- The reality of working in tech is not what they make it out to be.
And there are many harsh downsides to being a professional coder that almost no one ever tells you that you need to be aware of before you embark on your journey of learning to code.
All of these reasons actually led me to quit my own job as a software engineer, and I’ll tell you exactly what was the main reason for me.

i see that all this decieving things are sometimes not true and i think its good to be a developer or software engineer and gain more money , I am a professional chef with 20 years experience working in London and comparing the salary of working for hospitality and being a software engineer is a HUGGGGEEEEEEE DIFFERENCE , thats why im pursuing a career to be a developer next year after i finish my bootcamp
,I know about taxes and other expenses that you have to pay like rent or food or other stuff but depends on what city you live and how you control your expenses and about socisl life i have my girlfriend soon to be my wife and family and friends and thats all i need for being social but most important is the MONEY and not other stuff my opinion

All I hear is insane salaries from friends back in London or in the US. But I enjoy my life so much more than them so your videos save me from that nagging doubt in my mind that I'm massively underpaid

If you want to earn much money in Europe , you should learn cobol and mainframes, because in the banking and finance sector much software is on legacy languages like cobol. The finance sector pays very good and there less people who can do the job.

Wait, its not always the option to choose to work remotely you say? One of the main reason i wanna become a developer is that I wanted to work remotely. I'll be disappointed if its not standardized as a choice by now.
Of course it's not and it never will be, for at least 3 reasons:
▪working in real life in a physical office can really help solving problems faster (when the right process is in place). Since companies are all about efficiency, they will prefer this way;
▪companies want to keep control over their employees, often for irrational reasons (like the employees won't do anything);
▪many people can't work remote all the time because it's really not easy, you need to be *very* self disciplined. And it's worse if you live alone because you will tend to stay inside seeing nobody and at some point you'll feel depressed and your body will age fast due to the lack of exercise. Some people like living like this but most people realized during Covid that full time remote was definitely not for them.
As an employee, you'll have to do what your company tells you to do, and nowadays (2024) they want their employees back into the office. Full time remote was an exception during Covid because the companies didn't have much leverage on their software developers, but I never believed it would become the rule and reality shows us that we are kind of back to the old situation. Today software developers often have 2 to 3 days of remote work per week max, when they are lucky. But full time remote as an employee? Good luck finding that.
If the number 1 reason you want to get into software engineering is money, you should go and do something else. Not because it doesn’t pay well, but because you need more than just the drive of a big paycheck to succeed in this field.
So what other fields should one go into if one's only drive is money?

Business owner is indeed making more money mostly, no one can deny.
Honestly, it sounds like you're doing alright. You've moved on from early-career dog work to something more engaging, something more typical for developers transitioning to mid-career.
dumb, you can easily live just outside of sf for a fraction of that. the more expensive places are like 2200 for a one bedroom. you can get way less than that in redwood city or something like that. easily pocket 30000-50000 a year.
