They must be preparing to release something big really soon. They are cleaning up the code, and the art to save RAM and storage. (Note there are less moving parts, and each podium has only one state). It's probably for the plant leveling system. Hopefully that comes in soon.
New mini games and plants. Looks like there will be an Arcade Machine mode that will have mini games from the original PvZ like vasebreaker and walnut bowling plus a Pac-Man-like game only with the Chomper plant. I'd prefer additional levels to the existing worlds or new worlds, but...this sounds mighty fun and I can't wait.
So this is why they removed the old old awesome maps (the ones with the star system). More code, makes sense I guess but I’m shocked that the Chinese version got all the way to the lost city with the giant maps and the international couldn’t even get to far future with the olds maps

I really hate it that they removed everything that made this game *special* I know it’s been like 2 years and people get over the fact, but i’ve supported PvZ all the way! I would accept it for getting more space just for the music, gargantuar statues and boss podiums.

The worlds are in order for difficulty , the "album" is not a terrible idea , I don't care if they changed the gargantuars' statues , I don't care if they changed the Zomboss' statues.

Basically all the holograms of the bandaged red skull are gone with the podium a bit smaller. This is to free up data for some of the new mini games that are coming I'm guessing, judging by the official PvZ2 wiki.
They all look kind of bland now...I mean they used to have character and changed depending on if the level was opened,locked, or beaten. These just look bland. I mean they got rid the gargantuar statues too so It makes sense to change Zomboss's levels but wow. The only one I approve of is Jurassic Marsh because its the same but better in my opinion. The only other one I may approve of is Lost City but that one is so bland that it can only get better.
