- The Great Moghuls (1990) is a Channel Four Television documentary series covering the dramatic story of the rise of the Moghul Empire (1526-1857) of India. Over six generations, from father to son, the Great Moghuls captured, consolidated and profoundly influenced control of the vast sub-continent of India. The six-part series was written and presented by Bamber Gascoigne based upon his 1971 book of the same name. It was produced and directed by Douglas Rae and filmed in India.
One of the best documentaries I have ever seen. Bamber Gascoigne truly is a master of history.
These were made by Indian as Indians are mastered in everything... Mughal destroy many magnificent temple, University... & Looted Indian treasure
Best Documentar ever!!!!! RESPECT!!!!
I haven't seen this before. Many thanks for making it available here.
One of my favorite documentaries of all time !
Wow in just 200 years Moghuls have given India so many beautiful architectural classics
thanks for this. i'll look it up
mughal period in india was certainly one of the best period from progress ,archetectural ,prosperity and intellectual point of view.they have constructed magnificent buildings, created stron traditions and healthy competition among their subjects especially akbar s period.
gupta period is known as the golden period of indian history.the great epithet is added for the name of AKBAR and ASHOK only. mughal period is also very well known for magnificent building construction , improved warfares tactics, improved gdp and establishment of new system of land reforms by todarmal. aurangjeb was the richest emperor and have the largest military in the world during his time.no doubt due to his policy of religious persecution most of the empire resources has drained and empire lastly collapsed after his demise and financial constraints.shahjahan s period is also known as golden mughal period.so we cant demean the achievements of mughals in development of indiaas a great empire on the religious lines.

I bought the German translation of Mr Gascoigne`s book years ago and have kept it since. I just looked at it today, looked him up in Wikipedia and then found this documentary. Great!

Excellent documentary!!
Mauryan empire Gupra empire , Cholas,Cheras, and the Pandyas, Mughals , Delhi Sultanate kings , Marathas etc make Indian history the richest and most interesting in the world.
Mughals and the Delhi sultans weren’t Indian.
If mughals and delhi sultanate kings were considered as Indians then britishers, portugese, french, dutch also should be considered as Indian.Basically Mughals n Delhi Sultanates were all invaders.Nothing else.No need to glorify them.Previously due to vote bank politics they were glorified in school history books and movies but certainly they should be referred in the history books basically as foreigners who invaded and ruled Northern part of India who followed Islam as their religion.Among them probably Akbar was little secular.Nothing more than that.If they had build more temples than mosques during their rule, you can give them secular tag which they were not.Is there any reference to Mughals visiting a temple during their rule.I dont think so there was any reference. So why unecessarily we have to glorify mughals.Stop false propaganda.Mind it,i am not at all a BJP bhakt or supporter.
If Mughals and Delhi sultanate rulers aren't Indian then not a single US presidents are Americans as they were and are all Europeans.. so?
And sikhs
@@iragateestataatateesta971 also Indians came from Africa. They are also non native people of India.

Mindbogglingly documentary ,Very less Drama and pure History.
Such a rich history! I visited some of these locations along with Humayun's tomb and was inspired to even make some short videos to celebrate these wonderful sights. :)

You are absolutely right!!!
It can be said beside many bad things happened during the Turkic Moghul Empire in India very much good things happened. See the great buildings designed, waterways laid, ruling system, art, music, food and many more valuable contributions to India. A very nice blend of Islamic Turkic culture and Indian Hindu culture creating a multicultural beautifull nation. That is why I love to visit Insia always, such a blend of cultures, food, arts and people.

sikhs are interesting because they are a copy-cat of Islam, and their culture developed under the influence of central Islamic Punjab.
Their original khalsa(flag) had Indian Muslim symbols like the crescent.
Their gurdwaras(holy places) resemble a mosque much more than a Hindu temple, especially the inside
their saint soldiers are called sipahis
Their women wear the shalwar kameez
Their religion asserts oneness of God
beautifully made..as are most bbc history documentaries
Amazing Documentary Thank You for uploading Crescent Muhammad ^_^
I love that, a desert as a force to be reckoned with.
Very well documentery ever best about mogul empire
A very interesting empire.
This was a wonderful video. I love learning about various empires. Weirdly enough, I have DNA from the area of Afghanistan, Central Asia/Mongolia. I'm mostly Celt (Scots, Irish, Insular and continental Celt), so this came as a surprise-- an interesting surprise. But then, some researchers think the Celts originated in Central Asiam not Central Europe. It's nice to learn about the areas where my DNA originated. I find it all quite fascinating. And I love Indian music so it's a win-win.
Gven that the Moghuls were Muslim, I imagine that Hindu images came as quite a shock. I used to go to a local Hindu Temple at times and thought it very beautiful, but then I used to be Catholic and the churches I attended had lots of statues. I can't remember the name of the site, but it's in the area known as the Deccan Traps. The temples are carved out of basalt, carved from the top down. You have to respect a culture that could accomplish such things.
I love the story of Shah Jehan and his love for his Mumtaz. I remember first hearing the story when I was young and it captured my heart. May their love never be forgotten.
Anyhow, thank you for posting!
I'm a Muslim Jat, born in the Punjabi capital of Lahore, and a descendant of the Scythians of the Pontic-Caspian Steppe. Those Central Asian nomads certainly got around.
If I may ask, are you a Muslim? I haven't seen many Celts use a Niqabi as a profile picture.
@@ok00001 Actuay, I'm one of a small number of non-Muslim niqabis. I'm an Eastern Orthodox nun in Great Schema and while I'm pretty much a recluse at home, I wear a niqab when going outside so that I can maintain purdah as much as possible.
And lest I forget, Ramadan Kareem!

Thus, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural elements of Central Eurasian Turks became an important part of Near Eastern and Indian Islamic culture, with Turks dominating the military and political institutions of those two regions for centuries following their initial intervention into the Near East in 1040.
Ethnic Turks are a minority in Turkey. Just sayin'...
@@CaptainHarlock-kv4zt That's why they're "Turkish" and not "Turkic". Mixing with Europeans for 1,000 years has changed them.

They never fully conquered India, the south- the Deccan wasn’t conquered and it was a sort of truce between the Sikhs of Rajasthan. Very complex history , but changed India forever
Timurid Dynasty - Great Mughals was Turks from Central Asia (nowadays Kazakhs, Ozbeks, Kyrgyzs, Turkmens).
They were Turko Mongols
More like Mongols that were Turkified.

I will end with a quote:
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma(religion) - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Siddhi Johar's appointment was one of the concessions made when Shahu was installed on the Maratha throne by Bahadur Shah. The latter had hoped to control the throne but fortunately, things turned otherwise.
Whether due to fear or financial reasons, Jauhar-now in his seventies-remained loyal to the Marathas, now the supreme Western power- and led the Maratha navies until 1711 when Vishwanath Bhatt was appointed Admiral; Angre came into power later. Later details about Johar are sketchy at best.
They are not turks and mongols they mixed Turkic-Mongol
Babur’s lineage from his father was Mongol which makes him Mongol his mother was Turkic but in Islam we don’t count the mother side
And were heavily influenced by persia , and later becoming more indians than they were Turkish, so thet means they were indien-persianised Turkic mongol

On the 13th day (trayodashi) of the first fortnight of the month of 'Jyeshtha' the coronation ceremony was held to enthrone Punyashlok Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as the King of Hindavi Swaraj. The grand function took place atop 5,000-ft high Raigad fort in Maharashtra. He became thereafter a full-fledged Chhatrapati - a Hindu emperor in his own right. The occasion holds up for the Hindu people inspiring lessons for their future. This crowning ceremony was a blow to the invincibility of Muslims.

Mongols only destroyed...?
Look at India now attracting tourists from all over with the Taj Mahal which mongol disendents have built. Instead of saying it was the worst time period of India u should be thankful.
There would have been huge awesome Indian historical structures there. Some that were destroyed and the very same spot the Mughal structures built. A lot of these structures were built at the cost of Indian lives. To build Taj Mahal artificial famine was created. Many died. People would have still come to India, even without the Mughals, its like saying had the British not been here we wouldn't have any rail roads. We the British are not here and we sent a satellite to Mars...no help from British thank you very much!. Why do we have so little faith in our own culture and our rich history that thrived before the Mughals and British?
The Reason of India's Fall ...Was the tactical and Military Superiority of Turks .... They were more Evolved in Warefare Than Contemporary Indian Empires...
Even Delhi Sultanate was ... Outmatched by Babur and his army with Superior Weapons ....Like Canons... Mascots... Babur used Fire-arms First time on Indian soil ...In the battle of Panipath with Ibrahim Lodhi ..... Akbar excelled much more than his Grandfather...He was more Experimental...In Warefare
Many Maratha generals were Muslim. The Chief Admiral of Shahu's navy was the King Siddhi Johar- who was an Ethiopian Muslim- he orchestrated the naval blockade of Goa during the Maratha- Portuguese war (which the Maratha Confederacy won).
Of course, that kind of stuff will never be made into a documentary by the West...

@shanmirza007 It is not exactly precise to call the Mughuls as Turks because culturally, they were never Turkish. The Mongols who became Mughuls adopted Persian culture form the very beginning. It's more precise (though not completley) to call Turks as belonging to Mongol tribes.
I think you really need to read the old NCERT books written by some eminent Indian historians like Romila Thapar,RS Sharma,Satish Chandra,Bipan Chandra,Arjun Dev etc. These books are pretty good but were withdrawn during the Murli Manohar's stint as HRD minister but were not reinstated after that.

To summarise: Scientific knowledge is hard 2digest removes the reassuring crutches of opinion, ideology, dogma &shows something that is demonstrably true. Products of human emotion like arts, poetry, literature, politics are second hand accounts of the authors that are made third hand when we digest it and is easier. As Richard Dawkins says "We are all atheists with respect to ALL the gods societies have ever believed in, some of just us go one god further". Thus, 4m many gods to 1 god to 0 god.
