What advantages do highly sophisticated racing machines give the cycling pros? To find out, we pit a Guardian journalist on a £6,000 Tour de France bicycle against elite national-level rider Iain Cook on a variety of less advanced machines, including a Dutch shopping bike and a London hire bike. Who will win? Peter Walker reports from Herne Hill Velodrome in south London - Спорт
when non cyclists talk about bikes
Any cycling professional knows it's the cyclist that is responsible for 99% of the success. The bike has to be designed and built for it's intended goal/usage.
lol 21 gears doesn't mean anything for performance on the track.
Yeah, a high-level track racer with a single gear would beat them both :)
Yeah, even the rent bike had 2 more than a track bike.
For a single lap it does
You guys ought to have done a base test, both on the bmc to emphasise the difference!!!!
how can you be that slow on such a nice bike? Thats just over 30km/h over a very short distance? Thats not average, thats way below average.
Keine Angabe even a mountain biker that usually has no endurance, such as me, can still go MUCH faster than that, this guy is so slow it makes me cringe
looks like he is actualy afraid to push limits
Triggered
Guy in the pink layed down about 85 watts 😂
Very bad test. Proved nothing
this was just for the fun of it!
It's Top Gear style tests, done for the laughs.
He even says right in the very beginning that their test is "very unscientific" It was done for shits and gigs
You're not going to see ultegra cranks and mtb pedals on any tour de france machine!!
8 minutes of my life I will never get back
As with all experimental results, the results indicate cause and effect given the circumstance. The question is are all the assumptions transparent and are the results interesting. I would enjoy a fuller experiment to see control sets isolating tires, wheels, frames, component sets, rider fit alignments, rider health, and beer. This setup may make for a far more interesting video and provide professional and amateur riders alike opportunity to question their assumptions about their current cycling fitness programmes.
it almost looked as if only the first race was planned, but having lost, you needed to find some bike that you'd actually win against. the third race seemed absurd after the second one. like it was only setup to humiliate Iain.
better report imo would be to make Iain race with the worst bike first and then giving him better and better bikes, including the BMC.
Just for arguments sake, repeat this using 2 bikes with 700c x 23-25 tires. One top of the line carbon and the other the lowest end in the line. IE Giant Defy5 vs Giant Defy/TCR Advanced SL/Pro or Specialized Allez Sport vs Specialized Tarmac S-Works. Or if you really want, the cheapest dedicated road bike available on-line versus that BMC.
All4Grogg That could end up being bad for the sellers as it would prove that it is the man and not the bike that counts!!
You would make 1k+ bikes questionable for anyone other than the pro racers and that would damage one of the fastest growing industries these days, so I dont think we will be seeing that kind of comparison any time soon
Marin Bilandzic Check out DamianRider on UA-cam, he did a comparison where he set a better time on a $500 road bike than another rider did on a $15000 bike!
FuryRC *durianrider
Mitchell Steindler True, I'm going to blame autocorrect.
FuryRC I just found that video. no where did he mention he was faster on his bike than someone on a 15 k bike, all he said was mostly that you can still set a good time on a cheap bike
I have a pinnacle lithium (though mine was a bit more expensive) so I'm glad it didn't do too badly.
Love the humor in this video. I can't believe fellow humans didn't see that.
Even the same bike can be improved for performance, before I got more into cycling my aluminium hybrid bike had my seat pretty low, more like a mountain bike, once I raised it up properly I could put the power down much better. That upright position of the Dutch bike really didn't do any favours to aerodynamics or efficient power output, and even though Boris bike only had three gears I bet a track style fixie would have been perfect for this kind of two lap race.
With an ultegra groupset?!
it was the ultegra di2 group set. electronic shifting.
I've literally just bought a brand new bike for under £2,000 that includes full Ultegra di2, a quality £700 DT Swiss wheelset and a full carbon frame which is hand made in Germany. And that included international UPS postage. I think I did well. It will arrive in the next few days. But for £6000 I'd expect/want at least Dura Ace di2 on a set of Enve SES 3.4 wheels. To put things in perspective, a brand new top end 1000cc Ducatti Monster can be bought, brand new, for less than £10,000. We cyclists have been targeted as the most gullible consumer group within society. For what you get, the prices are, quite frankly, ludicrous. I blame fat, just retired, middle aged, lycra-wearing, men who've a large pension burning a hole in their pockets.
I agree lol. Where did you order your bike from? I want that deal. I ride a focus cayo with just the 105 group set, disc brakes, and dtswiss r522 wheels for US 2,500. German engineered made in taiwan haha. I love it but i think you got a far better deal.
What frame you have?
The video was published in 2013, so it was probably a bit more high end back then :)
Should have finished it off by swapping bikes to see what the track rider can do with the right equipment.
Guardian cycle blog writer own a shit old bike and seems to know very little about cycling, perfect guy for the job.
The key word being 'Guardian', socialists can't do sports.
indeed, it made me feel physically ill to look at that piece of crap he rides... would be far better for him and his kid if he forked out 100 pounds on the internet for a used 30 year old 10 speed, or anything else made for the road.....
The track record for 2 laps is 1:05.35 (Louis Magnani). After checking some other links, I found that is a standing start like the video races are.
Steel retro bike and Pro Cyclist vs BMC and ordinary bloke would be more appropriate, or even to test the difference between retro and modern in speed and time.
It's always Been the rider
Most aero gains come from body position anyways..
If you are racing people the same fitness as you (ballpark)- the equipment and tactics are what's going to give you that extra edge to win. Simple as that. The bike is a tool. It doesn't do anything. You are the engine and the bike is the rest. Without the engine- the car doesn't move. Without the car- the engine doesn't move. A lighter, more aerodynamic, more stiff vessel for the coefficient of your energy to be minimised is vital in a race that determines the best of the best. If you're an amateur, no point in looking at aero gear before you are regularly in the leading group/breakaway and are winning some races. And by that point- you'll probably have a team that will help you out with equipment.
does anybody have the full video, this one is shortened version.
This video is very ... special.
It is mostly the rider...
Should have let him do two laps on the BMC to see what his times would have been, and perhaps you do two laps on the second fastest bike.
Fun! What kind of time did Iain do on the BMC or a track bike?
00:01:45:72 on 900m? That is only 30,65kph! And this from a "racer"?!? Come on! This is bullshit!
Tamas Balogh Yes! This is a Bullshit. 00:01:45:72 on 900m?With a Aero-Racer???Never! This is a Fake.
Would have love to see what time Ian would've put down with the BMC.
This test was for entertainment purposes only, and it failed at that.
I didn't expect the regular guy to win anything!
And next time at the Muppets: Goalgetters or just balls-is it possible scorin without legs?
Stay tuned! Itzs sensationaL--- for sure
LOL as soon as I saw the presenter coming in I literally died
CTFU bruh
That cadence was like he was off to pick up milk.
I'm a simple Dutch guy ...
I see a Gazelle bike i Up-vote!
Someone that looks even more awkward on a racing bike than Chris Froome. Although Chris is a hell of a lot more efficient on one.
6k?
This sounds like the guy from the band Antennas to heaven
This question should be a no brainer
the athlete ALWAYS trumps the equipment but the equipment is critical if your athleticism is in the top 5% of all about you.
Bravo. You've proved a bike with a 2x10 drivetrain can be pedaled faster than a singlespeed or a bike with three gears. The rider is irrelevant in this context. I'm buying The Indy instead of The Guardian today in protest at your wasting 10 minutes of my life.
What about the age and skill difference. Get a guy in the same age shape and he would have dusted him!
This is a poor test, since there is no control. You would want to have both cyclists do a trial on both bikes and compare between bikes, and then compare rations between riders.
It makes me think once again how he can cope with cheap racer I have beaten many proud bikers on mine cost 240, I wanted to sell it cruise very well.
Really want to go on a velodrome
Should have been the same rider but with different bikes to test the difference
What was the Race music??
According to Lance, it's not about the bike
Fernando Miralles Delgado Lance who?! 😂
Marco Kalle Lance Armstrong I'd assume
Thomas Metcalfe that's what I said: Lance who? 😂
its never about the bike the difference have always came from the drugs
Who are you going to believe, an elite cylsit or a pathetic looking Graun writer. Course it's the rider, with all other variables being relatively equal.
This made me so happy, so much truth 👍
I think if he was clipped in and had a fitting bike it would answer the question
This session brought to you by BMC
“Tour De France” bike with Ultegra groupset and 7.5 kg weight. Right.
The bike does make a difference. The difference between my one road bike and my other is like walking in sand vs walking on concrete. All of the power on a good bike goes to forward motion and not meant for comfort. Should have had that elite cyclist ride the bikes and leave the other guy out of it. So much goes into bike speed like stiffness for power transfer, spoke tension to transfer power, rim stiffness to not lose power through flex, aerodynamics to not lose speed through drag. If the bike didn’t make a difference we would all save our money and race department store bikes. I’ve had to many guys on 15,000 bikes tell me the bike doesn’t matter. Yes if everyone is riding a 10/10 bike it comes down to fitness but we are not all on 10/10 bikes.
Bruh , there is a reason why you dont race a mountain bike on a road race or a bmx to a road race because they are different categories
Its like u want to eace a skilled moto rider with 50cc bike and an average rider with 1000cc bike
they should have put the same person on each bike
that BMC looks sweet...
wow electronic gears sweet I need this n my life whos buyin?
its a bmc time machine not a tour de France machine?
they had to put the stronger rider on the most unbelievable piece of sxxx bike you could imagine so he couldn't win... maybe they could have taken a wheel off to slow him down some more... :) you could put him.on any used 100 pound used Fuji or Panasonic 10 speed from the '80's and he would win by a huge gap over any distance... in cycling you can not buy speed, you have to earn it, bikes are not cars... a better bike makes a difference only between otherwise more or less evenly matched riders...
enjoyed
just fun
I think we all agree gravity is take home lesson here
That BMC costs nowhere near £6000, more like £4000 which is still al lot don't get me wrong but still significantly less than what they say it costs.
Buddy looking at your legs tells it all
If he would’ve gone on the black line he might’ve bet Ian
Should have Swap bike and get the difference after each turn : (
should have let Ian have a go on the BMC!
Should have switched riders at least once to see what kind of difference there really is.
Toyota yaris with bugatti engine vs bugatti with yaris engine. What do you think
Disappointing since especially coming from The Guardian
Of course we all know it's not the bike, it's the engine.
Lemme tell u something. A car in my country cost about a million. That country is Singapore. A
Give him clipless it would be a better test
super!!!
Give that man an second hand full carbon Scott bike with Ultegra and will demolish you man.
I'm no expert, and an uneducated pleb compared to the average Guardian reader, but it looks to me as if the journalists legs were really poorly positioned on the BMC. He was slow, but he could of gone quicker if he raised the seat a bit. Although saying that, who gives a shit?
10 miniutes ill never get back of my life
Pretty frustrating video for me honestly. First of all the reporter used clipless pedals. With that being sad he will use some time to clip them in which is not fair, especially cause he is not used to them. Second: his saddle height was too low so couldnt transfer as much power as he would if the saddle was spot on. Not to mention that the pro's shitty bike wasnt fitted perfectly either which makes a big gap in the test.
21gears, do you think this is car racing?
6000lb is like 3 tons
this is such a good quality, well written video.
Make birf not war!
Man how can you claim to ride a bike if you cannot remotely get close to a descent sprinting start?? Smh
I think if you gave the guy with the crappy bikes lipless pedals, he could have won every race.
Clipless
7.6 Kg bike? That's so heavy
is it tho
teasing
How can zoo be so slow with e bike like this
This is funny!
>biohazard signal with rainbows
....naaaaaah dog
I think the cheap bike/ power rider will win. Put it in the right gear and GO.
tdf bike with spds and ultegra hahah
Man 5 Bike !? 0.o
should of tested a downhill bike
Too short! 80km race!
the timemachine is quite ugly.
Just goes to show how cycling has become the new golf for middle aged men 😔
thanks for helping me to decide to never read that piece of Brad Pitt rag again
are you even trying ? pufff
And then me, with one speed russian bike...
