My parents saw Billie in Hollywood in 1947 at the Pantages theater. We grew up listening to their collection of 78 RPM LP'S from the 30's and 40's still bitchen tunes today....Aloha
@@Ivan_Abram Close but not @ that age yet ivan. We had 78 rpm records my parents had and they were the ones that saw her perform live. Still really dig her music....Aloha
she was just the best. Completely amazing. My Dad did see her perform live. She was just sitting at the bar, quietly, like anyone else. They announced her. She got up, humble as can be, got to the microphone and just blew that room away....
Billie Holiday was not the first jazz artist to record “Summertime” (Bob Crosby recorded a transcription version five months earlier) but hers was the first recorded for 78s and it probably did more than any other version to establish the song as a potential jazz standard. I have had a strong connection to Lady Day since I was a teenager. Her voice and words sing to my soul. Funny I just saw a tarot reading regarding summertime, now this notification came up :-) Thank you, Thank you Universe, Billie Holiday, and RIP Philly who introduced me to Lady Day. Much love.
“Summertime” is the famous aria which opens George Gershwin’s opera, Porgy and Bess. It’s initially sung by Clara as a lullaby to her baby, though it’s later reprised by Bess. Though it was intended as an operatic number, it was quickly embraced by jazz singers. Source: Official Site Genius

'Holiday's accomplishments are all the more remarkable when oen realizes the limitations within which she worked. Her range, at best, spanned a scant one-and-a-half octaves. Her voice, moreover, did not project strongly-- unlike, say, a Bessie Smith, who also had a modest range, but could compensate by belting out a song to the back rows. Holiday lacked the scat-singing chops of an Ella Fitzgerald, the tonal purity of a Sarah Vaughan, the exuberance of a Louis Armstrong-- but what she had more than made up for these deficiencies. Her mastery was rooted in an incomparable sense of timing, phrasing that was supple yet uncommonly relaxed, and, above all, an ability to infuse a lyric with hitherto unknown depths of meaning. One might say that Billie Holiday was a stylist, not a virtuoso-- unless emotional depth is a type of virtuosity. Her interpretations cut to the quick of a song, crafting a music of interiors, not surfaces.' GIOIA, T- The History of Jazz, page 177.
@@Musicienne-DAB1995 She just sounds like she's super stoned or high to me, and from what I read, likely so. That said, music is subjective isn't it? I don't hear emotion in her singing, I hear someone struggling to stay awake. What resonates with some.... not so much with others. It is not something that can be measured objectively.... and I don't pull my opinions out of published books. I decide for myself.

I love the way Billie Holloday does this song. When I was growing up my mother listened to her.
Gone too soon! Such a unique and amazing voice. Always been my fav version of this song but dang if Fanatasia doesn’t run a close second.

Nice 🇮🇹🎺❤️
Amy winehouse and this woman singing together equals paradise
Add Ella Fitzgerald and you have a trio, with Louis Armstrong for added greatness
"Summertime and the livin' is easy"
How can people hate on this genius?
I’ve never heard anyone hate on Lady Day lol. Am I missing something?
