An Intimate History of Mussolini's Italy
A discussion with the author
Christopher Duggan, University of Reading
in conversation with:
David Forgacs, NYU
Molly Tambor, Long Island University
Professor Duggan's ground-breaking study draws on thousands of letters sent to Mussolini, as well as private diaries, to show how Italian citizens lived under the Fascist regime and some of the feelings and attitudes they expressed about Mussolini and Fascism. It includes some famous diaries, such as that of the philosopher Benedetto Croce and the Fascist minister Giuseppe Bottai, but the majority of voices come from unpublished sources. Duggan explores the cult of the "Duce", including its quasi-religious dimensions, and the extraordinarily intimate character of the relationship between Mussolini and millions of Italians.

The book mentioned at 52:30 is L'uomo della provvidenza by Arrigo Petacco.
Excellent discussion, but the recording is unfortunately fairly quiet. Unfortunate also that Christopher Duggan is no longer with us, I pray that he found rest and safety in the next world.
No subtitles ?
He actually portrays fascism quite well
Excellent and riveting
How can he speak at such length without giving any concrete examples to support what he says? Does not seem to have any mastery of the material
Didn't Mussolini push to make Italians eat risotto because it was a more 'hardy' food, apparently.
what?
No, because Italy is the largest European producer of rice and Mussolini was aiming at making the country completely self sufficient

No, quella era la campagna del grano.
In autarchia serve il pane, non il riso.
