- This is our 1986 Winnebago LeSharo that has been repowered with a 4BT Cummins Diesel engine and made into rear wheel drive. We made some minor improvement to the interior and storage and I wanted to give an overall tour for everyone to see.
I have an 89 LeSharo that I'm restoring. Your video gave me some good ideas for mine. Thank you 😊
I thought I was the only one who did dumb things like this. I dismantled a semi truck and put the drivetrain including 13 speed transmission in my motorhome. Well done.
Well.... I bought an 84 Lesharo for $400.00. The owner was restoring it and had just put 4 new tires, new battery, and two new AGM deep cycle batteries in. The seats were all taken out and had brand new upholstery all wrapped in plastic. figured I got my money back right there. The diesel engine was torn apart and worthless. The steering wheel didn't even turn the wheels. I put it in my gym. I started tearing the rest of the dated interior out and realized these were made for short people. I'm 6'5". So I took the roof off at the aluminum half round. I cut the metal over the cab portion off. I was surprised to see the roof was so flimsy, thin wood, 1" foam, thin aluminum. I then cut the front end off and dropped and discarded the diesel tank. I bought a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan with 58K from Co part for $950.00. I carefully disassmbled the interior and labled the wiring harness and put it in front seat. took out the gas tank disconnected fuel lines, cut off exhaust just under the manifold and disconnected from rear. disconnected the rear a.c., cut brake lines. Then cut the front off and bolted, welded them together. They matched up awesome. I raised the metal roof and engineered better support, welded in the patch panels. for the main roof I used a 1 off urethane foam and ribs fiberglass technique. super strong. I hate all the stuff hanging off RVs. I sold the Catalina awning on CL for $200.00. I didn't want AC on the roof, I also needed it a foot longer on the interior and I wanted the AC concealed in the back, so, I extended the back 30". I built a modern fiberglass cap for the rear with a door that opens revealing 2 ft of storage for chairs, generator, AC. etc. My back was super flimsy as well. The sidewalls, door and steel bottom are rock solid. I had absolutely no rust anywhere. On the interior I put the kitchen behind the drivers seat to the right of the bathroom. The bathroom was a great idea, just poorly executed. way too narrow, at least for me. I rebuilt the walls using better stainless, slides, took out the wardrobe and widened the bathroom shower to 34". To the left of the bathroom I built new kitchen table benches with the angled backs on hinges 34" wide that flip up to bunk beds. I used the extra foot interior and part of the wardrobe. They are 70" long. Accross from that and to the left of the door as you are walking in is the other kitchen bench that is 80" long that makes bunks the same way. In the end of the bench I put a hidden flat screen tv that retracts into the side with a, 12v linear actuator. Now I just need to finish body work, and paint the entire vehicle. This started as a rally bus for my 14 yr old hoopster to go to tourneys. can't wait to get it on the road. test weight to power, rigidity etc. I'll probably do the upgrade you did to rear suspension or airbags as I have added weight.
Michael Zuro that sounds amazing. I'll give you trip ole what you paid for it.
Show us a demo walk through * Please
Wow! That's impressive. I wish you would post a picture or a video walk-through of the finished product.
sounds like a waste of time ,yet whatever floats yer boat ?
I have updated this alot since then. I have put in a roof AC and got rid of the weird back AC setup I did.
Do you still have this, how's it working for you
Roller actually works REALLY WELL. I have done a lot of scaffolding equipment at work like that and it comes out beautiful. Really glossy after the second coat. Sometimes I do 3 coats.
good job. I'm looking for all inspriration right now. I'm the middle of a project myself.
+Michael Zuro , I can say it was a great journey and still developing engineer feat. Everything work well, just tweaking heating, etc. If you are mechanically driven you can find solutions for anything. Given the heavy duty nature of this vehicle I would have considered a solid axle option which would have jacked it up further. What kind of vehicle are you working on? Ken
Real Nice and it looks functional and FUN !
Nice but how the heck does the air-conditioner vent out the back when you have a storage box on there
We had a fan on the outside of the extension truck we put on there but it just never cooled sufficiently. We fill that opening and put a roof AC on top. Much better, even cools the front seat while driving if we run the generator. I should have never made that AC setup on the floor, trying to be cheap, it never cooled sufficiently.
Nice paint job!!!
Nice job. looks great.
Thanks. bout 12 cans of paint and several paint stencils from North Carolina.
Seen a motor week review on an 83 model basically identical or close to.
Amazing similarity with the Rialta QD
Can those seats behind the driver / passenger seats be removed easy? I'm thinking about buying one but don't like the extra seats there.
They have four bolts below the seat's compartment area. Once Unbolted they lift right up. The seats are rather square and large as they come out.
I'm a 62 y/o single female with a little dachshund as a companion. I love your LeSharo and what you have done with it. Would you mind giving a ballpark figure of how much you have invested in it? I saw one for sale on Ebay for $4400, but I'm sure it would need a good bit of work. Also...where did you find your RV? Was it online? I live in GA, but my only daughter lives in Colorado and is expecting a baby this fall. I would like to find an economical way to travel out there (and also do some dry camping). Thank-you for the videos and information you've shared!
About 5K, maybe less, but I bought things that could have been sourced more easily. Alot of sweat equity. The 4BT motor is exceptionally extreme ($2,000) because I wanted that particular Diesel. I could have used a 4.3 chevy engine for less than $750.00. The rear axle could have been sourced from junk yards and saved $1,000. If I had just shifted the whole body to a rolling F250 chassis I could have built it for around $2,500 ready to go. It would be jacked up even higher but would be a solid and reliable vehicle to tow a small car even.
I am very mechanically incline a spend 4-5K to report it. I bought for less thank 1k with blown smaller engine. We have about 12k mikes on current setup. You could consider one of the nice cargo vans to make your own RV and make it very much your own. A small cargo style van can quickly bet drip with a bed, small kitchen, even simple bathroom facilities. Google has many who have done this.
So what engine and trans did you use. Cooling? Brakes ?
Cummins 4BT 3.9 with Ford F-250 5 speed. I got a custom radiator and the brakes use a Ford Crown Vic front suspension with disk front and drum back. Brake booster vacuum was connected to a belt driven pump but is now electric vacuum pump that works very well.
Nice looking interior. :)
I just bought a 1990 Phasar!!
Awesome. You will learn a little about mechanics to keep this thing on the road.
Awww you put a cummins in a lesharo and didn't even start if for the video :(
I probably could have. I made a few other videos and one with a walk around that you can hear it. Not a quiet motor for sure.
