As a dark haired young girl, I smiled a little crooked smile like this young girl of whom this young soldier liked. Later as an older youth my smile was upside down as Natives of North America, and their descendants sometimes "smile" for reasons we live and see. Today my smile is good, for love, laughter, and good of mankind kindness and for our Lord God's consistently being Himself, the good One True God. However, at times my eyes still tear. Many call "where(?)" home.
[Verse 1] In the little town where I grew up My childhood came and went Was a dark-haired girl with a crooked smile With whom my days were often spent And I never gave much thanks to luck When we'd count the stars at night But at 14 years, the war broke out And they shipped me off to fight I felt a taste of honor Until it finally hit me why I'm too poor to dodge and to young to vote But I ain't too young to die That night, I wept in darkness Alone and on my knees Clenched my hands as hard as they could squeeze [Verse 2] I'd never even kissed that girl And I'd never fired a gun And I always thought you couldn't be a man until the age of 21 Seems the only thing I knew for sure Is that they wouldn't take what's mine So I set my sights on anything that stepped across the line And the first time that I killed I man I felt it in my chest And many nights I saw his face Until it blurred in with the rest I felt no trace of honor When it finally came with ease Instead I knelt down in the mud and begged him please [Chorus] Take me home to see my mother Take me home, away from here Don't let me die so young and broken And surrounded by the smell of death and fear [Verse 3] I lost count along the way Of the ones I put in graves But everyone took a little more from a heart I couldn't save And all the things I did out there Were the furthest thing from law So I 'd scream myself awake most nights Or relive the things I saw And if I could have just one last prayer Then the last thing that I'd see Would be the dark-haired girl with a crooked smile As she waved goodbye to me But I never had much luck with prayers I did even worse with pleas So I'll be god damned if I die here on my knees [Chorus] I'm going home to see my mother I'm going home, away from here I ain't gonna die alone and broken Or forsaken under skies full of despair
Beautiful and heartfelt song from the point of view of a young Confederate conscript drafted towards the end of the Civil War when the South became desperate for any fighting men. The "line" mentioned in the song is the Mason Dixon line, which separated the Union from the Confederate states.
I'm fairly certain that he was writing about the Vietnam war because of the voting reference and when he said "I always thought I couldn't be a man until the age of 21"
@@ineszea3709 That really makes sense too, as from the lyrics you can literally see a young boy growing up in idyllic and innocent rural America of the 1960s suddenly thrust into a war devoid of mercy or rancor. US patrols in Nam also erected "lines" around their camps consisting of seismic intrusion detectors and Claymore mines to try to stop the VC from getting through when the patrols were sleeping. For a lot of guys pulling watch on the perimeters, the crackling static of the seismic detectors would be the last sound they hear before the VC opened fire during their night ambushes.
I think really it could sorta be almost any war in human history. Sure, the music and accent make us think of an American soldier - but the broad-strokes themes of the lyrics could be a German WW1 soldier, or even (with some tweaking) some Bulgarian peasant in a medieval campaign, or almost anything in between.
@@brendancuffe4671 I am kind of certain that a "Bulgarian on a medieval campaign" didn't have guns though... And societies at that time had no voting. This song may apply to war in general, but it is a product of, and covers an era from the 1860s onward.
@@BlueSkyCountry for sure. But the general themes, the emotional journey of the narrator's life transcend the specific politics or technology at play. Of course a Bulgarian medieval soldier didn't have voting or guns - but it's easy to imagine them with a life story that resembles this song in the most important ways. I think focusing on which specific war the narrator fought in is missing the most powerful aspect of the song.
*A young Confederate about to be executed slowly draws the 1849 pocket revolver from behind his back while the Union soldiers in front of him argue about loot...
Mistakes in the lyrics. Let me correct them: 1) "But at 14, years of war broke out..." 2) "So I screamed myself awake most night and relived* the things I saw"
@@supremecaffeine2633 So did my husband. Lied about his age, signed his parents name and went off to war with his 1st cousin on the buddy system. 1st of the 508 Infantry, 82nd Airbourne. There were many young boys that had broken the law during that time also. When they went to court for their sentencing, the Judges would give them the choice of 5 years jail time or to join the Military. Most, joined the Military. They were sent to Vietnam. So it could in fact, be Vietnam but most likely the Civil War. Who knows and frankly, It's stupid to argue the facts. Go read your history unless you are over 70 yrs old, CS.

[Verse 1]
In the little town where I grew up
My childhood came and went
Was a dark-haired girl with a crooked smile
With whom my days were often spent
And I never gave much thanks to luck
When we'd count the stars at night
But at 14 years, the war broke out
And they shipped me off to fight
I felt a taste of honor
Until it finally hit me why
I'm too poor to dodge and to young to vote
But I ain't too young to die
That night, I wept in darkness
Alone and on my knees
Clenched my hands as hard as they could squeeze
[Verse 2]
I'd never even kissed that girl
And I'd never fired a gun
And I always thought you couldn't be a man until the age of 21
Seems the only thing I knew for sure
Is that they wouldn't take what's mine
So I set my sights on anything that stepped across the line
And the first time that I killed I man
I felt it in my chest
And many nights I saw his face
Until it blurred in with the rest
I felt no trace of honor
When it finally came with ease
Instead I knelt down in the mud and begged him please
[Chorus]
Take me home to see my mother
Take me home, away from here
Don't let me die so young and broken
And surrounded by the smell of death and fear
[Verse 3]
I lost count along the way
Of the ones I put in graves
But everyone took a little more from a heart I couldn't save
And all the things I did out there
Were the furthest thing from law
So I 'd scream myself awake most nights
Or relive the things I saw
And if I could have just one last prayer
Then the last thing that I'd see
Would be the dark-haired girl with a crooked smile
As she waved goodbye to me
But I never had much luck with prayers
I did even worse with pleas
So I'll be god damned if I die here on my knees
[Chorus]
I'm going home to see my mother
I'm going home, away from here
I ain't gonna die alone and broken
Or forsaken under skies full of despair
