Dr. John Walton (Ph.D. Hebrew Union College) has taught for many years at Wheaton College after twenty years on the faculty of Moody Bible Institute. He has published major commentaries on Genesis and Job in the NIVAC series. His Old Testament textbook, A Survey of the Old Testament, is used in colleges across the country. He has also shaped the thinking of Christians in the area of ancient Near Eastern backgrounds in his IVP Background Commentary and the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary and more recently his books: Lost World of Scripture (IVP), Genesis 1 as Ancient Cosmology (Eisenbrauns), Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament (Baker) and many others. Thank you, Sir. The category of “justice” is problematic … but it is treasured and implied into supreme status in many Christian teachings. Grace is not just, neither is God. God is not subject to justice 12:17 thank heavens.
Dr Walton, I really enjoy your insights into the book of Job and rest of the Old Testament!
To me, the book of Job is about God’s wisdom in condemning Lucifer for his rebellion. If a mere mortal can maintain his faith and belief in God’s wisdom and love, under the worst of situations, then Lucifer has no excuse, since he had everything, before the face of God, and nothing was refused to him. He lived in the Holy of Holies, yet he rejected the love of God and accused Him of unfairness. When we live in faith under the worst of suffering and pain, we put the nail in the coffin of the Accuser who has no excuse for his rebellion.
True pearls of wisdom from the spirit of God.
And that is why there is NO chance at redemption for rebellious angels. They existed in the beautiful perfection of Heaven with the Creator, but they chose to throw it all away for cheap pleasure with human women. Plus their deliberate teaching of prohibited knowledge,(Book of Enoch) to humans like war & dark arts to sink humans deeper into sin, double sealed their doom.
This is an outstanding introduction to Job. Thank you very much.

Interestingly, there is a breakthrough understanding of the Book of Job. Read the novel "Where Do We Go Now, LORD? - Burke." Ask yourself... are church and seminary leaders open to higher ground? No? Not often? Well, Moses was. Enjoy the breakthroughs!

The book still makes no sense. Why is Job’s motivation questionable when it’s stated right at the beginning that he is blameless? If Job is blameless, then his motivation for serving God is genuine. The test of suffering that Job undergoes is completely unnecessary as no new insight is gained from the test.

It’s not a test. It’s not for insight.
God says Job is blameless. Satan disagrees, saying Job's motivation is not pure. Take away Job's stuff and Job will not serve you (God) anymore.
The ensuing trial reveals to everyone what God already knew- Job is indeed blameless. It is revealed to the heavenly council and to Job's wife and friends that people can really serve God just for His own sake and not for the rewards He gives.
And, Job learns a good deal about God and His ways. He learns the reasons for suffering may be over his head, but the purposes of suffering lead us to trust God's wisdom anyway.
Job also learns that life does not fit neatly into the simplistic paradigm he or his friends thought it did- sometimes the good suffer and the wicked prosper but, in the end, God will sort it all out.
@@LandscapeDallas So you think the best way for Job to 'learn' something is to have his children murdered? God could not find another way to 'teach' Job something without murdering his children? In the end God didn't sort it out. Job's dead children remained dead. And why does God feel the need to prove anything to anyone? Why does God not have a sense of responsibility and say to Satan, "listen, buddy, I couldn't care less about what you think, Job is my friend and I love him and I will protect him and his children."?
@@pedjazoo Instead of laying your sense of "morality" on God and questioning why He did not act how you think He should, try listening without YOUR "morality"filter to learn the real lessons.
Walton seems to have interpretation problems every time he teaches the OT. I used to like him, not any more. His 'lost' books are plain lost and mired in metaphysical, contradictory, confusing nonsense that smacks more of modern day Gnosticism.
