this guy knows the software and radio very well best explanation on the internet about the settings of ic 7300,fldigi and computer . i learned so much thank you . he makes it so easy
Great subject Tom..... As you’ve done throughout your A to Z series, this video will certainly help people set up the most commonly used digital software, by showing those areas in the configuration settings of the software that have to be changed to work with the IC7300. I’ve found that keeping my 7300 settings at 50%, and varying the Windows computer audio settings depending on the software works well too.
Hi, Tom. Great presentation. You have covered everything needed for digital mode transmission. In weak signal condition, with 'static crashes', setting AGC to 'Fast' may improve weak signal's reception. Looking forward fo the next video. :) Thank you, Bahathir 9W2GNU, 73.
I remember when FT8 mode came out and it was GREAT but after couple hundred contacts I became bored since I wasn't doing anything except clicking the mouse lol WSJT is great for 2M and 6M MS and I really like running WSPR mode with 1 watt or less. TNX 4 all ur videos! 73 N8AUM
I too have mixed feelings about FT8. It is an amazing mode and it has really helped to level the playing field between super stations and modest stations for getting contacts with rare countries, DXpeditions, etc. Yet it does feel a little too “automatic” for me, like my computer and rig are doing all the work and I am little more than an observer. Of course, that is the beauty of this hobby; there are almost infinite combinations of modes, bands and equipment to choose from and we are all free to pick the ones we like. I hope to dabble a little bit with all of them eventually. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. Thank you for the kind words. 73, Tom
JS8CALL you can talk to them. It uses the same type of low power. It also has where you can leave a message on someone's station for someone that you can't talk to but the other station can talk to them. JS8CALL is much better and it can be used for Winter Field Day!
I have seen a couple videos about JS8CALL and I have read a little about it. It does look pretty nice. It’s on my list of modes to try, but I haven’t made the time yet.
Tom, I really appreciate your videos and this one got me running with wsjtx on 20M. After I bring wsjtx down my 7300 on that band will not go back into standard USB. I can only get it into LSB and USB-D. I'm not sure what's going on and if it is a problem. I phone seems to be receiving fine on USB. Do you have any ideas? Thanks.
Hi Oldin. Glad you’re enjoying them. Several people in our local club have tried JS8-Call. I’ve been meaning to play around with it, but I just haven’t been able to get to it yet.
Hi Tom... I’m thinking these settings would probably apply to my IC 7610. I need to back off my alc just a tad according to the videos. Is there any way to know if you’re flat topping by watching your signal from another SDR receiver on the internet? Keep up the great work. I really enjoy your videos. They’re very clear, educational and easy to listen to... de Fred KE0EF
Hi Fred. First, thank you for the kind words. A good friend has a 7610. I don’t really have any experience with it, but I do believe the settings and functions for transmit audio with data are pretty similar to the 7300. Watching our signal on another receiver is a very good way to check your signal quality. If you’re using an SDR from the internet, you’d just want to pick one that is pretty close to you so you can get a strong enough signal to eliminate atmospheric or local noise. If it’s an SDR with a spectrum display, one good indication if you’re starting to distort is that you will see the bandwidth of your signal start to increase. So, for example, if you’re transmitting a RTTY signal, with the standard 170Hz shift, your bandwidth shouldn’t be much more than about 250Hz. If you increase the audio level enough to start distorting, you’ll see the signal widening out, possibly with some splatter peaks well away from the main signal. So, you would want to back off the audio level a little bit once you started seeing that. Hope this helps. 73, Tom WA2IVD
Hi Tom, This is SV1SLB. We both have the same rig and I have watched carefully some of your videos. They sure are a GREAT HELP for us 7300 enthousiasts. 73 from Greece, hope to see you on the air. I do have a question though. I have saved my configuration for FT8 and for Voice communication in seperate files on my SD card. That is because if I am using FT8 and then try to communicate with voice, there is no modulation AT ALL. So, every time I swich from FT8 to voice, I always have to load the other settings, so everything goes fine. Is this common to you too?
Hi. Sorry for such a late reply. I missed your comment earlier. When you switch back to voice are you forgetting to take the rig out of Data mode? (Display says USB-D - or LSB-D). It normally won’t take audio from the mic in data mode. You have to touch the mode LSB/USB. Then tough the Data button on the pop up menu to toggle it off
@@HamRadioA2Z Thanks for the reply, but I do think that there are some other parameters that must be altered for voice operation too! Not only the DATA mode on the USB or LSB mode.
Hi Tom another great Vlog I’m following you as I have got the IC 7300 back end of September still boxed but not been on air for 14/15 years and it’s all new to me. Tom have covered psk or D-star on any Vlogs ? as I find you easy to follow keep up the great work. Terry G7wrs
Hi Terry. Thank you for the kind words. I haven’t covered PSK specifically or D-Star. Most of these last 2 videos should apply to PSK. I’m thinking about doing a similar series on the 9700 when I finish this series. Of course, I’ll have to get a 9700 in order to do that. Seems like a good excuse to me. :-). That radio has D-Star, so that would be part of it. I’ve had at least one other request to do something specifically about digital modes and digital software. So, maybe I’ll do something along those lines. 73, Tom
WSJT-X automatically creates files WSJT.log and also a .adi log file. Under the File menu you will see an option to “Open Log Directory”. You’ll find those files there. Then you can copy them wherever you like. Also under the File menu is an “Export Carrillo Log” option. That will let you save the exported log wherever you want. In the configuration settings under the Reporting tab you can set WSJT-X up to send logged contacts to other logging programs like N1MM, N3FJP, etc. You can find instructions for how to setup the reporting in the documentation for those logging programs. 73, Tom
hey Tom I am trying to get my IC 7300 to work on EchoLink I Set up the driver for the 7300 its working fine I guess no errors Set up the Echolink KG5CUO-L and got it connected to Echolink and it is Id-ing every 10 min So that part is working now I need to figure out how to here and talk back threw my radio to the software any ideas Please message me and let me know. KG5CUO 73
Hi. I use Echolink, but I have not set up one of my own radios as a simplex link. I assume that is what you’re doing. When you say it is ID-ing, does this mean that the radio is transmitting and you can hear it transmitting the ID? If that’s the case, it sounds like you’re most of the way there. You must have the PTT and audio from the PC to the radio setup properly for that much to work. What exactly isn’t working?
Its Idling by moris code with the computer but it is not sending voice over the computer to the software if you press the key on the mic on the radio However I got it set up to here the radio threw the computer by the usb connected to the radio but I am trying to use the mic on the radio to talk with and if they connect to the node they can talk threw my link on 28,400.00

Need to learn more about FT8
Change your scroll rate (N Avg) from 3 to 1 for a faster waterfall scroll.
If you want to chat using the FT8 protocol, have a look at the JS8Call app.
