Shout out to Zeyzal for being a guest. He breaks down topics succinctly and doesn't sugar coat bad drafts/executions. You could tell he made a bunch of points Thorin or Monte were just about to make, by their animated facial expressions. Great episode.

Zeyzal is a really good player, but it's obvious that when he is tired of playing, there will be a place for him in analysis and content creation or even coaching. I am excited to see him staying in the space as a front-facing player.

Unspoken truth re: LPL is that cultural attraction/ lack of attraction does matter. It isn't the main determining factor since if the English language broadcast was super strong and Riot was invested in it then people would watch, but the reality is that people have a different view of China to the one they have of South Korea. People in the West generally just don't like China (see Hong Kong) and though everyone understands that this isn't the players' fault, it is hard to avoid thinking in these categories.

I'm a big fan of the G2 roster so I'm happy they're going to keep playing together, but at the same time I am worried that they're making this play so early on. Every great dynasty team has had some small changes each year with a few players around some central core to stay on top. They got away with it this year with the role swap to stay fresh and motivated but doing that for 2 more years is going to be rough, unless Wunder wants to start playing musical chairs too.
Plus I hope they win but if they don't win world's the mental will be tough

    • @vktesla
      @vktesla 4 роки тому

The good thing about contracts, they arent absolutely concrete. I'm confident that if the team feels they need to make changes, they will. Regardless of their fiscal responsibilities, and they may even have a way out of these contracts, or the players recieve some sort of play bonus or performance bonus, so a contracted player not playing might hurt them very minimally financially. Although I do not know, I've never looked at a League contract in my life :D.

On the lpl topic, the sad truth is that no one is interested in marketing the lpl. Their native broadcast has enough viewership and is drawing in enough sponsors that they really dont care about the additional 100k western audience.

Interestingly enough, they didnt take this into account, I wonder if part of that negligence in expanding their viewership outside of their country has anything to do with their traditional xenophobia. At this point I would guess money means more to these guys than any lingering xenophobia, but psychology sure is an interesting thing when you're barraged with a message your whole life.

On Thorin's argument at the end (2:19:39), in the case of very good players the NBA is set up so you can make the most money by staying with your team actually in the form of supermax contracts. There are rules about certain accolades the player needs to achieve to be eligible, but another rule is that it can only be offered by the team that drafted the player or traded for their rookie contract. Examples: Steph Curry, James Harden, Russell Westbrook

Wonder how it would effect the quality and profitability of the leagues if players started trying to strong arm teams for more money (Even if it is deserved IE: Perkz, Star players, championship rosters). Would be sweet to hear regarding that from people with more of an inside perspective like Monty/Thorin when the topic comes up about players fielding free agency in the off season if that became more common place.
Thanks for all the great content guys!

do we really think dota is more intuitive than league? i always thought that dota has a super hard learning curve compared to league. that could have been because of when i played, dota-->hon --->lol and then i was so into league that i played 3 games of dota 2 and quit it. Have they made updates to make it more intuitive that im not aware of?

People not watching LPL or LCK more to me is not a problem, tbh is a choice, i know that LPL and LCK are better regions than LCS that i casually watch but i dont have the time to watch multiple regions and just stick with the one that i grew into over the years and became invested in with the stories and narratives, people that do have the free time or were invested in lck from the start do watch these regions but for a big chunk of viewers this is just not feasible

Why I'm not watching LPL: - The teams I am attached to are playing in the LEC
    - I only have a limited amount of time and with that I prefer to watch the teams I'm attached to
of course LPL is the best region right now but I also didn't watch LCK when Korea was the best region so that alone is not a reason for me to watch it. I'm watching now Sandbox because I want to see Yamato succeed and sometimes skip through T1 in hope of seeing them lose.

Thorin: Bjergsen doesnt look good as a player or even a mid laner, there are so many better then him just in NA alone. He is only a safe playing control mage player who sucks.
everyone else: Thorin shut the fuck up, you have no idea what youre talking about.

I can't speak for them , but for me knowing that I am experiencing a sick play at the same time as the players and all the majority of the fans is what I am enjoy the most. To give you an example from a tradition sport (as I try to imitate Thorin) in game 6 of the 2013 heat vs spurs match where Ray allen hit that legendary shot. There are so many intangibles that you can't feel by watching the vod. An example of one of them is like how the clock is winding down as Allen is getting the rebound from Chris Bosh the same level of tension is when the baron is going down on a 50/50 or a player is attempting a 1v1 kill and everyone is wondering if the last 2 tiks of ignite will be enough to get the kill.

Another thing is I would care for the LPL if the production was a lot better and their stream wouldn't lag randomly where their own team tells you to go to youtube and watch a 2min delay.
Hell during the first KR exodus the casters was a huge reason people would give up on watching LPL. It feels like they're too scared to criticize any player. Frosk said it herself that part of her duties was to shill hard for LPL.

Thorin is right about free agency, but if a team has X budget for salaries, and every player could earn 1/3 of that team's budget at other teams - they can't play together and earn the most money at the same time, they have to compromise. If you find 5 incredible players, who are having fun playing together and have good synergie, noone wants to experiment. Look what happened with TL after moving 1 piece. From 1st to 9th. Tldr: Free agency is good for improving the league, fixing player values, but not ideal if you want to be the best in the world.

the thoorin narrative on bjerg is SO exagerated man. Bjerg has being roaming A LOT this split, and has being the only one making plays this split so far. Sure, sometimes he goes for more supportive champs like zilean, looses prio, but thats has to do with the pick and the role the team gives him.
Even zeyzal aknowledges this, but is polite enought to not call out thoorin no his delusion...

  • @Zeroyue622
    @Zeroyue622 4 роки тому +1

The biggest problem with tsm is their questionable draft and lose with it. Seriously get someone who known how to draft. TL got Jatt and we rarely complain about their draft. The we look at their players. Broken Blade, he is a bottom tier top laner right now. He is better than new academy top and at same level as washed up NA top laners like Lourlo. However, Broken Blade is an import! We have to put Ryoma’s standard on him. Who is the other import top? Ssumday. Broken Blade is not even close. The we look at Spica, he is at bottom 3-4 at LCS. Yes he is a fresh NA talent at his first split. But this is jungle meta! If you look at those game TSM lose and you can felt the jungle difference. Every game they lose beside the doublelift syndra game, Spica felt doesn’t exist. For Bjergsen, he is not at his prime, but he still is good. He can still solo carry the game like his azir or BD to victory with our. And he DO roam when it make sense. You can’t roam with Azir, ori and zilean. His mid Fid always roam. For his LeBlanc, where should he go? To gank a tank with cc immunity and your top laner loses on counter pick? Or to a double stealth lane with heals and your bot lanners only have poke? For doublelift, yes he can’t play mage. But it is not like everyone else is playing it. There is only 3-4 mage games in NA for the whole split. Yes he make mistakes, but none of them are like Zven ezreal mistakes that lose you the game. For Biofrost he is not great but he is serviceable. At least he save the game with multiple hooks on Ryoma.
    TLDR:
    Tsm has bad draft
Broken blade is Top lane Ryoma
Spica is fresh talent but on a jungle difference meta
Bjergsen and Biofrost is serviceable and sometimes can pop off
Doublelift often make small mistake but most of the time is serviceable

Does monte not do any research at all? That rant about tower plates at 1:58:00 is completely out of place. You can say you disagree with the tower tankiness mechanic, but saying that it is obscure or difficult to decipher is complete BS.
1- the whole stated reason they added tower plates was to extend lane phase, the dev team told us right from the start they don't want top laners to potentially lose their tower off 1 gank.
2- you can click the tower at any time in the game and read about every effect it has, even ancient stuff like stealth detection, it's all there.
3- even if you don't follow the devs and don't read tooltips or armor values, just play the game. there is no way anyone who plays this game at any level above mega casual didn't notice their damage to the tower go way down after taking plates.

I don't watch LPL because, even though they are the strongest region, they are not strong in a way that's interesting to me. When LCK was dominant, it was because of big brain macro, combined with strong mechanics. Now that the game has somewhat devolved into slamming your face into the other team and hoping you come out on top, LPL reigns, but it doesn't pull me in in the same way.

I 90% agree with you. Maybe the exact same, maybe not, what disturbs me is that LCK was about minimizing risk (vision control, measured dives, counterplay) and i love it for playing like that, while LPL gameplay has an inbuilt coinflip so it will NEVER stop being just *messy*. It doesn't look professional at all, it's guerrilla warfare at best.

I have no interest in the over eager LPL or NA or even EU lcs casters. But imagine what American football's numbers would be if their broadcasts were in the middle of the night, commentated by a pair of well meaning dudes with no support, and a significant portion of the games each season were only commentated in a foreign language or on an alternate channel with a ragtag group of (again, well-meaning) people commentating a mute stream.
That is what LPL is. I'd be all in favor of allocating the NA LCS studio to simply rebroadcasting LPL matches with some kind of (hilariously variable) production quality, but the franchises in NA might object.
