That might be so for some people, but not all. My coffee consumption does not affect my anxiety or sleep. Coffee relaxes me, especially when drunk in a social setting with friends or family. When alone, I find it grounding and it distracts from current anxiety.

Hi doc! I personally love coffee so much to the point of addiction. After I started my ketogenic diet a couple of years ago and managed to reverse my diabetes and insulin resistance I turned my attention to my adrenal fatigue. I learned in that journey that caffeine is a neurotoxin and an endocrine disruptor in that it has a negative effect on the hormonal balance especially the adrenal gland hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, so I decided to drink only decaf coffee. I've been drinking decaf for almost a year. Now I feel much better in terms of sleep cycle and stress. Recently I turned my attention to my iron deficiency which in my case is originating from low stomach acid, so I started supplementing with iron. The problem I faced was that my morning cup of coffee is definitely going to block the absorption of that iron pill which I also take in the morning. So I decided to drop that morning cup of coffee, which is my only cup of coffee. It's been now 2 weeks coffee free. I never felt any better. I'm really surprised that you say that coffee is ok when you know very well that, along with tea, it blocks the absorption of many nutrients like iron. I'm convinced that caffeine in coffee and tea is bad for health, not to mention the other constituents they contain.
Finally, another sane person in this comments thread who is not just another caffeine addict thanking the doc for permission to carry on with their drug of choice.
Caffeine is more toxic to some than others. It's all about how efficient your liver is at making enzymes to break down the caffeine so it has minimal impact on other biochemical functions. That's the explainable reason why some people can consume copious amount of caffeine and it has minimal negative effects.
Thanks ! I suffer from excess Iron so for me your comment is a cue to drink more coffee lol. Seriously we are all different. If two coffees a day enables me to succeed in my life which some would call stressful, then I reckon the good outweighs the bad. For me.

Yes, same here. AFIB actually. For me caffeine is a very dangerous drug. Magnesium seems to help a bit. B1 doesn't appear to help at all at least in my case.
Dr. Rob, you are becoming my #1 Keto/Carnivore Doc! I have been struggling with my coffee consumption lately wondering if it is the culprit with loose stools and bloating transitioning from keto to carnivore (only been 1.5 mos.) I love my butter coffees in the morning (only two) and don't want to give them up!
Thank you for this! I have tried in the distant past more than once to quit coffee, and I just can't. I always came back. Now I drink my coffee and enjoy every yummy sip!
I love my coffee too! Thanks again for the reminder to stop trying to be perfect. This has helped me so much since you did the video on the character types. Looking forward to the vid on artificial sweeteners. I have stopped all sweeteners for the month of January.
You are great!!! I just discovered you today. I have listened to a bunch of doctors on UA-cam, but you are the first that gelled with me. I know I am on the right track.
Dr Cywes, I had to downsize my coffee intake. I had already swapped to instant coffee to go on having lots of cups along the day. In bed at night my leftside belly ached a lot each time. One day I decided to cut all of it but for two 50ml cups in the morning and one cup at 6-7pm plus some in the milk later on. Problem solved. No more pain. Not missing the long string of coffee intake events during the day. Cheers!
The dopamine/serotonin action is useful to know! I did try to enjoy caffeinated and sweetened drinks instead of eating/drinking carbs based on your recommendations. But I couldn't sleep from the caffeine (even in one green tea) and I got horrible headaches from the artificially sweetened sodas. I've never been interested in coffee. So I'm sticking to my favourite drink, which is sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon or lime. Even if the bit of lemon or lime might not be ideal for my teeth, I just love it. I also like herbal tea, my favourite is Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple Spice, which has quite a sweet taste, actually (I think it's the chicory in it). I also like decaff iced tea with lemon, and though I don't want to drink too many decaffeinated drinks, it's certainly nice to have occasionally.
I'm an endurance swimmer and swim between 2-8 hours at a time. I have a problem with gastric reflux when swimming if I eat anything with oil, fat and protein. What I can eat before I swim in large quantities for energy before I swim without suffering is Sour dough bred with potato flakes. I can't eat whole grain bread even because it too causes reflux for when swimming longer than an hour. So I eat up about a half a loaf of sour dough bread and can swim up to 8 hours with loads of energy and no problems with gastric reflux. Coffee is a killer before swimming but I do enjoy a cup of decaf after I'm done. Caffeine raised my b/p slightly so I avoid it. Some people are more Sensitive than others. I'm so happy coffee works for you to reduce your caloric intake. Enjoying your videos. Thank you.
I agree with your assertion that coffee does not cause acid reflux. I used to get it really bad. Eating packets of antacids a week. Reduced it by eating gluten free for a year. Removed it completely when going carni at the end of 2018. I only quit coffee about a month ago.
For me it was Sprite or 7Up, whichever was on offer that week at the supermarket, plus a daily pack of Haribo Tangfastics, chocolate biscuits with my afternoon tea and a bar of chocolate or a cake in the evening. I went cold turkey on sugar at the beginning of 2018. Apart from those obvious things, I excluded everything that has sugar on the list of ingredients e.g. gravy, brown sauce, ketchup etc. Those things are insidious ways of getting sugar into your body, they don’t taste sweet but the cells in your body are still getting refined sugar. A year later, I gave up alcohol. Beer is another insidious way of getting sugar into your body, it doesn’t taste sweet but it contains sugar. I don’t miss those things at all now. I buy organic coffee beans. I grind 30g beans in the morning and make a pint of coffee, which I drink black without sugar. I tried giving it up, but didn’t like feeling that I wasn’t properly awake. I don’t drink coffee again for the rest of the day, just the occasional cup of tea, but not in the evening because that can interfere with my ability to sleep.
Coffee is a little strong, but tea is better. I can use stevia or monk fruit to taste. Thanks Dr. Cywes for telling me that its ok not to be perfect in what I drink or how I eat. Ive known for years I was a carb addict, and didnt know how to fix it. I tried diet after diet thinking I'd fixed it each time. I was a perfectionist when dieting, then when the crash came(it always did), also came the feeling of failure. Ive always said that once I failed, I would get up and try again, which I did. This is the first time that anyone has really gone into detail about carb addiction the way you have. The info in this video made so much sense to me. Ive been a ketovore for over a year and have lost 109 lbs. The best part is the mental calm I feel not obsessing about food. I fell into intermittant fasting mainly because Im never hungry. I feel great now. Question- any chance this addiction is hereditary? My father's carb addiction was far worse than mine. Most of what he ate were process foods. Fast food commercials were a big trigger for him. Thanks again!
I often wonder about my brain when I feel like doing things just to do them compared to times when I just don't feel like doing anything, and how to fell more like the former. Sometimes coffee does that, but it usually makes me jittery.
I was worried when I read the title too!! Yikes, afraid you were going to suggest coffee needed to be avoided. But I really love it-in fact I’m enjoying a cup right now!!
Coffee - my drug of choice. I, too, am a carb addict that follows a mostly carnivore diet. I like coffee for many reasons but mostly because I enjoy the taste. I drink one regular coffee in the morning then usually decaf the rest of the day. At 74 I’ve been low carb to no carb for about 7 years. At 67 I was 220 lbs. now I’m 160, effortlessly. Never count calories and exercise because it feels good.
Thank you! I'm not crazy about coffee but fo drink a cup with stevia and coconut mct poweder and sometimes butter(when not cold) every morning. I've heard with adrenal issues you should stay away from caffeine. Would love to hear your take on that! 😊
Type 1 Diabetic here for more than 20 years. Ever since high school 80% of the time high morning bloods sugar. Cause? The “dawn effect”, high carb dinner, increased glycogen while sleeping, not enough insulin at dinner, etc What is causing my high blood sugar in the morning? Carbs and coffee. Eliminated both and my numbers are consistently around 100mg/dl…for me, even black coffee causes chaos in my hormones and messes up my blood sugar. I don’t know how long I can keep this up, but I crave coffee and carbs every damn day.
Doc, you answered your own question about the point of decaf. I don't drink regular coffee after 4pm to avoid sleep issues. A good decaf gives the same almost the same pleasure of drinking regular, minus the caffeine buzz.
Wow, I had no idea about your history. That's why you don't take any b.s. from other carb addicts! It takes one to know one! When I first saw the title of this video, I thought, 'oh please don't say that coffee is bad for you, because I can't give it up'! I only have one mug a day, but it's enough to wake me up!
It's amazing news Dr Cywes as I never wanted it to give it up. I know it's not animal food but can't deny myself this wonderful addiction. Thanks again for the great news.
24 years in the Navy ... there was ALWAYS coffee available, but maybe not cream and sugar. You learn early on to drink coffee black! I still love it. We've recently discovered the KETO coffee recipe. I was a bit grossed out by adding butter, whole cream and MCT oil to my coffee -- until I tasted it! It doesn't take the place of that first cup of black coffee in the morning, but I sure feel the positive attributes from it, plus it pretty tasty.
I drink coffee most mornings, but I don't need it. Every so often I quit coffee for a couple of months just to see if I have become dependent on it, and it's a solid no. I feel no differently when I have coffee than when I don't. No headaches, fatique, brain fog, sleep issues, anything. So I still drink it most of the time.
You’re great. I agree that just drinking water is terrible advice. It’s about the totality of what you’re doing to affect your health. Not dietary purity. Nobody is perfect. We should reward ourselves
Coffee for the win! BUT, I still take a few days to a week off every month or so. Your caffeine sensitivity increases when you restart and it makes it more enjoyable. I also add L-theanine to combat the jittery affects you might get.
The addiction model I use is that an addiction is something you want to stop, but can't. When it comes to caffeine, I don't want to stop. You can argue that I am chemically dependent, but I'm also chemically dependent on oxygen and water.
I love coffee but if I drink it past 10 am I am buzzing all night long. I am very hypersensitive to coffee. That’s a good thing, because I get a great big high every morning.
I love my coffee. I buy organic Kona coffee from Hawai'i, straight from the farm. I'm also drinking (first thing in the morning) chicory with heavy whipping cream powder, but I've got to have my Kona coffee every day. It literally helps me stay on the planet. The other drink I cannot live without is bubbly water made in my CO2 machine. When I gave up Coke and other soft drinks, I realized what I liked about it was the fizz. I missed fizz. With my CO2 water I have fizz. I don't add any flavorings to it; now and then I'll add some mineral drops to it to make it into fancy mineral water, but really, it tastes better to me just plain. I would like to become a matcha drinker, and have all the stuff to go with it, but for right now this is what I do. I had HORRIBLE acid reflux in the months before I discovered going grain- and sugar-free. Once I found Dr. Berg, who suggested apple cider vinegar and lemon juice and a little stevia in my CO2 fizzy water, and cut out the carbs, I've been fantastic ever since. And I still drink coffee every day. Acid reflux is not a coffee thing, at all.
Thank you. I do drink diet green tea and about 2 cups of coffee a day with HWC and Jordans Skinny syrup in it. I have been beating myself up over it. I keep telling myself I need to stop and go back strict carnivor, beef, Redmonds real salt, and just water.
I gave up sugar and love my black coffee with cinnamon stick and a ounce of salt…because I exercise a lot…and I’m thinking of adding back organic honey 😊
You got me with the title 😂 I almost unsubscribed! Thank you so much 😊 I greatly appreciate hearing from a fellow carbaholic. You are telling my story! Regular coffee a.m decaf after noon if I have. Happy Trails to you!
I'm a 4 mug (not cup) with heavy cream coffee drinker a day. I've thought of cutting back but giving it up is so undesirable. I'm trying to avoid drinking close to eating (even that's difficult) to maximize mineral absorption. The effects on blood pressure seem tricky, as it seems caffeine can both reduce (the right amount of caffeine) and increase (too much caffeine) blood pressure.
Fact: I love coffee. I have been drinking coffee since I was a child because that is what we drank on cold winter days coming in from the farm. Decaf, full throttle or mild as long as it is good. And I love my afternoon teas. Thanks for the fully charged video.
This is very helpful. I'm dealing with the after effects of chemo while trying to get my insulin down. The experimental chemo did a negative number on my endocrine system. I have gone carnivore a few months ago and am inching toward being fat adapted. If I didn't have my daily hits of coffee to look forward to, I'd probably jump off the nearest bridge.
There are studies that show Decaf coffee curbs hunger and does so better than caffeinated drinks like Tea and caffeinated coffee. Also, since there is a small trace amount of caffeine in decaf, people who are very sensitive to caffeine still feel the effects of it.
I drink usually only one cup of fresh coffee with cream every day, in the evenings I have English tea. I hydrate with water but my favourite is soda water of Perrier. The thought of soft drink is horrifying to me.
Caffeine messes with my heart rhythm. I predominantly drink decaf but lately I've added a half tsp to the pot because that little bit of Caffeine helps me not get sleepy.
It depends. It is not fine to drink coffee if coffee disrupts sleep, causes electrolyte issues, gut issues, or any other symptoms. I quit decaf (wasn't even leaded coffe!) because it made me tired all the time. Listen to your body.
a good quality cup of boiling hot black coffee is one of the small delights in this world....just behind a boiling hot cup of strong black tea. both with no add ins at all!
I thank God for you! I can give up carbs easy but I just don’t want to give up my coffee or the way I drink it which is a tbsp of butter and yes a splash of cream and a little pyure stevia. That might be so for some people, but not all. My coffee consumption does not affect my anxiety or sleep. Coffee relaxes me, especially when drunk in a social setting with friends or family. When alone, I find it grounding and it distracts from current anxiety.
I do decaf after the first real cup.
Thank you so much for being real. I was giving myself such a hard time for drinking 0 calorie Bang drinks for a ‘snack’ and felt so guilty. Water was always all I drank. It’s nice to know it’s ‘ok’ to have something else 😃
I have never had the link between concentration and dopamine explained before. That helps me understand why I crave chocolate so much when under pressure at work & unber standing is the first step in finding an effective way to manage then remove them problem.
For me.
It goes to show we are all unique. My body produces too much iron.( hemochromotosis) so my 2 cups of coffee a day do me no harm😊
@@hendrickadalm3294 I have hemachromatosis also hence regular blood checks. Strangely, since keto, I was actually anaemic 2 tests ago. and low level normal on the next. I'll keep you posted !
My mother-in-law drank several cups of coffee a day and loved her chocolates!! She lived to be 2 month shy of 98 years old.As the old saying goes I’ll drink to that

I wasn’t able to verbalize this but you stated it well. Since I love coffee and use it this way I make sure it’s as fresh as possible. It just makes me so happy. It’s also the same for me with carbonated water like Topo Chico or San Peligrino. It just calms me.
Add a pinch of salt, makes it perfect.
Will try that one day ! thanks
Salt cuts the bitterness of the coffee, try a lighter roast.
Julie Morgan yes...I find I need that these days
Julie Morgan Navy coffee!
I absolutely concur !! It solved my heart-arrhythmia ! And I usually drink about 4 small cups a day 😊😊
Love my coffee....never going to give it up.
I was told my acid reflux was because of coffee...I cut out my carbs (20mg per day) but kept the coffee and my reflux went away ...magic !!!
Thanks for sharing Doc
God bless

I LOVE my coffee, but have to drink decaf because regular coffee gives me palpitations. 😔
Try 1/2 caffeine works for me.
Yes, same here. AFIB actually. For me caffeine is a very dangerous drug. Magnesium seems to help a bit. B1 doesn't appear to help at all at least in my case.
@@zenos.5315 that's what I use. Drink a cup in the morning and a cup around 3pm. Use stevia and heavy cream. Have no problems
Coffee is life!
Thanks Doc, am a 57 yr old truck driver, have had a 'few' cups of coffee in my time. Every thing you said resounded perfectly with me.
You are so incredibly helpful!!! Thank you! Jesus bless you!
This came into my feed while I was drinking a cup of coffee. So glad I can finish drinking it.
Whew, I read this and thought it said "Coffee is a killer"
OMG. I'm so glad I found you! You makes so much sense and you explain things so well!
I so agree with you.I am 73 years young and it has been my serotonin release my adult life
Coffee is a little strong, but tea is better.
Doc Cywes,...charismatic, competent, amusable, likeable! Nothing to add! Greetings from germany.
Well said doc thanks for the advice.
My grandmother drank black coffee 18 hours a day all her life and lived to 96!
Just bookmarked this video for use in my daily meditation regimen.
I was worried when I read the title too!! Yikes, afraid you were going to suggest coffee needed to be avoided. But I really love it-in fact I’m enjoying a cup right now!!
I love this, thank you so much! I needed to hear that ✨🤩✨
Thanks for your balanced approach to😊 life.
GREAT message. Well said and explained. Thank u.
Decaf coffee is like vegetarian hamburger patties...
Nooo, not if you pay a bit more. The good stuff, freshly roasted and home ground is perfect..... Thoroughly enjoy it. Hits all the right spots.
@marysimon Without the estrogen that comes in the vegetarian burger.
Yea, = soy-ridden h. patties.
I LOVE vegan burgers with regular coffee. :)
Thank you music to my ears. I am carnivore since last October and drank still do my coffee. In fact i use 4 tbsp of heavy cream!!
I think this is were the quality of life kicks in. I personally only need one small espresso in the morning then I'm done for coffee for the day.
Great topic. Coffee is the most sprayed crop so one should try to drink organic coffee. There's some on Amazon.
Thanks ! Panicked when I saw coffee was a killer.
Diet Dr. Pepper FTW!!!
You’re great. I agree that just drinking water is terrible advice. It’s about the totality of what you’re doing to affect your health. Not dietary purity. Nobody is perfect. We should reward ourselves
Loving your channel
Coffee for the win! BUT, I still take a few days to a week off every month or so. Your caffeine sensitivity increases when you restart and it makes it more enjoyable. I also add L-theanine to combat the jittery affects you might get.
Only one word for this : Addiction
The addiction model I use is that an addiction is something you want to stop, but can't. When it comes to caffeine, I don't want to stop. You can argue that I am chemically dependent, but I'm also chemically dependent on oxygen and water.
Thank you so much for this video!
I love coffee. I usually have it black, no sugar or cream. But every now and then I add a little bit of cream and an egg yolk, absolutely delicious!
Oh my goodness! Thank you.
Excellent, thank you.
Thank You Dr Cywes finally someone saying coffee is good 🙏❤️☕️
Fact: I love coffee. I have been drinking coffee since I was a child because that is what we drank on cold winter days coming in from the farm. Decaf, full throttle or mild as long as it is good. And I love my afternoon teas. Thanks for the fully charged video.
I love my morning coffee with butter. A frother is a must!
I'm so happy watching this I feel as though I've drank my serotonin (coffeeee) and it's 1 AM. :) :) :)
Thanks doc. Now I can drink more coffee.
You are the best! Realistic and not a lot of high flatutin Crap! Love your channel.
Yes!! People say im crazy i drink coffee all day
This is very helpful.
YES! that did help, thank you.
❤ you are an amazing doctor thank you so much
sounds like he's justifying his Caffeine addiction.
Agree
Caffeine messes with my heart rhythm. I predominantly drink decaf but lately I've added a half tsp to the pot because that little bit of Caffeine helps me not get sleepy.
I love one great tasting cup of black coffee in the morning...love the taste and it's my morning ritual. So glad I can keep this treat.
4 small cups every day with whipped heavy cream (of course no sugar added). 2 drops of stevia as sweetener.
Coffee increases my heartbeat
Love love coffee ❤ mainly black, occasional double cream.
I thank God for you! I can give up carbs easy but I just don’t want to give up my coffee or the way I drink it which is a tbsp of butter and yes a splash of cream and a little pyure stevia. I like the richness the butter gives it and I’ve given up all the other things so I don’t see the butter as egregious. Now I could drink coffee all day sooo I try to limit the butter to just a cup a day. I guess it’s a guilty pleasure but I’m not ashamed of it if it’s the only one I have.
