This is the show you need the most. Alpine Valley '89 : Fire Dead in the zone !!! I drove all the way from New Hampshire to Wisconsin just for these 3 shows. A Fateful decision.:::
I see u got a lot of plp telling u to listen to Cornell ‘77 and I agree with them ‘77 was my fav year, year I was born but u should also check out Europe ‘72 both are great audio quality .
Great choices. I highly recommend March 27 1994 Morning Dew. Potentially the Grateful Dead's finest performance.
Polo😂 Welcome to the jam community!! Now you know why we are DEAD HEADS 😂!! There will never be another Jerry and long may he rein !! I've been to well over 120 Dead shows and they were all unbelievable !!! You should hit the Allman Brother ...Mountain Jam if you really want a long one!! Also check out Goose...and rhe Disco Biscuits...
Whoever recommended this understood the assignment!!
Bro…..shout out to whoever nudged him and recommend something from the 5/8/77 show
That’s truly a Jedi recommendation
Last time he reacted to a Dead tune I chimed in saying that show was top tier while also saying this song was a highlight (imo)
Yep May 8th and 9th both exactly what you should recommend to anyone new to The Dead. The whole trio 7th-9th. TMNS from either 7th or 9th is off the hook. And most versions its cut at the best part.
1/2 step>big river from 5/7 is tasty.
Clearly.
Indeed, they did!
This is unreal. I listened to the Grateful Dead for the first time watching your Franklins Tower reaction. I cannot believe I was sleeping on this band. I always thought they were different type of band. Glad I am finally onboard!!!!
Welcome. There's plenty of room on this bus and it's a long strange trip!
yes me too...Ive missed so much ...maybe a name change would help.....gretful to be alive!!!!!
The name Grateful Dead comes from The Tibetan Book of The Dead & has Deep Spiritual Meaning!
they were different. they are medicine, and they are the greatest american band there ever was. imho.
@@CharmanBamesberger-qr3yw no they changed their name from the wizards and Jerry found the new name in a dictionary
Polo: This is the longest solo I’ve ever heard on this channel
Grateful Dead: Hold my Dark Star 💫
HAHAHAH
Or a Playin’ 😂
Does it really matter which song they start with? 🪐🚀☄️👾✨💫 is always the destination!
LMAO!!!!
LMFAO!!!
Phil Lesh is just so insane on that bass.
"I wonder how many of you are dancing in your living room right now"
We ALL are!!
What a pleasure to see the rapture on your face as you listen to the Dead. I am a 73-year-old tried and true Deadhead and am loving you loving them!
Well, we love all Dead fans and we love them for that.
I absolutely love it too. I love his reactions to all the Dead songs he’s listened to, especially when he lets go and is completely Boy do I wish I was born when you were. My uncle Mike who I’m named after was a deadhead from the minute he heard them in 67 them all the way up to his passing and unfortunately I didn’t share the same passion for them when he was alive since I was pretty young when he passed but for the better part of the last decade they’ve been my #1 go to. I wish I could’ve seen Jerry
It's rapture!
My wife and I went on tour with Dead And Company this summer, attended 26 shows, and danced the whole night every night! 4 hour shows!
That smile is why we are deadheads♥️💙
❤
It is fun to watch people discover the Dead, to see their reaction the moment they realize it's jazz.
It's a fusion of jazz, rock,,blues and blue grass
Hop on the bus Polo, we're kind! We're just here to share the jams, deadheads are pretty generous, we just want everybody to hear this awesome band.
"Somewhere... in an alternate universe.... this solo is still going on."
Well...Sound waves do tend to travel. 😊
One cannot underestimate the impact the great Betty Cantor Jackson had on this stellar recording!! There is so much clarity and separation! Each player is so clearly heard! Lots of folks say this was The Dead’s best show ever. I’m not even sure it was the best show that month (Boston, Tuscaloosa AL, Buffalo!) , but that’s neither here nor there. I certainly think it’s one of the greatest sound mixes! (And I’ve heard a helluva lot of em!)
You have to picture yourself on a huge concern lawn with blanket, good friends, and this vibe....best day of your life...has been mine.
I love how Jerry sneaks up on you during the jam. He feeling it out at first and then let's loose. Absolute fire.
That's a Grateful Dead jam. It's one of the things that makes them so incredible. A lot of the jams are improvised.
Their jams are always improvised.
Some just turn out better than others.
And that's why they let recording devices in and are the most bootleged bands.
@@mr.knowitall6440 I was just gonna to say the same thing. They are all improvised.
"He's killin it". That's what Jerry does :)
the drummers, bill kreutzman and mickey hart, along with phil lesh on bass, make it all possible for jerry and bob to go off....such a soulful group of musicians who know each other so deeply on a musical level....nothing like a greatful dead concert. 50+ years for me. can't get enough.
This is amazing 😃
At 11:33 you begin to let the head bounce after you couldn't resist smiling, thats the power of Jerrys guitar. He will infect you. It becomes a sybiotic relationship as you feed off each other to reach new heights of joy, wonder, and amusement. Welcome to the fam. I suggest Eyes of the World, any version pre '75 really.
‘77 eyes are nasty though
Jerry never wants to come down from this solo. Amazing. Never repeated, always different and this is the headiest version ever.
This man just rinsed it and let it ride. Thought for sure he would interrupt more haha.
Respect
I've had that look on my face countless times!!!
It’s amazing how good that live recording sounds! Keep playing the live versions. That’s were the magic is. I love your open-mindedness and willingness! May God bless you!
Betty Cantor.
One of the best to ever do it, along with Charlie and Arielle.
If you know, you know.
The Betty Boards they call them.
Thanks for listening
Betty
That smile on your face midway through the song, is why we went to Dead shows. Welcome to the family.
Dancing In The Streets is an old song first made popular way back in the early 1960s by Motown hitmaker Martha & the Vandellas and was co-written by Marvin Gaye. The Dead started playing it when they were essentially a cover band before they found their own sound at the Acid Tests.
A cover is on Vintage Dead, the vinyl record. It was recorded at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco.
@@briangriffin5524 I used to have that album a long time ago.
@@markslupe7197I just found a copy not too long ago
6:25- "he's killing it"....
10 minutes later "longest solo of my life...shout out to that guy!"
The Dead are all about their live shows, and Cornell 5.8.77 is probably the best example of it! From the same album, listen to “Scarlett Begonias” followed by “Fire on the Mountain”. Often referred to as Scarlet Fire, it’s arguably the best live performance ever. The way they flow into eachother is wild, it’s so seamless you have to listen to both to get the whole picture
77 tour may be their Greatest
@@Mossb3rg206I’m partial to the fall 73 tour, but spring 77 is ridiculous❤
great show. i'm a sucker for 74-76
@@Sagitarria I’m a sucker for 72 Europe myself.
cornell is an amazing show- but for me nothing beats 8/27/72 oregon. the merle haggard remake of 'sing me back home' goes str8 to my soul. 🥀☠️🥀☠️🥀❤️🍄🦄
Love the look on your face about half way through when it really starts to click for you! Jerry is just gunslinging that solo from the hip, all improvised. Nothing else like it!
Gun slinging is the perfect word and this is his best
Shootout imo
Just couldn't get that smile off your face. Now you know why we all love the Grateful Dead so much. Welcome aboard the bus.
The “Loser” from this same show is really outstanding! You can feel the emotion of the character, through Jerry’s voice, and the desperation….”all that I am asking for is 10 gold dollars, I can pay you back with one good hand…” until his desperation hits its peak “cause I’ve got no chance of losing this time…” You’ve just gotta hear it!
Phil is going wild droppin bass bombs, Jerry is slingin' that jam like no one can, and the Mickey and Billy just keep it pushin through all that badassery.
It’s the piano just as much as it is Phil’s grooves….to me
Hammond organ
@@suethomas2675Keith’s not playing the organ on this
You are making a lot of people smile today! Thats what counts in this crazy world!
My man, you are DEFINITELY on the bus! This is the absolute holy grail of Dead shows. 5/8/77 🫶🏼 Do yourself a favor, take an evening to yourself, put this show on, turn it up loud and lose yourself for 3 1/2 hours. It will blow your fucking mind. The entire show is the same energy as this song. ⚡️💀⚡️
The music never stops. It’s a rainbow full of sound, calliopes, and clowns.
Us old deadheads love seeing people getting shown the light in the strangest of places (if you look at it right).
The bus has come by, getting on?
Always remember, these songs were made for dancing so stretching out a hot jam allowed us to twirl and swirl up a bunch of Joy ☮💟☯
Walked away from my phone during the height zone f the jam and came back and saw you smiling ear to ear just like I was as I walked up. That’s the sauce man! It takes you somewhere personal and makes you feel good. This is why so many of us sought out this feeling with the Dead on tour
Thank you for your thoughtful reactions to all kinds of music.
I went to a Grateful Dead concert and the song they played was great.
Holy Molly What a Jam! You dead if you wasn;t dancing!
you gotta hear more of cornell! the whole show is just peak
and know you will never hear this version played again..thats the magic, Baby!!!!
GD will Always Rule & be remembered ❤❤❤❤
Smokin’ jam. I saw that smile man! Jerry gives me goosebumps on this jam. Just close your eyes and cant keep your toes from tapping
This is my opinion, the Dead play really long solos to mess w the crowd (mostly on psychedelics). They go so far out to space you forget which song they are playing, then they bring it back and you feel like you are back home.... it is wildly comforting. Love your channel!
That's why I consider them the Only psychedelic band. For that exact reason. When you take LSD and listen to the Dead it is freakish what happens. It is like you have been let in on some weird secret that the entire universe has concocted and nobody is really supposed to know about it. It feels so right that it must be wrong. I have taken good amounts of psychedelics and listend to a wide variety of music, other groups have made psychedelic songs even long before LSD existed but that is the only type the Grateful Dead made.
I would never tell someone to take LSD but if you do and you've never listened to the Grateful Dead then you have never truly smiled
Hi thank you for the Grateful Dead tunes, welcome aboard the bus!
Eyes of the World. Winterland 74
"Shout out to that guy!" 🤣
We LOVE seeing the the expressions.
Thank you for playing Polo. I was smiling as much as you. I used to spend my vacations at Jam band festivals. Time and length are unimportant in the songs, just everyone vibing to the it. I’ve been in crowds of 20 to 30 thousand and there are no fights just peace and love. Well an maybe a little flower too. 🖖🏼
Still vacationing at Jam bands festivals. 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼
I'm still dancing to the Dead since 1970. Never will be a band like them ever again. Glad you're enjoying them.

Nothing brings me more joy than watching someone tap into Jerry's magic. Phil was droppin the bombs durning this one. Ahhhh the best memories ❤
Glad you are on the bus!. Caught 300+ shows including European tour 1990. Never the same show twice!.
That bass line bouncing like a ball of mercury is something to key in on here. Ear Candy 🎉
YES!!!! thank you sir... Live dead too, thanks for reacting to live dead, its the only way to go.
One of us! One of us!
Look at that smile. Welcome aboard.
Check out Grateful Dead "Eyes of the World" with Branford Marsalis. It is a bit jazzier version of the earlier performances. There are also some great earlier versions. With the Dead you may want to listen to multiple versions of a song to find the one that best speaks to you.
Your smile half way through, that joy, that's the Grateful Dead music. The song can be as long or as short as it should be in that moment, they just felt it out.
Barton Hall, Cornell 5-8-77 , I recommend any song from this show you just listened too, because it's considered one of the best shows ever. The thing I liked the most about the Grateful Dead scene was no matter who you were ,where you were from, you were Welcome Brother
💃🕺💃🕺💃🕺 at 5:30 in the am. 😎
I Second That Emotion... 🤪
It’s the best show bc it never took place ;)
@@sigsour5421 lol
Live dead mixed with LSD will have you forgetting what song they are playing then punch you back to reality when they break back into the main chorus. Their music gives you the ultimate highs and lows mixed all together into one track. Each show, their inflection and tempo on the song will have you think about the song in a different light. One More Saturday Night for example, I thought was a party song then I saw the Wolf sing it in a sadder tone and slower and I thought of that song as if he just had to get through one more Saturday night and it changed to just getting through life and he really didnt want to have a party / show one on one more night. Just some of their magic as their lyrics change meaning the more you listen to them or apply them to your life.
Nothing left to do but smile smile smile 😁
The Dead were so open with their music they had a recording section where fans were encouraged to bring their own recordings equipment to record the shows. I think you can find recordings of every show they did since 1970. I think some of their earlier shows may have been lost.
Rip Jerry, I'll always love ya man
Perhaps an explanation for a aspiring deadhead: IT superficially appears to be a Jerry solo, but is technically a JAM with the band collectively making music
The stars in your eyes say it all!!!
Many Dead songs are like a musical journey down a hallway. The Dead are playing the main song in the Grand Ballroom and as you walk down the hall, other bands are playing their own sound that somehow blends with the Dead sound in the background. Truly genius!
Yes I was dancing and singing ...I never knew they were such a lively band hense the name!!!!!....party music Ive danced to them many a time and not known they were gretful dead ...i thought they were a heavy rock band .......
Love love this. I am so enjoying listening and dancing in my bedroom, also watching you enjoy this too. It’s magic really. I was in such a bad mood before listening and my day just got lighter! Thanks so much and keep the jams coming!
The way I look at it, the first 5:45 minutes is all about setting up the groove, out in the open, surrounded by forests...and then Jerry invites us to explore the forest with him...and he does this by travelling through the forest like a bird, in and out and up and down and around, slow and fast, always avoiding running into anything...and you are on his back riding with him, thinking "holy shxxt!" this is fxxckin' amazaing...and always flying below the canopy...and just when you think its over and your safe, he starts to take you above the canopy (10:00) and into the open sky and you're like 'NFWay!!!... and once you realize how beautiful it is you just give in to the trust and enjoy the view from up there before the he takes you back home...
Nice job reacting to a track from Cornell, definitely one of the best live shows they ever played. The whole concert is preserved in the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress, classified as a significant piece of American cultural heritage!
Perfect song pick to explore Phil Lesh's bass a little more. You mentioned enjoying his contribution to Franklin's Tower, he's all over the place. One thing that's hard to digest for a lot of folks is the live vocals with no studio touch ups. Plus these guys would play improvised sets, they had hundreds of songs, and they enjoyed changing their head anyway they could... All of these factors led to a lot of forgotten lyrics, and vocal mis-ques. We deadheads are very forgiving in this area. We learn early on to tolerate the vocal crashes because they always made up for it with the solos/jams... And when the vocals were on, oh boy!👍🏽
Somebody get this man a Tye Dye!
Love It!!!!!
Welcome Brother!
☠️❤️❤️❤️☠️
Yep.....I was dancing to this....whilst cooking dinner....👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Disco funk dance party for sure
Hey Polo. Jerry Garcia's seamlessness and musical genius is not to be matched. There are literally thousands of their recordings that will shock you with their greatness.
Jerry Garcia is the Master.
Young people, please don't let these recordings of the Grateful Dead disappear into obsoletion. Listen and pass it down.
Solos are long becuase 75% of what they do is improvised. It was the birth of what is called " Space Jam" carried on by Phish and others. They start a song then improvise eventually coming back to the head ( on every song).
BTW hope you realize this is a cover of a classic Motown track ( though of course completely original version). I'm not even big Dead fan but most respect the improvisational element.
One day you should play the whole show - Cornell ‘77 (5/8/77). The album play the whole show in order. Plenty of ups and downs. A whole show is the way to go.
You want chills? Morning Dew from Europe 72.
Your face says it all 🙏
Jerry is it. They have liner jams. Shakedown Street is my favorite
Welcome to the Grateful Dead experience!
Great reaction! It's all a monster jam. Phil Lesh on Bass. I'm dancing in my chair... LOL
If you like, keep listening.... In the Grateful Dead you will find high quality examples of funk, jazz, folk, country and balls to walls rocknroll. Anything from 4 to 40 minutes long. Recommendations are tough bc it depends on your likes/moods and the endless variations in how tunes arranged and played through the years.
Terrapin Station on album I think should be his next choice. So different. It is orchestral. I believe it is their best studio song. This is progressive rock at its finest. Another long song but he will think it is too short.
The Skull and Roses album still stands out as the most eclectic collection of songs, in my opinion. You have originals, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Willie Dixon and Kris Kristofferson.
That bass-line by Phil got u in the zone, nevermind Bobby flubbing his line in this one, is like that scratch you put on your old man's prized vinyl that one time. Thanks for the inspiration to try new things. That's what the dead is all about. Read up on Donna G, she's on a lot of the wrecking crew and Elvis and muscle shoals AL. Bring the education on Polo.Sub for life.
The phil zone
Cornell 1977 was my first Grateful Dead concert. What an intro! I distinctly remember being thoroughly entranced with this song. Towards the end of the song when they go back to the lyrics a smile came on to my face and I realized what the fuss was all about.
While hallucinating Grateful dead music talks to you the lyrics and instruments come to life. It's a religious experience in a way. Back in the day the band and audience would merge into one organism. At least that was my experience.
At around 13 minutes, you start to get this "oh, this is groovy" look in your eye and I could totally envision you dancing stage-side, totally tye-dyed.
That smile of true enjoyment! Priceless....thank you😊
the reason the solo is so long is because the dancing in the crowd is jumping and Jerry ain't gonna stop it until the kids get tired then they will shift gears and get everyone jumping with a burst of new energy.
I love Jerry and the way he plays that guitar
When I see the smile slowly creep upon your face....yeah something profound....
And it's still going!
Just get up and dance, dude! You know you want to! ❤
Cornell 77 is one of their best concert recordings. Great energy, great set list. Definitely recommend listening to the rest of the show
the look on your face makes me smile, smile, smile.
Zoned out so hard on that first long stretch I forgot I was watching a reaction video until your voice scared me 🤘
It's so amazing how the Grateful Dead have such a trancy/hypnotic sound to them. Sounds so good!
Scarlet Begonias into Fire on the Mountain from Cornell 1977. Uncle John's Band. Shakedown Street. Althea. Cassidy. Eyes of the World. Always live versions over studio. 1977 was a great year for live dead.
All u can do is smile, smile, smile!
It's dancing from the crowd that let these songs go as long as they do...
Makes me happy seeing the Dead put a smile on your face! Enjoy!
Love watching you enjoy Jehovah's Favorite Choir" a " Band Beyond Descrition" Keep on listening...❤
dancin',dancin', dancin' in my seat....
Grateful Dead are legendary fans.....LEGENDARY MY MAN
