless you for sharing your story brother, I am glad to hear you were healed. psilocybin completely changed my life and got me off meth about 3 years ago. You are absolutely correct that they are to be done outside with the healing energy from nature. You don't get anywhere near the full potential of a trip if you're inside confined within 4 walls. I think being around nature really drills into you the interconnectedness of all nature and how you are one with nature and the universe itself, not some separate extremely individual entity. How much did you take? Just curious, my first trip were shrooms I picked directly off a grave, it was a very spiritual experience in which i felt i connected with that man and received his lifetime of wisdom and quite possibly some of his ancestors too. At the beginning of this video when they spoke about the geometrical patterns and not just seeing the colors but actually being in them, that was exactly what my trip was like. I was flying through these colourful geometric patterns and at the same time they were flying through me, it was so supernatural. The next mushroom season after that, I tripped too often and my trips weren't as good; I find the more time inbetween your trips the more profound and insightful they will be. If you use them too often you're abusing them and thus they will abuse you back. Psychedelics need to be legalized worldwide, keeping them illegal is a war against nature. Here in NZ the councils spray shrooms with fungicide, which causes far more damage to the planet as a whole than some spiritual people trying to travel within using sacred medicine. I hope all is well, peace love and freedom be with you!!!

I thought i was the only one who experienced this mysterious red energy.
As someone who suffer(ed) from Pure O OCD - i visualized multiple red dots that resembled blood (an archetype of a guilty conscious, as i suffered from intrusive thoughts) that would appear and then disappear. Cant really explain it either but it was like it was cleansing me.
This experience changed my life. The thing was, before i even took the miraculous medicine , i didnt even realize i had OCD. I thought i was just a horrible person due to these intrusive thoughts we cant control.
It wasnt until it broke me out of my shackles that kept me depressed and my ocd reminding me to kill myself every 5 seconds, that It reminded me that im in control and that my destiny is not decided by anything else but me.
This is when i quit smoking weed (15+ year daily heavy smoker, weed increased my anxiety), and started exercising , eating healthy, and started to go to therapy for the first time in my adult life. (Which is when i realized i had this disorder) Pretty much taking back control of my life.
The most amazing thing was , for the next 2 months after the experience, my ocd symptoms decreased dramatically, and i was able to smile genuinely for the first time in ages!
Fortunately now, with the help of cognitive behavioral therapy techniques i am able to control my ocd, not the other way around.
Honestly, without that experience breaking me out of my mental shackles,
Id still be doing drugs, thinking of killing myself obsessively, and socially isolate myself due to severe anxiety. And i probably wouldnt have gone to therapy which allowed me to understand myself.
Ive only taken it that 1 time, and honestly that's all i ever needed to save my life.
Its so frustrating how this amazing organism can be classified as having no medicinal benefit , which has the potential to SAVE LIVES.

When I was in my late teens, my mother died, after struggling with cancer for years. Taking Psi slowed things down. When I talked her into smoking cannabis, she gained 30 lbs. Psilocybin grew a few blocks from my house. After having a botanist teach us how to identify them, we'd go shroom hunting, We'd all have big bags of them, dry them out and find creative ways to combine different strains. She lived much longer than anyone thought. We made wonderful recipes with them. The flavor was subtle but distinct.

That's what Aldous Huxley was suggesting in his last novel, Island. It's about this utopian society isolated from the rest of the world where people practice Buddhism and take a medicine (psilocybin mushrooms) for spiritual enlightment. The mushrooms are first taken as part of an initiation ritual for the young person, a sort of coming-of-age. Boys and girls at 12 years old start the all-day ritual by mountain climbing in groups to experience the fragility of life by engaging in dangerous physical activity. The day ends with the young initiates taking the mushrooms so that they may know the full range of human consciousness through mystical experience.
The "Moksha Medicine" is seldom used yet it's a key part of the culture on Pala Island.

You couldn't possibly have been in any way something imperfect.
You're mistaking yourself for an object, you're believing the story you're telling yourself.
You are that which is aware of objects, of stories (thinking).
Consciousness is just what it is, and it's all that is, so just rest as that. 💜

The Upanishads has, being the summation of the Veda, are from…found from over a long period of time. Beginning perhaps as early as 800 BC. Some of the Upanishads are much much later than that. And the basic position of the Upanishads is that the Self is the one and only reality without a second-that all this universe is finally Brahman-and appears to be a multiplicity of different things and different events only by reason of Maya, which is illusion, magic, art, creative power. So then it is basic to the Vedanta that Brahman-this intangible non-objective ground of everything that exists-is identical with the ground of you. And this is put in the formula: tat tvam asi. T-A-T, tat, same as our word ‘that’; tvam, T-V-A-M, same as the Latin tuus-thou; asi-art. We should translate that into a modern American idiom as “You’re it.”
This, of course, is a doctrine which is very difficult for those brought up in the Judeo-Christian traditions to accept because it is fundamental to Christian and Jewish theology that whatever you are, you are surely not the Lord God. And Christians feel about the Hindu doctrine-that we are all fundamentally masks of God-that it’s pantheism, and that’s a dirty word in Christian theological circles because of the feeling that if everything is God, then all moral standards are blown to hell; because it means that everything is as good as everything else; everything that happens is really God and this must include the good things and the bad things. And that seems to them a very dangerous idea. Actually all religious doctrines contain very very dangerous ideas.
However, we won’t worry about that for the moment because what the Hindu means by God when he says Brahman is not at all the same thing as a Jew means by the Lord Adonai; because the Jew and the Christian means ‘the boss’ to whom divine honors are due as above all others. The Hindu, on the other hand, does not mean ‘the boss.’ He doesn’t mean the king, the Lord, the political ruler of the universe. He means the inmost energy, which, as it were, dances this whole universe, without, as it were, the idea of authority, of governing some intractable element that resists his or its power.
So if a Christian, or a person in a Christian culture, announces that he has discovered that he is God, we put him in the loony bin, because it is unfashionable to burn people for heresy anymore. But in India if you announce that you’re the Lord God, they say “Well, of course. How nice that you found out,” because everybody is. -Alan Watts

I was brought up christian, and even did mission work and was a youth pastor at one time. I had a "samadhi" experience on just 3g of golden teacher mushrooms. I experienced non-duality, and became one with god - understanding we are all god. That same day, I researched what I had experienced, and came across the teachings of swami Sarvapriyananda. I immediately understood everything he was teaching on advaita vedanta (non-dual vedanta). I am not into religion of any sorts, but appreciate the wisdom offered by Hindu, Christian and other faiths. The problem is, people feel the need to "bottle" their mystical experience and turn it into a commodity for the masses. Just do shrooms and enjoy what they have to teach us and we will all come to the same conclusions in the end. Btw, I have started re-reading the gospels of Jesus with a new perspective. He walked in samadhi...

I never really dealt with depression but for a while i felt like a piece was missing, i wasnt as happy as i could be ans my anxiety got in the way of a lot of things. But since microdosing, my anxiety is almost non existent, i feel more energetic, creative, better sense of well being and just overall feel amazing. Im even performing better at my job. Microdosing Psylocybin is gonna be the next big thing and i cant wait for it to be more medically accessible becuse ik it can help so many people.

For me, mushrooms are very confusing. I've done them numerous times and I do love them, but I never got specific messages or even visions. It's always usually the same. About 20 minutes after drinking the tea, I hear a shout. It is very native American in nature. Then comes this explosion of colors. This then morphs into this enormous space that Im in that is within me. It is filled with this moving aztec designs and candy in celephane wrappers. These candies and shapes shift and wiggle and make these squeaking and almost giggling noises. There was one time that I was tripping extremely hard and suddenly felt the presence of Jesus Christ. I began thanking him over and over for the experience I was having.
