    What advantages do highly sophisticated racing machines give the cycling pros? To find out, we pit a Guardian journalist on a £6,000 Tour de France bicycle against elite national-level rider Iain Cook on a variety of less advanced machines, including a Dutch shopping bike and a London hire bike. Who will win? Peter Walker reports from Herne Hill Velodrome in south London

    Any cycling professional knows it's the cyclist that is responsible for 99% of the success. The bike has to be designed and built for it's intended goal/usage.

    As with all experimental results, the results indicate cause and effect given the circumstance. The question is are all the assumptions transparent and are the results interesting. I would enjoy a fuller experiment to see control sets isolating tires, wheels, frames, component sets, rider fit alignments, rider health, and beer. This setup may make for a far more interesting video and provide professional and amateur riders alike opportunity to question their assumptions about their current cycling fitness programmes.

  • @teeds88
    @teeds88 8 років тому +24

    it almost looked as if only the first race was planned, but having lost, you needed to find some bike that you'd actually win against. the third race seemed absurd after the second one. like it was only setup to humiliate Iain.
    better report imo would be to make Iain race with the worst bike first and then giving him better and better bikes, including the BMC.

  • @All4Grogg
    @All4Grogg 9 років тому +14

    Just for arguments sake, repeat this using 2 bikes with 700c x 23-25 tires. One top of the line carbon and the other the lowest end in the line. IE Giant Defy5 vs Giant Defy/TCR Advanced SL/Pro or Specialized Allez Sport vs Specialized Tarmac S-Works. Or if you really want, the cheapest dedicated road bike available on-line versus that BMC.

    • @WatchGeek
      @WatchGeek 9 років тому +4

      All4Grogg That could end up being bad for the sellers as it would prove that it is the man and not the bike that counts!!
      You would make 1k+ bikes questionable for anyone other than the pro racers and that would damage one of the fastest growing industries these days, so I dont think we will be seeing that kind of comparison any time soon

    Even the same bike can be improved for performance, before I got more into cycling my aluminium hybrid bike had my seat pretty low, more like a mountain bike, once I raised it up properly I could put the power down much better. That upright position of the Dutch bike really didn't do any favours to aerodynamics or efficient power output, and even though Boris bike only had three gears I bet a track style fixie would have been perfect for this kind of two lap race.

    • @chrisjames1924
      @chrisjames1924 7 років тому +29

      I've literally just bought a brand new bike for under £2,000 that includes full Ultegra di2, a quality £700 DT Swiss wheelset and a full carbon frame which is hand made in Germany. And that included international UPS postage. I think I did well. It will arrive in the next few days. But for £6000 I'd expect/want at least Dura Ace di2 on a set of Enve SES 3.4 wheels. To put things in perspective, a brand new top end 1000cc Ducatti Monster can be bought, brand new, for less than £10,000. We cyclists have been targeted as the most gullible consumer group within society. For what you get, the prices are, quite frankly, ludicrous. I blame fat, just retired, middle aged, lycra-wearing, men who've a large pension burning a hole in their pockets.

  • @brunobaumanis7869
    @brunobaumanis7869 5 років тому

    If you are racing people the same fitness as you (ballpark)- the equipment and tactics are what's going to give you that extra edge to win. Simple as that. The bike is a tool. It doesn't do anything. You are the engine and the bike is the rest. Without the engine- the car doesn't move. Without the car- the engine doesn't move. A lighter, more aerodynamic, more stiff vessel for the coefficient of your energy to be minimised is vital in a race that determines the best of the best. If you're an amateur, no point in looking at aero gear before you are regularly in the leading group/breakaway and are winning some races. And by that point- you'll probably have a team that will help you out with equipment.

    The bike does make a difference. The difference between my one road bike and my other is like walking in sand vs walking on concrete. All of the power on a good bike goes to forward motion and not meant for comfort. Should have had that elite cyclist ride the bikes and leave the other guy out of it. So much goes into bike speed like stiffness for power transfer, spoke tension to transfer power, rim stiffness to not lose power through flex, aerodynamics to not lose speed through drag. If the bike didn’t make a difference we would all save our money and race department store bikes. I’ve had to many guys on 15,000 bikes tell me the bike doesn’t matter. Yes if everyone is riding a 10/10 bike it comes down to fitness but we are not all on 10/10 bikes.

    they had to put the stronger rider on the most unbelievable piece of sxxx bike you could imagine so he couldn't win... maybe they could have taken a wheel off to slow him down some more... :) you could put him.on any used 100 pound used Fuji or Panasonic 10 speed from the '80's and he would win by a huge gap over any distance... in cycling you can not buy speed, you have to earn it, bikes are not cars... a better bike makes a difference only between otherwise more or less evenly matched riders...

    Pretty frustrating video for me honestly. First of all the reporter used clipless pedals. With that being sad he will use some time to clip them in which is not fair, especially cause he is not used to them. Second: his saddle height was too low so couldnt transfer as much power as he would if the saddle was spot on. Not to mention that the pro's shitty bike wasnt fitted perfectly either which makes a big gap in the test.
