STOP confusing people.!! This can be done easily in two steps using two layers.
1) Select the object/pattern etc.
2) Place image layer on top, click or hold alt on the layer and clip it to the below layer.
Job Done

Dude I am using Ps CC and when you use Gradient on the layer is it same as gradient overlay in newer versions? And nothing is happening when I use screen mode

I for the life of me am not sure what i'm doing wrong with the effect. I follow yours step by step and when i get to the part where you add the mask on layer to put your picture inside the splash art mine doesn't do that. It just shows outside of the splash on a checkered background. Ideas on where i'm going wrong?

I do like the tutorial. But the one thing I can't stand is when I am watching a tutorial and you are using an older version of photoshop. I have Photoshop CS6... how can I apply to my knowledge if this video is out of date? I got to the part where we were suppose to invert the layer with a mask or something, and it was pretty much down hill from there. Confusing.

You should create a new empty layer since the begining, an brush on it. The color range was unnecesary. But is good anyway, good effect, like it!
