Can you beat the Undead Campaign in Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos with just Ghouls?

- After having a ton of fun with footmen in the human campaign, I decided to take on the undead campaign with ghouls. It was a mistake, and I would not recommend anyone else do this.
Strap in, because this one gets rough.
People talking about Siege of Dalaran, but the absolutely brutal 3-hour long fight for every resource with orcs is what takes the crown for me here. Really puts the "strategy" in the RTS.
It makes sense in retrospect why the orcs would be so difficult for ghouls to deal with, but man, that was the roadblock I didn't see coming. Spiked barricades are sooo brutal for ghouls.
What a cool run, I was wondering about how you'd handle the Dalaran mission but completely forgot about the spiked barricades, that looked like hell
I had the same thought process going in. I was terrified of dalaran but the spikes completely caught me off guard.
In the key of the three moons mission u actually don't need zepplins to cross the river...in the original wc3 the bridge that sylvanas destroys at the start is actually repairable... although it takes a while...but it does give u access to the teleporters
I have heard that! I might revisit this level and try it at some point, been busy recently but I'll get back to making the videos soon!
That was incredible how you managed to get through the Siege of Dalaran. I thought that would have been a run killer, but you got through it.
Thanks! I was concerned it would be a run killer too! Thankfully the archmages were just close enough it was manageable!
@@redwings13400 That 2nd archmage I was worried about, the same with the boxes on the way to Antonidas.
The level 1 archmage that blue unleashed on you in Siege of Dalaran is a lot more interesting than you might think. For some reason, in some campaign missions, the AI can potentially just casually use altars to create new heroes. It's like you would make heroes in skirmish, but there is absolutely no limit to it, they can potentially make as many heroes of the same type as they want. I've just never seen them actually do it even once until this video.
But here's the kicker... you can do it yourself. Fall of Silvermoon was probably my favourite mission as a child, because there are a few perfectly aligned aspects to it:
1. You get access to fully upgraded banshees.
2. Enemy workers can build.
3. Enemy workers can build an altar that has this funky hero creation ability.
So basically, if you keep at least one worker alive when ravaging through Sylvanas' base (they just stand there and do nothing anyway), you can use the banshees that you get access to after completing the side objective to possess that worker, then build up Little Silvermoon of your own and spam however many level 1 Archmages, Mountain Kings and Paladins from the altar as possible, the food supply is your only limit. I highly recommend giving it a shot, it's a sight to behold.
Anyway, cool channel, I'm very happy to see the old Warcraft games before any reforging getting some love with these challenge runs.
Ooh, that’s fascinating! I wonder why they trained the level 1 archmage instead of reviving their level 10 one!
Using human units for this mission sounds like so much fun! Honestly, that’s what siege of dalaran should have been designed around! A big undead base with a smaller human base from a captured peasant. Increase the damage fields output a ton, then force the player to kill the archmage with captured humans that don’t take damage from the zone. That would have been really unique and interesting, especially if the human tech tree were reduced for your buildings
@@redwings13400 That would be cool, but it doesn't exactly fit the whole "steamroll everything" aesthetic of the scourge, I think the fact that Arthas just has his forces stride through the anti-undead fields like it's nothing is a much more fitting power move :D
But also, I don't remember the details, but I think when I used to play this game religiously as a wee lad, I did pretty extensive testing on how much of this worker thievery you can do across the missions, and I think the only other one where this was possible was the one in Frozen Throne where you kill Detheroc, but like... you get them human forces in the next mission anyway, so it kinda defeats the purpose :/
@@Xulgonoth That's fair. That type of mission would have probably worked a lot better in the expansion scourge campaign with Sylvanas flavor wise.
I wonder if its possible to beat the mission without ever sending an undead unit in to the death field? My guess would be probably, assuming you can get fully upgraded banshees there and can steal attack waves.
TIL you can melee magic books to destroy them.
Awesome video! Great excecution of the format/idea!
Thanks! You can destroy regular items this way too! There's almost never a good reason to do this, but its a fun little interaction that I've enjoyed doing in these runs. :)
I was wondering how this'd go considering ghouls are probably the worst of the basic units
The save names for Siege of Dalaran are honestly perfect
This run was insane. I imagine the next run would be a bit easier in theory, but then again, so was the orc mission. Grunts might be the best of the basic units, but the orcs also fight some insane groups of enemies, so who knows
This was very fun to watch. Biggest thing we learned is that a ghoul's best ally is bad enemy AI
Haha yes, bad ai saves the day yet again!
This run was horrendous. I think just by reading my save names you can see the trail of my sanity slipping as I went further and further in to this run. Hopefully the orc run should be easier.
Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@@redwings13400 Yeah, I could see the slow descent into madness from the save names. Guess we'll see how orc goes
@@Undeath9087 Well... I've played through most of the run now, and its not too bad. Grunts are much better than ghouls. There is one exception however...
By demons be driven might be the hardest level yet on this challenge. Fighting chaos orcs with just grunts is so hard! It was all going so nicely until this point, but I'm now going insane again. :p
@@redwings13400 I was wondering how that one would go considering the lovely chaos orcs. I imagine that one's an insane fight. Good luck,
These videos are very entertaining, i look forward to the whole series! ^^
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! :D
You are so good
Thanks! Honestly, I don't consider myself a great rts player, I'm just persistent and enjoy the puzzle of these challenge runs! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Some of the cheese in this is ridiculous. Blue might actually be blind.
The elves certainly don't have much situational awareness, that's for sure. I struggled on this, it's definitely the hardest challenge run I've ever completed.
I cannot put into words how funny the new lore for why things are happening is to me my mom keeps asking why I laugh so hard how do i explain this insanity
Hahaha awwwww that made my day! I’m glad you’re amused by the way my brain works.
Best of luck explaining this to your mom! I certainly don’t know how to fully explain it to my mom, she’s happy that im enjoying making this series and appreciates the effort I put in to it, but I don’t think she understands any of it lol.
@@redwings13400 Yup that is also what my mom ended up saying. "something on your monitor makes you happy, that's nice"
Thank you for recording this video! Its very entertaining.
Glad you enjoyed it! :D
Oblivious Elves. That's hilarious.
Haha yeah I was shocked some of this worked lol
This is literally my favorite video of yours. Impressive run
Thanks you! This was definitely the most painful of the four runs! There were individual levels in the other runs that matched or exceeded the difficulty of any level in this run, but this one was just so consistently maddening!
@@redwings13400 well your misery was very entertaining, thanks again and well done!
One thing I will note: tricking an AI into retreating their attack wave is always a double-edged sword. The attack wave you didn't kill is merely units that the AI doesn't have to spend time rebuilding, and will either lead to the next attack wave coming a lot sooner, or risk being sent out again, alongside a second attack wave as one mega-wave. It looks like that may have happened in Key of the Three Moons.
Yeah, I think you're right, that definitely happened here. Fake bases are definitely one of the strongest tactics I ever discovered for Warcraft 3 challenge runs, but I was still learning the concept in this campaign. In the Frozen Throne scourge campaign I use it a ton, and it's the only reason I was able to beat some of those levels while only commanding ghouls.
good guy arthas the series
I don't even know what to make of my classification of Arthas in this series. I feel like in this series he's mind numbingly oblivious to everything happening around him.
all in service of the ultimate footman he so strived for, of course.
Meanwhile I think I have it hard playing the Undead campaign regularly on hard difficulty 🤣🤣
I did too at first! There are some tough levels in this campaign! The last level can easily destroy you if you aren't prepared for it.
treating your starting units as "allied" is a very clever thing, even if you dont count it as a win
Thank you! Yeah, that's been my go to compromise in missions where I feel like I need them to stay alive. I think it usually works pretty well, keeping the spirit of the challenge alive while making the early game more doable.
I eventually just incorporated that in to my ruleset in frozen throne ghouls only, because it was 100% necessary there.
there is a revamp of this made by sevenblood that has undead footman
Great run, you could build a gold mine and use zigurats against orc building while gouls kills the producing units.
Honestly that might not have been a bad idea, lol! Attacking an orc base with only ghouls is just so much micro! If I lose control for a second my units all kill themselves!
Thankfully the orcs never appear as enemies again in either undead campaign :)
10:33 Bro made most of BFA and the entirety of SL never happen 💀
other than that, WELL DONE on the Orc and Seige o Dalaran mission.
Thank you :)
How ghoulish!
:D
More ghouls are coming soon, as soon as I get healthy enough to record again!
@@redwings13400 Unhealth has attacked you? Bah! How ghoulish!
Feel better, matey.
Sylvanas: I will have reven- ahhh*dies* 0:10
Like to see how dalarans magic field actually works as intended
Dalaran's magic field was super scary with only ghouls. Interestingly though, I think blue was actually the tougher puzzle to solve, thankfully the archmages were just close enough that the field was manageable. If they were slightly further away it would have been impossible.
Wow! Incredible!
Are you a part of @GiantGrantGames community?
Grant is definitely my inspiration for these videos, and I hang out on his discord occasionally. I'm not super involved there, but I do watch his videos, am a member of his discord and hang out there sometimes. :)
@@redwings13400 I think Grant is an inspiration to all of us! Every time I watch his videos, I get the urge to start playing Blizzard RTS again...
I can feel what you mean. 5:55
At one point you think, oh that's awesome and makes it way easier,
but on the other hand you think, it can't be true that the KI is really that dump, that it is this easy.
Haha, yeah! I've done a lot of weird cheeses in these runs but this moment might be the most surprised I've been when something I tried actually worked!
Holy shit
You can beat the final mission with only Ghouls :)
Very nice. I figured it was possible but didn’t want to re-attempt it lol. You’re insane!
@@redwings13400 The trick here was to unsummon the unnecessary buildings (Not altar of darkness cuz you need to upgrade to black citadel.) That way you get enough gold to weather the attack earlier on.
Is there anything else I'm missing? I think I'll probably do these again when I get a gaming laptop/pc using Reforged. Funnily enough Ghouls and Necropolis are more expensive in reign of chaos then Frozen throne but some missions are a bit harder too.
I'll upload them this time.
@@shellshock7043 I look forward to seeing it! If you wanna collaborate on an edited video sharing all of these updated strategies, just let me know, send me the footage and we can collaborate on a script. Then when I’m done editing the video, I’ll send it to you so you can upload it.
If you don’t wanna do this, that’s fine too, I just figured that’s a way we could make the video more interesting than just being pure gameplay with no commentary. This is just a random idea I’m thinking of now, but you’ve done some really impressive stuff and I’d love to work with you on it!
@@redwings13400 Yeah absolutely My current Laptop can't play it though so this might be a several month wait lmfao.
@@shellshock7043 ok! No problem, I’m not in any hurry! This is your project for the most part, so just let me know if you wanna work on a video for all of this! Congrats on beating all of these extra challenges! I’m sure you could find some more if you keep looking, but I can’t think of any right now. :)
I cant even beat the normal mode wiyh normal gameplay lmao
hehe :D
I had a hard time with normal mode the first time I played these campaigns too! Warcraft 3 is a hard game, and campaign missions specifically involve a ton of learning what's going to happen and adjusting to it! Good luck!
@@redwings13400 Any place to learn the mechanics easier mate? Watching your videos makes me want to properly learn it :D
@@agradhanurwedhasakti4865 Honestly, I feel like the campaign on normal is a good place to start. The first time you play an RTS game, you're always going to struggle on it because you're spending time thinking. If you spend, say, 20 seconds reading a tooltip, that's going to be 20 seconds you aren't producing any units, building anything, moving units around, etc. If you aren't sure what to make and spend a minute trying to figure out what to do, that's a minute you spend not doing anything.
That time adds up way more than you realize, and eventually you find yourself with a ton of money and no units, then you die. The best tip I can give you is to just figure out ways to spend your money, and try to avoid getting so distracted with the battle in front of you that you forget to spend your money. Then make minor adjustments from there. You see me struggle a lot in these videos too, and that's because its a hard game where things can spiral out of control very quickly. Learning how to play the campaign in particular is all about adjusting to where you went wrong and figuring out which actions are important, and which ones were a waste of time.
Good luck! I believe in you!
@@redwings13400 it feels like you read my mind lol, I usually spend quite a bunch of times only to read the tips and stuffs. I will try it again after this. Your videos spark my joy for this game again. Please keep making such challenges again in the future and Good luck🖖🏻
shouldve killed the peons instead of the great hall... let them bleed their gold out training them
While I could be wrong, I don't think that tactic works in Warcraft 3. I'm pretty sure the AI gains resources automatically in this game and will continuously rebuild until all of their production and workers are destroyed
@@redwings13400 hmmm... not sure on that myself, sounds like a video challenge to me ;)
wrr
awesome job dude!
Thank you! :D
