Really difficult song to sing live, Lauren did well tho. I personally prefer when the vocals crack a bit live as opposed to sounding fake and autotuned. It lends a rawer feeling to the performance that's more genuine. This girl reeks of talent nonetheless.

@@nuberiffic If they didn't use midi samples, they would need a team of people playing with them. Watch their cover of "Cry me a river" and pay attention to Ian and Martin's hands. They're always doing *something*. If that's what you call "pressing a few buttons", then I agree with you, but we have a vastly different understanding of what "a few" is.
You gotta remember this song was was written for Rihanna not Lauren. This is a cover, it's not going to be the same. I really like this rendition and I really like what they've done with it, be a little more open minded. They're a band it's not just about the vocal performance and how good Lauren is, it's about the whole things and it works together as a unit.
Rihanna, who uses auto tune throughout the entire song unlike Lauren who can actually sing and does it naturally, uneducated twerp.
so its their job as musicians to adjust the piece so that it works for them
there are plenty of people that think that this works for them tho, thats the point, its not all about vocal performance. Its about the band as a whole.

If one element is bad, it effects the whole performance
People commenting that she can't sing need to realise that Chvrches aren't a manufactured pop band like most of the acts on Radio 1. A lot of people prefer the rock/alternative/synth combination of sounds that Chvrches do so well.
I don't think those things have anything to do with her singing ability.

Hope M Lauren Mayberry can sing, better than most can. Sure, Rihanna's singing is better, sure, but this is just a cover by an indie synth band.
Lauren is a transcendent talent. Period. And apparently she is able to perform any genre of music nearly flawlessly.

I can't help but notice that the people that judge her here so badly probably came here to hear a totally manufactured prerecorded like song and nothing else. In other words something not very human. She's singing a popular song that she enjoys and she is sharing it with the world. She probably finds great meaning to these lyrics. A lot of people are saying that this song doesn't fit them, but don't realize that they aren't so interested in making themselves look perfect as they are to sort of make like an ode to this piece of art. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all. I can totally see how she tries her best to tweak the song to fit into her singing range while maintaining the same sort of flow of the original artist. Like singing in the shower kind of, so I find it really respectful of her actually. If she wanted she could change so many things about the song to accommodate her so much more. I'm sure she has some respect for the way people know and love her style of music and I'm sure she doesn't mean to shake up people's expectancies so to displease them. That just isn't logical. What's logical is that she is honoring the original artist for how SHE AND YOU first experienced and came to know this song. Realize that she also has respect for the style of music of this artist and the way in which she heard it. If you're harshly criticizing her and you mean it have some empathy please. For the world and for yourself. You don't even need much sometimes to behave like an awesome person. Sometimes all we're missing to be able to meet someone half ways is just a little bit more of it so that it's enough. They say that the art of knowing is knowing what to ignore and not knowing that you're ignoring something big you shouldn't be is totally bad. She must be aware that people can be very quick to forget and disregard the value of anything that is consumable and all around distributed and accessible to people at any time like music is. It's kind of a sick and sad thing to understand and have to accept but her and many artists bravely do and they still manage to put on a great show for us. Seeing an artist such as her truly enjoy herself in front of us is almost breathtaking. There is so much beauty within these moments.. how she allows herself to carry on (in front of everyone) this loving brave and beautifully infinite force that is inside her to accompany/aid her performance. It exists among so much contrast and so much madness it's inspiring. I wish more people could perceive the humanity and the amounts of faith these people truly have despite what it "looks like" Especially their nobility which appears to hide the most in plain view; the public eye. And even more to them as nothing really is what it seems. Long story short, living a song (like she does here in this video) is definitely not anything like pressing the play button on a screen and more people should remember that. Stick it in a file in their brains to never forget. That should be possible.. because forgetting that a lovely lady like her is also human like us and not a singing robot is possible too apparently.
I really like their covers better than the original versions. They should produce some big pop artist but never stop making their own stuff. I love them.
Highly encourage people to listen to some of their music as well as their cover of 'Do I Wanna Know by AM before they comment saying how bad they are lol

This is a baby cover/child cover... vocal type doesnt match the song she sounds like a kid.. and its not great singing 2:16 & 3:14 sounds like shes straining and many other parts too, its not smooth.. but shes very beautiful

Lauren's vocals sound by the far the best on the last chorus, when she's singing more within her style. For me the biggest issue is her trying to copy someone else's style on a cover rather than putting her own style on it

This wasn't perfect. BUT IT SOUNDS GOOD. The imperfections in her vocals make it beautiful actually bc it sounds raw and not auto-tuned!

People need to stop comparing covers of songs to their original versions. A cover is your own fucking interpretation of a song. You *do not* have to try to imitate the style of the original singer. It's far more difficult to create a good cover that is "your own" than to try to replicate the original. Chvrches is amazing at doing that.

It started off a bit shaky, sensed some nervous energy! I take it that's why the voice became a shout rather than using it as an instrument (trying to push the vocals out). Towards the end it picked up and sounded pretty good and found the right path. I do feel for Lauren here.

I love that they covered this song! Better than the overplayed original. The vocals aren't perfect, but she pushed through the imperfections and made it work.
I think it's a good cover. Her voice is a breath of fresh air. It's not meant to be perfect, it's 100% live.
