  • God has a unique plan and a purpose for each of us, His creation. Finding and fulfilling that purpose will bring us wonderful peace.

    When my daughter, Mary, was just a small child, she was asked to perform for a PTA talent contest. This is her experience exactly as she wrote it in her seven-year-old script.
    “What Can I Be?”
    “I was practicing the piano one day, and it made me cry because it was so bad. Then I decided to practice ballet, and it made me cry more; it was bad, too. So then I decided to draw a picture because I knew I could do that good, but it was horrid. Of course it made me cry.
    “Then my little three-year-old brother came up, and I said, ‘Duffy, what can I be? What can I be? I can’t be a piano player or an artist or a ballet girl. What can I be?’ He came up to me and whispered, ‘You can be my sister.’”
    In an important moment, those five simple words changed the perspective and comforted the heart of a very anxious child. Life became better right on the spot, and as always, tomorrow was a brighter day.
    All of us face those questions about our role, our purpose, our course in life-and we face them long after we are children. I visit with enough of you (and I remember our own university years well enough) to know that many of you, perhaps most of you, have occasions when you feel off-balance or defeated-at least temporarily. And we ask, ‘What will I be, when will I graduate, whom will I marry, what is my future, how will I make a living, can I make a contribution?”-in short, “What can I be?”
    Take heart if you are still asking yourselves such questions, because we all do. I do. We should concern ourselves with our fundamental purposes in life. Surely every philosopher past and present agrees that, important as they are, food and shelter are not enough. We want to know what’s next. Where is the meaning? What is my purpose?
    When asking these questions, I have found it extremely reassuring to remember that one of the most important and fundamental truths taught in the scriptures and in the temple is that “Every living thing shall fill the measure of its creation.”...

    I love her like an endeared mother. She is someone I look up to but she is no longer with us and I am sad that she is gone. I really appreciate this talk at this very moment in my life. She is an angel mother. 💗

    GREAT reminder! The devil wants us to COMPARE ourselves to OTHER people's journies rather than focus on our own DIVINE POTENTIAL💃🏻
    THANK YOU Sister Holland for bringing our Savior's perspective into the forefront of our focus! Brother Holland was blessed with THE BEST💜💞
    Love you sister!!!

    This was also an answer to prayer and fasting. How to fill the measure of creation. Knowing your mission is " different distinct and divine." Thanks Sister Holland, and the spirit.

    Thank you. This reminded of so many lessons that my Mother taught me from the tapestries that hung in her home. It may look messy on the one side, but the Lord creates something beautiful on the reverse side if we allow Him. I keep trying :-) Love to Motherhood.

    “The very delays and denials that we worry about most, the very differences from each other that trouble our self esteem, are the differences and delays that are the very best for our happiness and our fulfillment.”

    I am so grateful for her multiple uses of Heavenly Parents rather than just Heavenly Father (she even corrected herself one of these times). I long for the day when we will embrace our doctrine of Heavenly Mother and have conference talks and curriculum where we include our Mother when talking about Their Plan, Their Love, Their Son, and returning home to Them. Until then it is something I pray for daily. 🙏🏻
    It’s crazy to think this was over 35 years ago and we still haven’t embraced this doctrine. I encourage anyone reading this comment who feels the tug to start including our Mother when talking about Heavenly Father to do so. I know that once I started doing so my life was blessed.

      Thank you, I believe this is true. It is sacred to acknowledge her. I love that you made clear that we come from Heavenly Parents. Something all other "Christians" consider blasphemy.

    “How does one fill the measure of his or her creation? By thrusting in a sickle, and reaping with all our strength and by rejoicing in our uniqueness and in our difference. To be all that you can be your only assignment is #1) to cherish your course and savor your own distinctiveness #2) to shut out conflicting voices and listen to the voice within, which is God telling you who you are and what you will be and #3) to free yourself from the love of position or profession or the approval of men by remembering that what God really wants us to be is someone’s sister, someone’s brother and someone’s friend.”

    I’m 61 and again wondering what is my purpose and path? Living close to the spirit and staying active in church is my baseline. This talk helps. I need to stay the course and have faith. It will all work out ❤️✨

    "The Weaver" (also known as the tapestry poem) by Grant Colfax Tullar has at times been a tear-jerker for me:
    "My life is but a weaving
    Between my God and me.
    I cannot choose the colors
    He weaveth steadily.
    "Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow;
    And I in foolish pride
    Forget He sees the upper
    And I the underside."
    "Not ’til the loom is silent
    And the shuttles cease to fly
    Will God unroll the canvas
    And reveal the reason why."
    "The dark threads are as needful In the weaver’s skillful hand As the threads of gold and silver In the pattern He has planned."
    "He knows, He loves, He cares;
    Nothing this truth can dim.
    He gives the very best to those
    Who leave the choice to Him."
