everyone gets attached to someone at some point and sometimes things end suddenly and you weren't prepared for it to end. Sometimes people exhibit "creepy" behavior like that because they wanted more out of the relationship. Eventually you get over it and realize that you aren't going to be with this person anymore and move on. I think this song acknowledges that
Then after you go through a sudden break-up the thought of those people that you showed affection and love to, is still in the back of your mind they won't ever leave because of the times and memories
What sucks is that the person exhibiting creepy behavior sometimes knows that they are doing it, but just cant help but do it. So it becomes a double conflict plus they need to try to stop it. Crazy things love makes you do

This is one of the most misinterpreted songs ever. It is about an obsessive stalker, but it sounds like a love song. Some people even used it as their wedding song. The Police frontman Sting wrote it after separating from his first wife, Frances Tomelty. In a 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership." Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: "I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. On one level, it's a nice long song with the classic relative minor chords, and underneath there's this distasteful character talking about watching every move. I enjoy that ambiguity. I watched Andy Gibb singing it with some girl on TV a couple of weeks ago, very loving, and totally misinterpreting it. (Laughter) I could still hear the words, which aren't about love at all. I pissed myself laughing."
@@Stigmatix666 I don't think you understand how comments, videos or the internet works. We don't all watch the video and comment at the same time. You know that right? You're not watching tv buddy, the internet keeps existing even after you turn off your computer. I know its a lot to take in but do your best to keep up.
this is not creepy. the imagery is not creepy stalking. its about lost nuerotic love; such as the woman still pining for the man who cheated on her repeatedly. if this is really about stalking, then whoever wrote it is the worst composer ever.
As a kid I thought "aww how sweet" but hearing the lyrics over and over it sounds more like a stalkerish song...the most sweet but stalkerish song ever. though i still love it. lol
my uncle used to play this song to me when i was younger. i still listen to it and i still live with him. i’m happy he showed me amazing music like this. the showed me to the police, the clash, oasis and so many other bands. i love you ❤️
Aside from all the jokes, as a 2000s kid I'm glad that my parents exposed me to good old music like this. This song especially makes me feel nostalgic. I also hate the modern music that people play today so I'm safer here.
MsHanna Heartattack if thats how you want to look at it. I'd like to think its about someone who watches said person falling in and out of relationships on a daily basis, never even realising that the one that longed to be with said person has actually been in front of them this whole time. Basically a friend who has always been there for you, but lets you go about life their own way. Its just me, but I think that just has a deeper meaning to it than simply being about stalking someone, which quite frankly is disgusting.
This songs reminds me of my grandmother, she left me when I was so young. I only wished to be with with her rn, but the universe had other plans. I love and miss you sm. I watched you leave this world, and it wasn't the most plesant site to watch. But your pain is no longer anymore. For you are dancing, laughing with your other loved ones.

Reminds me of the good old days sitting along the road every weekday afternoon during my lunch break listening to this on the radio whenever it'd come on, it certainly was a different world back then!
Every breath you take Every move you make Every bond you break Every step you take I'll be watching you Every single day Every word you say Every game you play Every night you stay I'll be watching you Oh, can't you see You belong to me How my poor heart aches With every step you take Every move you make Every vow you break Every smile you fake Every claim you stake I'll be watching you Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace I dream at night I can only see your face I look around but it's you I can't replace I feel so cold and I long for your embrace I keep crying baby, baby please Oh, can't you see You belong to me How my poor heart aches With every step you take Every move you make Every vow you break Every smile you fake Every claim you stake I'll be watching you Every move you make Every step you take I'll be watching you I'll be watching you I'll be watching you I'll be watching you I'll be watching you Whoo, hoo (Every game you play) (Every night you stay) I'll be watching you I'll be watching you (Every single day) (Every word you say) (Every game you play) (Every night you stay) I'll be watching you (Every move you make) (Every vow you break) (Every smile you fake) (Every claim you stake) I'll be watching you (Every single day) (Every word you say) (Every game you play) (Every night you stay) I'll be watching you
I always knew the meaning of this song- and I decided to listen to it again after having a long heart to heart with my best friend. I think we know things sometimes right away as children- and when I was little this song was about betrayal- and it rings so true tonight with the knowledge my mom is cheating on my step-dad, who was the dad who raised me and the one who protected me from being institutionalized and was with my mom for 30 years. This song speaks to my best friend who fell in love and cared for his partner only to suffer continual abuse and later false charges of rape. It speaks even to me- suffering my mother's possessiveness of not allowing me to have any bonds and at the same time herself being flaky. "Every Vow you break, every smile you fake, every claim you stake-" no, this is not a song about stalking what you desire and can't have- this is a song of being betrayed- and of being so deeply betrayed that you watch for it everywhere- you record every breath, step, and word as possible signs of a new betrayal. And the chords underneath is the longing to love and be loved- the deep sorrow- but how can you love when you cannot trust?
+kungfumaster51 It's actually a husband or boyfriend yearning for his partner who has left him. I don't think the word "stalker" should be used for such a person yearning for the one who left him and shattered his dreams...
This song brings back memories of an old x crazy boyfriend ,always on my back watching every move I made. He's gone ,but I'll never forget those days. Thank God it's over .
Me! Stranger Things is the dumbest show tbh (I mean, okay, I've never watched it and I don't have Netflix, but everyone talks about it too much and it's annoying and it sounds dumb lol)
Just.. like.. do you not even try to search for songs like this? Shape Of my heart - Sting Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton Message in a Bottle - The Police There are so many songs that have the same vibe as this song, just look for them
"Oh, can't you see-" The obsessed fangirl muttered as she right-click saved another picture of her idol onto her computer. She had half a thousand already but there could never be enough. "You belong to me." Sighing wistfully, she closed her laptop and stared at the poster on her wall imaging the day they'd meet and her idol would recognize her as The One.
Every breath you take Every move you make Every bond you break Every step you take We'll be watching you Every single day Every word you say Every game you play We are the NSA And We'll be watching you
The irony to this song being by "The Police" and titled "Every breath you take" with the recent inhumane act towards Eric Garner. He was choked and his last words were "I can't breath." Justice will be served if not by our government than by life. No hate towards anyone just want liberty and justice for all.
no need to be insensitive...like I said everyone has the right to their opinion. Glad you felt like letting me know mine was "unnecessary"! lilsilly1994
And there are flaws to your opinion, if someone can't breath then they can't speak. It's common sense. but I agree with The T16 you are trying to start shit
I've heard a lot of people call this a "stalker song", including a member of my family, and the only thing I can say to that is that those who say that either clearly aren't really paying attention to the song, or prefer to ignore the song's own lyrics in order to believe the darker interpretation. In the song, the lyrics clearly state, "every vow you break", among other things. To me, this is clearly and obviously a song about a very dedicated and loving husband and the pain he is feeling because of his cheating wife. He is watching her to see what she is doing because he knows she is lying to him.
I'm with you on that one. I only listened to this song because it's beautiful and I think it's a wonderful love song. I played this for my friend once and he liked it (: I'm way more of a disco fan than this trash people are singing today. All the songs are so dirty and I like clean, gentle songs like a soft guitar :)
Actually, Sting himself has said that it is a darker and more cynical song. He wrote during his divorce and the lyrics reflect his feelings of possessiveness and jealousy towards his wife.
I remember have seen in a documentary about The Police that one of the band members said that the song although, very romantic and rainbows, it was based on a voyeuristic guy watching the girl he was in love with (classic stalker behavior btw ). You don't have to put on camouflage and get into a bush at night with binoculars to stalk someone.
The most relaxing stalker song in the universe.
I found out he was talking about his ex-wife. I realized it after listening and hearing every vow you break.

Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: "I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic.
Congratulations, you regurgitated what has already been written.
@@arandombard1197 Congratulations. You spent one year thinking about that "excellent" comeback

Everybody saying this is creepy.
They're called the Police. Of course they're gonna watch you.

You like the police watching you sleep ?
What about the FBI??
this is not creepy. the imagery is not creepy stalking. its about lost nuerotic love; such as the woman still pining for the man who cheated on her repeatedly. if this is really about stalking, then whoever wrote it is the worst composer ever.
Big Brother watches over the city
Sting was simping before anybody else, truly ahead of his time lol
According to the almanac of serial killers from 1950- present
Not to be to confused with the wrestler.

As a kid I thought "aww how sweet" but hearing the lyrics over and over it sounds more like a stalkerish song...the most sweet but stalkerish song ever. though i still love it. lol

my uncle used to play this song to me when i was younger. i still listen to it and i still live with him. i’m happy he showed me amazing music like this. the showed me to the police, the clash, oasis and so many other bands. i love you ❤️
R u ok? Blink twice if ur being kept hostage
Was thinking the same thing lmao
Aside from all the jokes, as a 2000s kid I'm glad that my parents exposed me to good old music like this. This song especially makes me feel nostalgic. I also hate the modern music that people play today so I'm safer here.
Used to love this song... Recently listened to the lyrics again....yea..... The "Nice Guy" album's greatest hit...
oh the irony band is called " the police " and this song is about stalking
Literally just thought that xD
Omg.. lol
FroZenWrAitH666 Sting has stated himself that the song is about a possessive lover who can't let go... I much prefer your perspective on it though.
Holy shit are you serious
I LOVED this song when I was a kid. Never gets old and will always be one of the greatest songs of all times!!!
Beautiful, wonderful song and a sooo sweet voice, Sting!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!
This songs reminds me of my grandmother, she left me when I was so young. I only wished to be with with her rn, but the universe had other plans. I love and miss you sm. Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you
Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I'll be watching you
Oh, can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you
Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby please
Oh, can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake

When I hear this It breaks my heart, I think of my Girlfriend I once had she meant everything to me....I still Love her

The perfect song for a stalker to sing.
Not a stalker song people. He can't get her out of his mind after the breakup.
+kungfumaster51 It's actually a husband or boyfriend yearning for his partner who has left him. I don't think the word "stalker" should be used for such a person yearning for the one who left him and shattered his dreams...
The song isnt about that at all your clowness.
That's what the songs about

All rise for the Stalker National Anthem
"Oh, can't you see-" The obsessed fangirl muttered as she right-click saved another picture of her idol onto her computer. She had half a thousand already but there could never be enough. "You belong to me." Sighing wistfully, she closed her laptop and stared at the poster on her wall imaging the day they'd meet and her idol would recognize her as The One.

@@spencermiddleton830 yeah, doesn't mean it's true!
The irony to this song being by "The Police" and titled "Every breath you take" with the recent inhumane act towards Eric Garner. He was choked and his last words were "I can't breath." Justice will be served if not by our government than by life. No hate towards anyone just want liberty and justice for all.
Unnecessary...
no need to be insensitive...like I said everyone has the right to their opinion. Glad you felt like letting me know mine was "unnecessary"! lilsilly1994

That's not an opinion, you're trying to start shit.
He is watching her to see what she is doing because he knows she is lying to him.
i see both sides to this song, sometimes songs are made from more then 1 experience in the same song
True. I suppose you're right -- it could easily be both. :)

Every bond you break, every step you take, I'll be watching you.
