    Can you make purchasing an expensive eBike pay for itself? You can if you stopped having a car. But to be less extreme, as long as you displace enough miles driven in your car, you can make it pay for itself.
    Less cost on fuel, maintenance and depreciation on your car goes directly towards the eBike initial upfront cost. Used heavily, it only takes 2-5 months to break even. But there are pros and cons to using an eBike and having a bike friendly neighborhood really goes a long way.
    Even if you do not use it as a commuter, using it recreationally, when ever you have time, it's sunny, or you feel like it, you can slowly displace miles in your car and every mile saves around $0.50 in costs from your car. So having one around, can definitely save you more over the long run.

    My coworker started biking to work to save money and health reason. Within 3 months he got hit by a car and his wife put an end to it. Our city is not bike friendly, some areas don’t even have pedestrian sidewalks.

      My h Finnish husband did that for 2 years in the bay area Fremont and Belmont to San Mateo and San Carlos to get to google bus stops. I was scared for him but we tried to save money by not having more than 1 car. Luckily we both got to work remotely and never needed to bike in Cali after that. Even with driving I limit it to once a week because the traffic and road rages are crazy in California. Now I live in Finland and we don’t have cars. We walk and bike everywhere to the grocery stores, hospitals, libraries, restaurants, kid’s school, work, sports and hobbies for my kid. Dedicated bike lane away from car tucked in the forest and seaside. We are not inhaling in pollutants.

    I would take this with a grain of salt when it comes to trying to replace your car outright; I've been using both for years now. There is considerable utility for having a car including hauling equipment, driving other people besides yourself, and when there is freezing or harsh weather (esp with you are not well) you will be wanting a car that can heat and cool. In addition, there is safety considerations you must understand that goes with an ebike including locking your bike, charging, and wearing a helmet that will add inconvenience. With that said, personally I like having an e-bike as an addition for those times for small errands and fun, but do not think it can replace your normal 4-wheel commuter.

    Here in Finland the bike lanes are awayyyyy from cars, in forest and seaside. I can bike anywhere in the entire city. Dedicated side walks also away from cars and traffic. ❤Vaasa Finland but basically anywhere in Finland. I would say better than Amsterdam (next to cars even though they have dedicated bike lanes) and better than Belgium. People here also bike during winter months by wearing helmets with face shields and wipers for the snow/rain😂

    I can attest to ebike practicality. Having been commuting on ebikes to work and grocery since spring 2021, it works! Though a lot a lot of learning curve. Commuting between 15-25 mph is the most ideal speed. Get quality bike poncho, rain shoe cover and rain pants and some tools, portable pumps and be ready if you ride year round.

    I've been riding my ebike for almost two years, and yes I too have been hit. I still ride in the bike lane next to cars since thats where I'm supposed to be legally speaking. In my experience drivers are more scared of me than I am of them. I wonder, is bike safety not taught in school anymore? Additionally, is sharing the road with bikes taught in drivers ed anymore?

    I bought an ebike last year in an attempt to save cost for my trips to the grocery store and other errands. It turns out that I didn't use it much for that, and mainly used it for fun. The reason was primarily because I didn't want to get it stolen. So if your intent is to save $$, well it didn't work for me. But I do have a lot of fun riding it around.

    Nice foray into eBikes. Though for not much more you can make/models that hit 20 MPH with assist, and are equipped with hydraulic brakes. More of them claiming UL listing.
    The best routes for bike/ebike is the greenways or multi-use paths some cities built into their transit network.

    I do a 10 mile commute with an escooter and an ebike to work. I dont have a car and dont want one so for me it was actually more of an alternative to public transport and not having to deal with that. Ive put around 1.6k miles between them mostly doing this commute. I have almost gotten hit a few times in spite of the fact that I would call 90% of my commute pretty safe. However i think of it as being a bit of a fallacy to consider riding a bike to be a danger when encountering this situation because when most people are driving a car and have close calls no one ever thinks that if they were just riding a bus instead that woudn't have happened even though from a saftey perspective this is absolutely the case.

    Re dedicated bike lanes: My Central Cal farming town recently eliminated 2 lanes of our 4 lane main artery thru town and used the extra space to create a center turn lane (no one uses) and bike lanes on either side (which do not meet the 3' clearance law). Congestion went up because now each direction of traffic is now all one one lane, making it impossible for traffic to cross. Unless traffic is midnight off peak, turning requires a right turn into traffic and going down to the next block for a u-turn for intended left direction or and least going around the block to get back to an original straight across crossing. I think what is happening is that cities are lacking basic funds for road maintenance so they tap into bike lane money and are probably allowed using bike lane funds for general upgrades so long as they buy a few gallons of paint in order to paint bike lane stripes. Foster City (among others) uses hundreds of gallons of paint in order to paint the entire width of the bike lane green. Judging from the scuff marks, it doesn't keep the cars out. Biking is not safe. Traveling with the traffic flow gives no chance of looking behind you when a car gets in your lane.

    • @BeatTheBush

      They just need a dedicated narrow biking STREET straight through a city. Or may have a cement divider but you still get the smog.

    • @mikethedriver5673
      @mikethedriver5673 8 місяців тому

      Mirrors for bikes can be had off Amazon... And honestly from what you said the thing making biking dangerous isn't the bikes it's the cars... So if you wanted to make things safer the way to do it would be by taking conveniences away from car drivers. Fatal accidents become very rare when surrounding cars are going slower speeds so and less cars in a given space make it less likely for cars to hit you. So more congestion doesn't necessarily go against the goal.
