Someone Great is one of the songs I like best from LCD Soundsystems 2007 top list album Sound of Silver. I made a video for it in school, with a buddie, and I though someone would be interested to seeing it.
I hope I don't violate any rules or restrictions through uploading this. If I do, send me a PM and I'll remove the video or something. But mainly, see this as my humble tribute to the amazing group LCD Soundsystem! Buy their CD!
The video is recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, spring 2008.
Opinions about the vid:
"You know those feelings you get sometimes that can't be summed up with words, but that, every once in a while, get captured by the right song? Here ya go. And if that last sentence was a little cheesy, then just wait til you get a load of the melodramatic Swedish fan video."

Probably the best 240p quality video on UA-cam
Can we take a moment to appreciate 98% of people In these comments are sharing some of their saddest moments all because this beautiful song makes us all think the same thing. One of my best friends passed away two days ago and the tears haven’t stopped. It keeps coming until the day it stops.
I used to listen to this song whenever I was heartbroken, thinking of my love being the 'someone great' that I lost. But now I know, that what I ultimately lost, was myself. I am that someone great, and you are your own someone great ❤️
I hope you're all okay!
Good way to see it!
Not a day goes by i dont think of my best friend Jamie who i lost close to 10 years ago when we were in high school today . he killed himself one night because of complications with a medication . i woke up the next morning to my mother screaming into the telephone . i always shudder when a phone rings in the morning because of that moment they called to tell me he was gone . he really was my best friend, and someone great . I had a dream about him the other night, we were adults, he was my age, i am now 24. i wonder what he would be like, now . anyway, this song caught me in that feeling . i think about him everyday and now i have a song to remind me even more of his lasting memory . thanks -- nicholas .
Started crying, massive respect for you staying strong man
Nice words sir, your friend would be proud of you 🤗
Holy shit man. That made me tear up. I'm sure he was a great dude
It"s so hard to loose someone ,we care about. So sad
SCREAM this SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That awkward moment when a school project captures the spirit of a song better than the song’s official music video.
These kids really did the song so much justice. ❤
My son's song. RIP Ally forever 17 xxxx
Reminds me of my aunt. She was a heroin addict and overdosed back in 2015. When my grandmother called that morning and told us she had passed we were shocked even though we saw it coming, it’s true that nothing can prepare you for it. She was truly amazing person and I don’t go a day without thinking about her.
My favorite part is that rhythm, that Kraftwerk-ish "tik-a-tik-a-tik-a-tik-a-tik-a-tik-a-tik-a-tik", gets in my head and stays for a long time
This is by far one of the most depressing, disturbing yet utterly beautiful pieces i have ever heard
Anna Seidl no idea what your talking about. The key boards.
Darren Martin the lyrics dude.
The lyrics are raw, honest feelings and thoughts, as we've all had, after the end of a romantic relationship. Yet, life must go on. We enter into new relationships, but the past is never quite forgotten. Nor should it be. We all have 'pasts'.... patchworks of prior relationships...some that were stronger than others... regrets in some instances... the right decision to end in others... Only an immature person would 'demand' that their current partner cut off all ties with former loves. No man is an island, or just a 'table for two'. ;-) Life and relationships are complicated, yet, beautiful, even with heartache in the equation.
@@Lisa_Evers this is about the death of his therapist. "You're smaller than my wife remembered" pretty much excludes the idea of this song being about the end of a romantic relationship. A lot of other indicators show that this song is about death but I think the line I cited shows it pretty well on its own
I wake up and the phone is ringing
Surprised, as it's early
...
To tell the truth I saw it coming
The way you were breathing
yeah: I'd say it's about someone dead
Such a special song, the bass melody had a downward trend, kind of represents life and a continuous downward spiral until death. But laid on top of that is the xylophone which follows the vocal melody and is quite positive. Then you have the happy synth melody, like the thoughts we have everyday about life and our ability to stay positive even though we all die and have to endure suffering and hardship. So many emotions in the lyrics, talking about priorities in everyday life, things to do, the relentless work, and then in the end it makes you think if it was all for anything. You can learn a lot by mourning someones loss.
yes to everything
True x
It's an odd but beautiful mix of happiness, sadness, desperate, hopeful, inner peace and excitement.
RIP Trevor Moore. The world will keep spinning without you, but honestly it shouldn't
Reminds me of a girl that i was in love with in high school. she showed me this song our junior year.we graduated in 2009. I hope you're well, Alison. I've still never met a girl as amazing and as special as you. xox
How amazing would it be if she somehow saw this?
Attila so what if she is? That's life. You sound like an angry child who never knew love.
Contact her!!
camas77721 i love this comment, couldnt tell you why exactly

I don't make 'top lists' of bands/songs (because it's pointless and I'm not a character in High Fidelity) but I know that if I was to, this song would be somewhere very high up on such a list. It's fun, sad, beautiful, suspenseful, and magical all at the same time: a masterpiece. I'm so grateful that there are talented musicians and creators alive that can produce such amazing music which evokes myriad of emotions and feelings. I hope everyone reading this is having a good day, but if you're not, I hope this song can give you 6 minutes of respite.
Sammy Smash those are Nice words, kind person
It is a masterpiece....an opus of sorts.
im sure you understand that other people might feel a myriad of other emotions and feelings towards other types of music than the type that you rate as amazing music.
however we do like this too, but just wana promote understanding and non exclusion
I totally agree
This song is absolutely INCREDIBLE!! Every aspect of of every beat is amazing I could listen to the instrumental quite happily for the rest of my life .......and then the saddest and most perfect lyrics interrupt......!!
can't believe it took me so long to hear this song... quickly becoming one of my all time favourites.
same here liliac w-i-n-e :)
I found it fifteen minutes ago. I'm so glad that happened.
this song would probably be on my list of absolute favorite pieces of music of any genre from the past decade
This is my first time hearing it, or even of the group. :)
Me, too. It’s one of my favorites of any genre.
How fucking good is this. Superb
Here in 2022 and this video is still such a relatable thing Jack, well done
this must be the most famous video shot for a school project, lol

I've seen that anyone has posted the lyrics yet. there it go:
I wish that we could talk about it
But there, that's the problem
With someone new I couldn't start it
Too late, for beginnings
The little things that made me nervous
Are gone, in a moment
I miss the way we used to argue
Locked, in your basement
I wake up and the phone is ringing
Surprised, as it's early
And that should be the perfect warning
That something's a problem
To tell the truth I saw it coming
The way you were breathing
But nothing can prepare you for it
The voice on the other end
The worst is all the lovely weather
I'm stunned, it's not raining
The coffee isn't even bitter
Because, what's the difference?
There's all the work that needs to be done
It's late, for revision
There's all the time and all the planning
And songs, to be finished
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
Till the day it stops
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
Till the day it stops
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
And it keeps coming
Till the day it stops
I wish that we could talk about it
But there, that's the problem
With someone new I could have started
Too late for beginnings
You're smaller than my wife imagined
Surprised, you were human
There shouldn't be this ring of silence
But what are the options?
When someone great is gone
When someone great is gone
When someone great is gone
When someone great is gone
When someone great is gone
When someone great is gone
When someone great is gone
When someone great is gone
We're safe, for the moment
Saved for the moment
Laura Roldán thanks
Laura Roldán thank you.
Thank you so so so very much! My boyfriend and I had a blast singing it together. 👽
Thanks! ILY.
Brilliant
"I wish that we can talk about it but there lays the problem" Miss you Little brother !
Mi amigo se derrapó en una curva en la carretera hace 4 años lo extraño muchísimo, a veces me meto al único video de youtube que subió y solo se escucha su voz, aún así es de lo más bonito...
En que dimensión estás?
Fuuuck I haven’t listened to this song in years and it’s genuinely one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard.
Sent here through a tribute to the dearly departed Ron Miner, aka DJ Indiana Jones. May his memory live on forever! GOD heal the hearts who mourn him! #TEARS
always makes me reminisce about an old friend, hope you’re well joshua!
Perfect video for this track, love the finger taps 💜
I was listening to this the other day, thinking about all the good people that have come and gone in my life, and now I have just found out my favourite uncle has died.
Life is short so try and make it sweet x
Reminds me of my son, old Skool always comes back❤️
My Grandmother died a few weeks after I first heard this track. I will always think about her when I listen to it.
I love this song and the person that showed it to me.
A fantastic song, plus an amazing video journeying through the city and viewing it from a real perspective! Great work!
Long life to LCD Soundsystem
James Murphy wrote this song when his therapist passed away
@Leonardo Daniel Romero Alvarado www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/lcd-soundsystems-sound-of-silver-10-things-you-didnt-know-110495/ He dedicated the album to his therapist, but he thinks it would be a waste to prescribe a single meaning to the song.
@@myopicmanatee6432 I mean yeah, like any piece of art
@@WiloPolis03 I agree. My first reply looks as if I am trying to correct someone like a know it all. I do not remember exactly, but I think I was genuinely trying to answer a question that has since disappeared. At least that is what I am telling myself.
does anyone remember the video where it was all black silhouettes of the guy and chick? It seems to have disappeared but it was amazing and I hope it shows up again (whomever made it) - If you haven't seen it, you missed out, if you have, you know what Im talking about. It was brilliant and did justice to the song.
Guys! I did some digging: it's still there. Just go to Parlophone (youtube channel) & scroll down, you should find it there. Good Luck.
Just watched it...yup, its back
(for awhile it kept saying "not available in your country)
i can understand, especially late last year (+ also this spring) as many copyright issues with the UA-cam Inc. were resolved "for the time being" (*safe for the moment* really sums it up)
I thought this fan vid was the real one and I'm sad it ain't! Really, really good.
Its been deleted again fuck, I would love to see it.
One of my favourite songs of all time! Absolutely beautiful.
this is like the definition of a perfect song
the control and mastery of synthetic sound in this song is nearly unmatched
It's a very well filmed video. I wake up and get dressed to it every morning.
Fabulous gets right inside ya emotions
Such a nice song, builds so brilliantly completely engrossed by the end. Love it!
Great job with the video! Love this song (rip Austin)
This song gets in your head
Thought this is really the official MV. Really nice vid. 😁
This here brings back some memories... uh... and those synths!
This is so good
Dam i love this music scene: LCD s, arcade fire, tv on the radio, fleet foxes. This is what MTV should strive for, great music selection with some interesting video production. Your awesome broski!
I first heard this song when I was pregnant. I refused to listen to it again until after she was born just to avoid jinxing myself. :( I really love the song though, and this video's lovely.
Love this song! Was looking for original vid, then came across this! It's great!
Well I was an adult when I this came out. It reminds me of my sister, who loved LCD.
I think I have been to the places in the video when I was in Stockholm. Funny enough this has appeared in my recommended as I’m listening to lcd in a wave of nostalgia for the months I spent in Sweden some years ago.
Back then I listened to This is Happening in loop bc it sounded as estranged as I was. I had a peak of happiness on a sunny day while I was visiting Stockholm alone. I spent the entire morning on some rocks in Hornstull that looked exactly like the ones in this video, looking at the view on the city hall on the other side of the river and talking online with the girl I liked who was back in mother country and trying not to fall asleep bc I had spent the night in a crappy hostel nearby. I then proceeded to walk on probably the same bridge as this guy, getting lost on the way to the suburbs and feeling like the best was ahead of me. Which might have been a foolish feeling
Just. Utterly. Incredible
reminds me of highschool and so many experiences. great band.
this song makes me so sad im happy.
Wow. That's really touching and goes well with the song. I love it.
This is so much better than any of the other songs? The words fit the track so well emotionally and harmoniously. Ill listen to some other LCd now I think there was another one that was nice.
Great song, and a great fan made video clip to compliment it!!
love of my life gone forever
the world will keep turning without you
but i don't think it'd be worth it
I love this tune; it's heartbreaking. My ex-wife introduced this tune to me back in 2008 and then we were divorced in 2009. Forever Alone!!! =(
Was listening to this today in the car and then I came on youtube, curious if there is a video to it. I found this!
Great work to a great song!
FreeЯadikal there was an original where the main character was a female silohuite. UA-cam took it down.....10x better.
Masterpiece
Ok this is the best video I've seen for this track so far
grief is everywhere
so much great vibess one of the all time favorites (:
Ahead of its time
I feel every word of this song...
This has to be one of my favorite songs of all time.
Got here from TMBG discord & a passing reference from #MarkWheat & #JillRiley at 89.3 - The Current in Minnesota.
It doesn't matter what exactly it's about. It's about loss in general--that's all that matters. Personally I think it's about his wife's still born child, based on the lines, "You're smaller than my wife imagined/ surprised you were human." and the fact that Murphy promised his wife he wouldn't tell the world what it's about.
>School project
>Dude smoking
Loved the video btw
Hey, this was awesome! Well done man! Thanks for sharing, probably my favorite video to listen to this song to!
So well achieved! I really love this. Can't stop watching it!
seen em 3 times, each time better than last. Class outfit live!
Magnificent tune.
one of the best songs ever written.
This is the sort of new wave stuff, we've been waiting for from the "now & snowflake generation” by gingoEs we've found something - brilliant stuff, love it :)
Such an underrated band
I'm glad you used the long format of this song. That 3 1/2 minute version is rubbish. Good video. Great song.
Listening to this and thinking of Bowie.
drumgold23 yeah dude
Apparently Bowie was one of the biggest factors that made LCD reform and make their subsequent album in 2017. He told them "you need to reform and make another album". I think that would make anyone write one if Bowie urges you to do so.
@@Jayisnotbae When do he told them that? I didn't know
DUDE! Epic work man! Seems almost like this is the fuckin music vid, thats rare. NICE! 5/5 FOR SURE!
WOW!!!!!!! Speechless... Aweosme indeed!!!!!!!
Superb!
Love it. NY artist.
I always come back to this - it feels like the official video to me because its the first video I saw related to this song. Also is this you in the video? You were hella cute! Perfect character to compliment the song.
Thank you Gossip Girl
Thank you
he is in the studio w the arcade fire... phuck yeahh
Greatest!
Always thought they sounded so British.... I understood why when I read about their influences
2019
Love that flow
you did an amazing job. i looooove this video and honestly, this is the best version of the track.
Thumbs up to you because I like all those same bands! Especially Fleet Foxes.
Sure man, gotta say, it really is among the best vids I have seen where someone ACTUALLY remade the vid.
When Someone Great (LCD Soundsystem) is gone............ ;( RIP LCD
This video is just so perfect
Found that friend. He remembered me. My heart. Remembered this song. He remembered the video, the beauty I was who was never noticed...hmmmm...came to find the video...alas, forgotten once again….(Video-- the blacked-out lover) Can't find it
I was sustainable in my shy crush lust for him. Especially his eyes before the party. And I turn away. That's why after all these years....he searched for me. I was someone great. I Am
When Someone Great is gone---when the original song video is too....sigh....
I miss Philip Seymour Hoffman. This song always reminds me of him
Why?
This video is ok and sometimes captures the song perfectly.. i feel the song is about MISSING some (close) one, and the suicide scene does not ad to that as i feel with the guy going around in the city and being quite alone even though his sourronded by people, The problem of living anomymous in city is a better description of this video ( i would cut out the suicide scene) and replaced it with a
6:27 minutes can be so short, too short sometimes.
@jerkus89 The song is about someone dieing of cancer or something of the short, and slowly watching someone waste away.
This the only way I listen to this song
