All I can hear this whole song is "Skye! Take flight! Here we go, flying tensekein!" "Here goes my impact bomb! Ha!" "Expect an early winter, with lots of snow!" And every other awkwardly delivered but charming voice line
Running it through the Dreamcast VGA adapter and a pc monitor makes it even more awkward, as the game runs slightly too fast and cuts the lines off a split second too early! So you get "Tenseiken sla-" "Here goes my impact bo-" and "With lots of sn-" 😂
Grandia II's music slaps! I've got a request in from last year for another track from the game I thought you might enjoy, so I'm glad to see someone else requested the fight theme. All of the major tracks have a wonderful blend of old-school jrpg keyboard or orchestra mixed with righteously great electric guitar, and it's hard not to jam the hell out. It should also be noted that there's three basic fight themes depending on how you interact with an enemy on a world map. This one is a neutral battle, where you meet the enemy head on. There's also a theme for when the enemy gets the jump on you, and another for when you get the jump on them depending. You then have three different boss themes depending on if it's a major or minor boss, and a final boss theme. Grandia II has a wealth of amazing music.
Aaah, Grandia ♥ While Wild Arms was my first JRPG ever, Grandia II was the first JRPG I finished! And I still love the game so very very much - it's fighting system is still one of the best I've seen in any JRPG! Oooh, I never payed attention to the loop before, it's so good! AND it wasn't random battles despite the game's age, you could see the monsters walking on the map and decide to engage or not (as long as they're not running towards you because they saw you) :D Grandia is truly under the radar though, I feel. At least here in the west. I just played it because my cousin gave me the game back in the days pretty much saying "I love this one, play it" xD
I re-listened to this yesterday since I haven't played the game in years and. Damn. Grandia II did not have to go this hard but they did and I am eternally grateful.
I still remember playing through this game. One of the most solid jrpgs I have played, great story, gameplay and overall experience. I remember renting it and blasting through in a weekend when I was a kid, and it left an impact. This song makes you feel badass in combat, and brings me such warm memories from the golden days.
Oh I was SO excited when I saw this in my subs, this is my favorite game of all time, and Iwadare Noriyuki ALWAYS produces the bangers. That man understands bass and percussion like no one else, so I'm glad you enjoyed that particular part of the song. I hope someone put Purification of Darkness on the request list, too.
I never had a Playstation, jumped straight from Mega Drive to Dreamcast. Grandia II is my Final Fantasy VII, it had that big an impact on me :) (Skies of Arcadia was close, but that came out later in the UK)
The first Grandia was my FFVII. I played that first game multiple times over, and then went to a friend's house a couple of years later. They had a dreamcast and I saw he had Grandia II... and my mind was blown. I didn't even know there WAS a sequel. By that point, I had a PS2 (not a dreamcast), and I was sad I couldn't play this sequel. A few weeks later, I saw the PS2 version in a shop and I immediately spent all of my pocket money on the game. Fantastic decision.
Grandia 2 is one of my favorite games (of this time era) and a lot of my love for it was in its music. The failure with the Dreamcast was that it did not support dvds right when they were becoming popular.
Grandia 2 has the best turn based combat system ever implemented in a game, the fact that the music is generally really good too is definitely a bonus. I've played it through a few times, solely due to the sheer joy of it's combat. The story's not half bad either, and while the english voice acting does suffer from the dub quality of the times, it's actually manageable, which is more than can be said for most dubs from that era. it's got a remaster on Steam and it's definitely worth playing if you're at all comfortable with turn based combat. While the whole soundtrack is pretty baller, my personal recommendations are "Purification of Darkness - Battle with the Parts" and "Cyrum Kingdom - Prosperity and Freedom". I would honestly recommend most of the soundtrack, but I'll stick with those two for now.
It's not exactly a full turn-based combat system. It's pretty much the ATB system (Active Time Battle), which blends turn-based combat with realtime elements. But it is amazing. The Xenoblade games are often called 'action combat systems', but that's also not quite right. They also use an ATB system. Well, FFXII calls it ADB but it's essentially just an ATB system with more realtime elements. Closest to Grandia's combat system would be the Trails games. So Trails in the Sky (trilogy), Trails from Zero and Trails from Azure (duology) and Trails from Cold Steel (4 games). Well, there's a few more as well in the series, it's pretty damn huge in scope. They're not exactly the same as Grandia, but there is an interruption mechanic where you cancel some attacks that enemies throw at you (mostly when they're casting arts, but... it also works against you).
It's been 17-18 years since I played this game. The series is mostly a forgotten gem at this point. Great music and one of the best battle systems in all of rpgs.
Yeah, your comment section is great. Fun to read the experience of long time fans. BTW, Grandia II was great. I think I had it for PS2. Didn't know it was originally on dreamcast. Man, the early 2000s were great for JRPGs.
Grandia! That game I always liked. It fell on hard times in the later titles. The battle systems in Grandia is always been fun. Also helps they are stand alone titles to so you could hop in wherever. I remembered getting into Grandia 2 specifically cause it had decent voice acting (not common for RPGs at the time). Combat is neat in that your characters would walk around independently between turns and you would use skills and attacks based on enemy positioning and grouping. It has been a long time since ive played one though. This is the type of music that blends in my brain with other JRPGs like Wild Arms and stuff.
The battle system is SO good! How many other RPGs can you just use a cancel attack and say "Actually no, you don't get to do that attack now." Genius! Plus the voice acting cast is stacked!Cam Clarke (Liquid Snake, Leonardo from TMNT '87), Jennifer Hale (Femshep, Bayonetta) and Jodi Benson playing a role so completely different in personality from Ariel the little mermaid it's crazy!
I've always held that Grandia 1 and especially 2 had the best combat system in a JRPG ever. The ability to cancel enemy moves if you manage to connect a specific attack before the enemy completes theirs, combined with the fact that the characters had to take time move to the enemy to attack them made for some very tense moments during combat. Considering that the combat system was essentially turn based it was an amazingly dynamic experience.
@@SpaceBrotha The Trails games actually have those mechanics as well. In the Trails in the Sky games, interrupting your enemy's spell casting is pretty essential on higher difficulties if you want to win. In Trails from Zero the impede mechanic is sadly rather gimped and I think most bosses are actually immune to it. I forgot what it's like in Cold Steel, I think it was pretty useful but I can't remember. That being said, the Grandia games do a beter job overal with the interception mechanic since the fights are pretty much built around it. Especially on Grandia 2's hard difficulty from the remaster it's essential. I spent over an hour on the final boss and most of it was a tightrope walk between dishing out more damage and making sure it gets as few attacks in as possible because it could put the entire party in jeopardy.
I just found this channel a few days ago because I was looking for Silent Hill music. I immediately remembered Morfar, the late UA-camr, and I also was reminded of Mang0, the SSBM player, from this gentleman's appearance.
I first played this game when I was 8-9 years old or so!Now ,my first language is german and I had only learned some bits of english at the time ...and the game only released entirely in English over here, for some reason. It did end up sticking in my mind a lot for that exact reason though (I did finish the game, but I vaguely remember initially not knowing you could recover health at save points iirc, which made the game early on infinitely harder for me)
Im a bit late, but i loved all the battle themes in this game. The game really had a "shits going down" kinda vibe and always had me moving ne hands to the songs haha
I remember getting this game as a young teen while shopping with my mom and aunt. I was short a few bucks and my aunt covered what I was missing. I really enjoyed playing it, even though it was the inferior PS2 version. It has an amazing story.
Here's a silly admission- I never grew up with Grandia, so when I first heard Fight!!, it always sounded like the NBA on NBC theme they used back in the 90s (watch?v=V_h7Lm7C9Nk). Always thought the intros for both songs were similar in tone and energy.
Grandia 1, 2, and 3 all have great soundtracks(except the opening of 3, it certainly....exists). Great Assize is one of my favorites from Grandia 3, and you've already gone through two of my favorites from the first two games =)
Grandia 1 & 2's soundtracks are Great You should check out "Village of Luc" , "Garlyle Forces Battle" , "Battle 1, 2, & 3" , "Twin Tower" (mostly because of it's interesting used of Synth) from Grandia 1 "Have Faith in Yourself" , "Purification Of Darkness" & "Nightmare Village Milm" from Grandia 2
Grandia 2 is from 2001. And this song is from generic combat. You hear it during combat in dungeons, while going through forests, tracing mountains, going through reefs, ancient military bases, devilish moon and inside body of evil god. So yeah, this song has to fit so many locales. And yes, Grandia 2 is VERY traditional JRPG. Boss themes are different. So yeah, you're very accurate.
!!! The best song! The synth parts are so great, I adore how they weave into the guitar and they take turns leading the music. It's so cool! unrelated, Millenia was a total gay awakening XD
It only has 2 premier JRPG's. This one and Skies of Arcadia. Both of them are amazing though. I wish they remastered SoA. Only feature they'd need to add is speeding up battles (which I think is probably a given with how slow the ship battles were, even if epic).
This game is pretty great. Story and characters overal are nice too. And the battle system is amazing. And yes, it's definitely early 2000's. Quite honestly, it's such a shame that kickass JRPG battle themes like this are kinda rare these days. And good stories in them are far more rare this day and age.
For me it's this one. People always tend to gravitate to the final boss and superboss themes as the ones they like best... but I'm often a huge fan of the regular battle and boss battle themes.
Idk if you’ll see this Jesse but could you look at Yo Kai Watch 3 Boss Battle Sound Track or the enemy battle. The games and franchise is severely underrated the story and games are good, this a kids game but you reacted to the Kirby final boss theme so it’s balance. Please react to it and give hope to this almost dying franchise lol
And then there's Grandia 2. Just as much a must play as the first game but.. Jeez louise the themes between the two could hardly be more different if they tried, this game is, start to (almost) finish, a *lot* darker than 1. And I love it not one iota less than 1 for it.
