  • In this video, Logee's horticulturist and third generation owner, Byron Martin, demonstrates how he puts the Hardy Banana (Musa basjoo) plant to bed for the winter. Also known as the Japanese Banana or Japanese Fibre Banana, the Basjoo Banana is considered the be the most cold hardy banana in the world. This extremely vigorous banana plant grows many feet in a season, and in time, forms large clumps that can reach up to 13' in height. It makes a fine container specimen, and if grown inside, it will tolerate varying conditions of temperature and light with ease. Although it does produce bananas, they are inedible. Simple to grow, give it plenty of water, fertilizer and sunlight. With this Hardy Banana you’ll get a defining tropical look. And with proper mulching, it can withstand temperatures below zero.

I like to mulch the old frosted banana leaves themselves and recycle all those nutrients back into the plant.

Did you say how old this stand is? My husband really wants to grow this plant, and I’m wondering how much room we should give it. And man would he love that machete work 😆🙃

Truly appreciate it when you consider the plant is really beautiful. We take it for granted here. And noone would think the plant could be part of a garden landscape. We plant them for the fruits. In our language this is Pokok Pisang. Thanks 🇲🇾

Very helpful, I grew up in Connecticut. I've been living in Florida for over 40 years now and believe it or not but I really miss the change of the seasons. AUTUMN 🍂 LEAVES CHANGING COLORS

Machete work is very satisfying isn't it? I find it to be good stress relief or an outlet for frustration and/or anger. I always feel calmer, more at ease with the world, after swinging a machete for a couple hours.
