Thank you for the overview! Would love to see some real world testing of heavy projects with a bit of Fusion 👀👀 strongly considering the same M4 Max package as you chose, I do a bit of animation, effects, 3D text and tracking in Fusion, so that's the only point where I'm doubting if the mac can handle it
If Apple would Come to their scences about UPGRADEability namely MEMORY/STORAGE first then GPU/CPU they'ed have far more than the 6% market share of PC's Closer to 50% when it comes to Video editing anyway.
Yes, good point. I didn't mention this model as it's only available as 14" and I was focusing more on 16" MBP. But it's a very good point - if you don't need M4 Max or you want portability, then "base" M4 Pro 14" (12 CPU, 16 GPU, 24GB RAM) is a brilliant option.
@@outinbc Hold on you said at one point in the video that you need 1.5GB per core and then gave the impression the GPU cores count. As this is shared RAM in a Mac that kinda makes sense. So can you clarify please as if so you need 69GB on a Max M4 Max not 24. If go for the PRO 14 core you will need 51GB according to my maths or math if American.
You should aim for at least 1.5GB or RAM per GPU core (CPU cores don't matter). So "base" M4 Max (14 CPU, 32 GPU) would need at least 48GB RAM (32*1.5)for optimal performance (but this model comes with 36GB only). Top of the range M4 Max (16 CPU, 40 GPU) needs at least 60GB RAM (40*1.5), hence why I went for 64GB option. "Base" M4 Pro (12 CPU, 16 GPU) needs at least 24GB RAM (24*1.5) - that's the one I mentioned in the comment above. And M4 Pro (14 CPU, 20 GPU) needs at least 30GB RAM (20*1.5) but it can be only configured with either 24GB or 48GB, so in this case, I would go for 48GB (this is the configuration I also mentioned in the video). Hope this makes sense :)
Haha for sure. When they've done the tests last year (the ones on Blackmagic forum), they used M2 Ultra with 76 GPU cores and it was using around 100GB RAM when running DaVinci (which is actually slightly less than 1.5GB per core) so I can imagine that M4 Ultra will need 128GB+ to get the most out of it... that's gonna be pricey ;)
That's another Problem with all Laptops. Screen realistate far too small. When the F%^K are they going to make a 21" or even 27" screen Laptop. I edit from my Recliner and my 50" UHDTV seems too small for some thing in Davinci. I thinl I'll start Using a Projector for a 130" Screen.

Very informative! Thank you!
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful :)

I couldn't agree more with you on this. Their ssd/ram pricing does not make any sense in 2024.
I have M1 Max 32gpu and 64gb ram. Guess I got the perfect setup.
Yep :) I'm sure it's still going strong after 3-4 years :)
24gb is 1.5 time 16gb gpu core count.

@@outinbc Thanks for the clarity. The M4 Ultra will need a lot of RAM then.
