@@madelines_madness Haha I don't mind the wording. Yes, 🎸 is actually guitar. I am that type of person who scroll down the list when searching for emoji (instead of typing the name in search box), so I wasn't aware that it is guitar 🤣.
I play violin and bass guitar both and I can say, that both this instruments are very cool and have their own advantages. BUT I think that violin is harder to start learning, because it's not too easy to make cool sound from it, and play correct notes. And bass is harder to learn when you already learn basics, but you want to play some harder things, and use different techniques
Oh definitely. I play both as well. I took 6 years of private violin lessons and have been teaching myself the bass with occasional college lessons for 2 years. The bass was very natural for me to pick up whereas the violin I still struggle in many areas.
My first instrument was the piano, which really doesn't help me with either. I also think the bass is was more fun. The violin is a beautiful instrument made for classical music, but you can have so much fun with rock, jazz, metal, funk, and really any genre of the bass
@@ssimms8995 seems like somebody'd not heard of David Garret, Lindsey Stirling, and Ulytau
why play violin *and* bass, and not just play double bass :p
Jokes aside Davie actually took to this extremely quickly he knew how to correct on mistakes, asked a genuine question that helped and played bloody well for a person with I believe no prior knowledge
Ikr
I mean, he is a proficient musician after all and knows how to play fretless bass as well. So the concept of not having frets is something he is accustomed to. Also fingering is important in bass playing, so the transition to violin is not that hard.
Of course playing a new instrument comes with all its own difficulties, but being a good player on a different instrument helps a lot, especially when they come from a similar family. And I would group bass and violin in a similar family, both string instruments, both (usually) 4 strings, left hand does the fingering. Closer than for example marimbaphone and trumpet.
@@Dethleffff The violin and the bass both have the same strings, just in reverse order and obviously several octaves apart from each other!
@@Dethleffff you ever played violin?? The only thing bass like that i would compare it to is double bass or cello, double bass for the fretless and cello for the use of a bow. Other than that bass guitar and violin have bugger all similarities besides being fretless.
@@keith221191 I am a guitar player and fooled around with a violin only once. The major difficulty was the bow and the way one holds the violin, not the left hand fingering. At least for complete beginner purpose the knowledge about where notes are on the guitar and where they are on the violin translates good enough, since the relative spacing is the same on both instruments. If you want to play a D on the A string, it is roughly one quarter down on the string and you probably won't use your index finger to shift that far up. Also you can just slide into the correct pitch if you are off. And having musical experience really helps to figure out a) if you are off and b) where you have to slide. Of course I am only talking about absolute beginner stuff, but this is what this video is all about.
I am not saying playing violin is easy, when you know how to play bass. I say, learning to play violin is easier, when you know how to play another stringed instrument that shares the overall shape.
Brett and Eddy are actually pretty good teachers, Davie improved really quickly as well
Do you really need to comment 4 times?

@@NunoLeitaonunogrl Bassonini
Musician so he understand strings, fingering and has practiced hearing so he corrects the position of his fingers as he goes. Still sounds terrible but better than a beginner that never played any instrument, especially string instrument
Well, he's a very good player and knows tons about music in general, also plays a distant relative instrument (string based), so many concepts are totally familiar to him. Tuning for example, they only had to tell him which it is, w/o explaining what a tuning means as you would to a complete beginner. Dave has to adapt from a perfect-fourths to a perfect-fifths tuning, but it's a minor adjustment overall (for sure other adjustements are more challenging).
Also, Dave has extremely good finger coordination in the left hand (and right one of course but brobably that plays a different role in a violin), vastly superior to that of a beginner. The hand positioning is different, but finger control translates almost perfectly.
Dave plays fretless bass, too, so the lack of frets isn't disturbing him at all, and he's totally familiar with the concept of positioning to get different semi-tones.
I think he struggle mostly with the bow. Probably you'd find him good at plucking, as his right hand coordination translates almost perfectly at that.
Even piano players wouldn't be total beginners, but while they may understand the idea of tuning, they don't have a direct practical knowledge of the relationship between strings, as a guitar/bass player does. They have good hand coordination but not in the same movements. Also the note distribution is very different. I imagine they'd struggle more, but they'd still be far ahead compared to total beginners.
And last but not least, some people are just talented af. Dave is one of them for sure.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, with defunding music education, there is a diminishing popularity of playing instruments, with people opting for laptops. ".....it's like bass, it's this one"
*plays D*
Well chaps, I'd say he's got it
Violin's tuning is G D A E while bass tuning is E A D G. So could we say bass is a reverted violin ? Or is it violin being a reverted bass ?
Elegant, is it not? Tuning in 4ths vs 5ths. Yes, I play both instruments.
Depends on whose channel you’re watching 😆
@@SandraTheatre absolutely true lol
You mean inverted, not reverted
4:38 the way davie asked twoset was like an innocent shy kid trying to ask help from an actual teacher🥺🥺 he looked like a soft giant babyy😆
He's being held at gunpoint what do you expect
Omg yess🥺✨ someone pointed it out at last
Idk but someth irks me about calling grown as men "baby🥺"
@@niki1990 idk, i said he resembled one but isn't one 😗
This was great. You guys are funny and you made Davie laugh. Thanks for the fun video.
Just realised that bass and violin are literally oppositely tuned strings
Bass: EADG
Violin: GDAE
You can tell Davie is under terrible duress. Happy, safe Davie never smiles. That smile is a cry for help. Damn these cruel violin-toting monsters.
2 new bassist, a new violinist. A wonderful ending indeed
But violin-chan?? What about violin-chan??
@@maychas9970 Finally played!
Standing next to Davie must feel like standing next to the Colossal Titan. I'm shorter than Brett, if Davie extended one arm, I could walk below it without hitting it with my head 🤣
So jealous of Davie's fingers as a pianist, This collab is so wholesome and hilarious
Yes! I'm a pianist too I'm so jealous sbjshwh
This just goes to show how some musical knowledge (you might call it musical intuition) can translate between instruments. Once Davie knew what the open strings were, he could guesstimate the other notes by shortening the strings until it matched the pitch he was audiating, even if he didn't know the actual fingerings.
I think that comes quite natural to most string players. After watching it I was thinking to myself that I actually was in simillar position few years back (playing mostly bass and guitar) and got hands on the violin. It was kind of intuitive where the sounds are... more for my fingers than for my brain :D
It's a matter of proportion, probably. Theoretically, half the length is one octave up, and the proportion should be the same for all stringed instruments (Physics!) so you can roughly estimate
7:33 twoset and davie drinking bubble tea awkwardly infront of the camera, this... this is peak content right here
Wow Davie bow control was actually better than expected!
Forget the Avengers, THIS is the greatest crossover in history!
Jokes aside, its very nice to see everyone enjoying learning/teaching their instruments. Great job guys!
I love when Davie trying to get the note that he want by himself and impress them
Davie has the potential to develop a monster fourth finger. Davie's got long, slender, strong, super smart fingers. Phalangeal isolation exercises, (hammer hovers), would bring him along quickly to cement the fingers in 1st position. The man must have some thick fingertip pads as well, take advantage of that by cutting some new violin string grooves in those callouses.
I barely see Davie smile. And for the records, only his girlfriend and TwoSet Violin are the only who made him smile.
The guy behind the camera pointing the gun also agrees
