- As language teachers, we often encounter abstract words that can be challenging to explain. While translating into a student’s mother tongue might seem like the easiest solution (especially if you’re familiar with their language), it’s not always the best approach for fostering language acquisition in the classroom.
Instead, focus on explaining the target vocabulary directly in the language you’re teaching. Use simple definitions, examples, visuals, or even storytelling to make the concept clear and engaging. This approach not only makes learning more interactive but also helps students immerse themselves in the language, enabling them to become more comfortable and confident with it.
Understanding multiple languages is a valuable asset for ESL instructors-it allows us to empathize with our students and even troubleshoot when needed. However, the key is knowing when and how to leverage this skill effectively without over-relying on translation.
Let’s empower our students to think in their target language and unlock their potential! 💬✨
