  • One of the common questions I am asked in my Orthopedic practice is, "Can I lift weights after shoulder replacement?"
I advocate for a balanced approach when it comes to resuming weightlifting activities post-surgery. Once you have successfully completed your rehabilitation program and received medical clearance to engage in physical activities based on your tolerance, I believe that weightlifting can indeed be a beneficial part of your health regimen.
The one type of lifting I strongly discourage following a shoulder replacement surgery is overhead pressing or any similar overhead maneuvers. These activities can place an excessive burden on the new joint and should be avoided to prevent potential complications.

Thanks for the video, I’m having a shoulder replacement in October. I’m 34 and it’s such a huge part of my life. I’m just way too young to give it up

62.Both shoulders bone on bone.Probably caused by 35 years of heavy lifting 4-5 times a week.
I'ld be happy if I could do some push ups and pull ups again.
Ego lifting days are over for me.They disappeared together with my hair.😢

Have you had arthroscopic surgery before ? If not, after the surgery you might want to sleep in the recliner to keep the pressure off the shoulder for week or so. You arm will be in a sling for 6 weeks and about 10 wks therapy. When I had my right shoulder done - surgery '07 everything you need to do will be done by your left hand which will be different. Had to go to Physical therapy 2x a week and you will do those exercises 3x a day at home. Towards the end of the 10 weeks of therapy the time exercising will be 1hr + -. I had my Left shoulder replaced in '20, and I will get my right replaced after the winter snow in March '25. Hamburg, NY

Deadlifts and back squats, in the heavier range, is that I’ll advised? I’m younger but the shoulders are fried from military service. Worried that I can’t back squat or deadlift heavy like I do now.

FWIW I do one every morning. THen 19 1/4 to 1/2 pushups, more of an isometric exercise. I used to do 20 pushups every morning. Hence the numbers. I am 56 years old, 6'3" and weigh 255 FWIW. My fighting weight is about 235-240 so should lose some weight.

How long should I avoid overhead exercises for after a rotator cuff surgery?

I just had the newer style shoulder replacement surgery 2 months ago with pryocarbonite implant without the spacer. I’m 35 and hope to have better results than with the spacer.

I’ve just had my 4th replacement surgery in the last 2 and a half years. I went from anatomical to reversal in both shoulders and that was the ticket for me..unbelievable recovery compared to the others. Taking the rotator cuff out of the picture was the answer. My question for you is, ask by another poster, is it safe to do light side laterals. I’ve been able to do these pain free with very light weight and high reps ( 10-15lbs..25 reps). Am I ok to continue this or am at risk wearing something out?? Thanks!
