Bayankhongor aimag is located in southwestern Mongolia, across the Gobi Khangai region, covering the foothills of the Khangai Mountains, the Gobi Altai Mountains, and the Altai Trans-Gobi. Therefore, the area has a combination of mountains and valleys. The highest point in the area is Ikh Bogd Mountain, which is 3,957 m high at the top of the Gobi Altai mountain range, and the lowest point is 750 m high in the Trans-Altai Gobi. There are the Great Altai Gobi, such as the Zeeren Valley and the Nomin Gobi. In 1957, a strong earthquake shook the Gobi-Altai Mountains, causing a massive fault of about 300 km behind Ikhbogd and Bayantsagaan. Coal, gold and construction materials are abundant in Bayankhongor aimag. It has large rivers such as Baidrag and Tui, and large lakes such as Buuntsagaan, Orog Lake and Khukh Lake. There are also Shargaljuut hot springs with temperatures up to 95 degrees Celsius, Uukheg hot springs, Khuremt hot springs, Khaliut hot springs and Urguut hot springs. In the northern part of Bayankhongor aimag, there is black mountain soil and local soil, in the middle part, steppe brown soil, and in the southern part, Gobi gray soil.
